Drimiopsis maculata is a charming South African bulb succulent that is quite unlike most succulents you will come across. Its glossy, deep green leaves are decorated with darker green or purple-tinged spots, giving it an exotic, tropical look. In spring and early summer it sends up slender spikes of tiny white flowers. As a geophyte, it grows from a bulb and will naturally go dormant in winter, losing its leaves before bouncing back with vigour in spring. This makes it a fascinating and rewarding plant to grow.
| 📐 Current Size | |
| ☀️ Sun | Bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh, direct afternoon sun which can scorch the leaves. |
| ⚠️ Toxicity | Mildly toxic. Can cause stomach upset if ingested by humans or pets. Keep out of reach of curious animals and children. |
| 💧 Watering | Water regularly during the growing season in spring and summer. Reduce watering significantly in autumn and cut back to almost none in winter while the plant is dormant. |
| 🌿 Fertilising | Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. |
| 📏 Mature Size | 20 to 30cm tall. Spreads over time by producing offsets and multiplying bulbs. |
| 🌿 Difficulty | Easy to moderate. The winter dormancy can catch some growers off guard, but do not panic as it is perfectly normal. |
| 🎨 Colours | Deep green leaves with dark spots. Small white flower spikes in spring and summer. |
| 🛡️ Disease Resistant | Generally good. |
| 🏜️ Drought Tolerant | Moderate. Not as drought tolerant as typical succulents. |
| 🔥 Heat Tolerant | Moderate. |
| 🪨 Poor Soil | Prefers well-draining soil with some richness. A loamy, free-draining mix works well. |
| 📝 Additional Notes | An excellent indoor plant or shaded patio plant. The bulbs multiply over time, giving you more plants to share. The leaves dying back in winter is perfectly normal dormant behaviour. |
