Dracaena reflexa 'Red' – Red-Edged Dracaena with Architectural Form

Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia 'Red', often still listed under its synonym Dracaena marginata, is a dramatic cultivar grown for its upright form and bold foliage. It develops slender, woody stems that rise bare and twisting with age, topped by crowns of narrow leaves edged in deep red. Over time the plant matures into a sculptural, tree-like shape that fits perfectly into modern interiors, offering both height and color contrast without overwhelming a space.

What Sets Dracaena 'Red' Apart

  • Leaf Color: Dark green blades with narrow, rich red margins – darker and less pink than the related cultivar 'Colorama'.
  • Growth Style: Upright stems that slowly develop into snaking trunks with tufts of foliage at the tips.
  • Indoor Presence: Adds vertical lines and a splash of color, ideal for minimalist or tropical styling.
  • Longevity: A slow but steady grower that adapts well to long-term container culture.

Origin and Related Forms

The species Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia is native to Madagascar and nearby islands, where it grows as a small tree. Cultivars like 'Red', 'Bicolor', and 'Colorama' were developed in horticulture for their leaf coloration. Among them, 'Red' is distinguished by its darker edging, giving it a more subtle, elegant look compared to the brighter pink tones of 'Colorama'.

Cultivation Guide

  • Light: Best in bright, indirect light; some direct sun enhances red edges, while low light dulls coloration.
  • Watering: Water moderately, letting the top few centimeters of soil dry out between waterings.
  • Soil: A well-draining potting mix with added grit or perlite works best.
  • Temperature: Ideal range is 18 – 27 °C; protect from cold drafts.
  • Humidity: Tolerates normal indoor air but grows best with occasional misting.
  • Feeding: Fertilize monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid feed.

Considerations in Care

  • Leaf Browning: Caused by inconsistent watering or overly dry air.
  • Trunk Form: Lower leaves naturally shed, creating the characteristic bare stem over time.
  • Pest Watch: Can attract scale or spider mites if neglected.
  • Toxicity: Contains saponins; toxic to pets if ingested.

Why Grow Dracaena 'Red'

Collectors value Dracaena reflexa 'Red' for its combination of resilience and ornamental appeal. Unlike spotted types such as Dracaena surculosa, this cultivar offers sleek lines and color contrast in a more architectural form. Its versatility, from homes and offices to conservatories, makes it one of the most enduring Dracaena selections worldwide.

Etymology

The genus name Dracaena comes from the Ancient Greek δράκαινα (drakaina), meaning “female dragon,” referring to the red resin (“dragon’s blood”) produced by some species in the group.

Add Dracaena 'Red' to Your Collection

If you’re looking for a houseplant that combines dramatic color, long-term resilience, and a sculptural growth form, Dracaena reflexa 'Red' is an excellent choice. Secure yours today and enjoy a plant that matures into a living design feature in any interior.

Well intentioned but ignorant
It's clear that this author is well intentioned. He betrays his own ignorance in trying to justify why his book only addreses certain native nations, however. The author indicates that the book did not address the native peoples of the Caribbean because they are extinct. To state that the Taino and Carib are extinct is at best extremely ignorant and at worst racist. The Taino and Carib are very much alive. To begin with, there is a reservation of Carib Indians on the island of Dominica. These native people have retained their language and culture. Further, there is a Taino Revival movement happening throughout the major Antilles especially in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Cuba. It has been scientifically proven via DNA analysis that these people are of partial and in some cases total native descent. The Taino language is being heard and taught again in the Caribbean and Taino culture has always been an integral part of the the customs and culture of the major Antilles. It is very unfortunate to know that even this author is ultimately just another white guy bent on ignoring " incovenient truths ".

By far, the best book of many I have read on this subject. Must read for anyone interested in this subject.
Format: Paperback
Best book I have yet read on the subject, and I have read many in research for the writing of my second novel. It relentlessly examines specific cases of lynching over time, but it is not a mere narrative of specific lynchings. It is an excellent analysis of the social, historical and cultural forces behind this horrendous practice. The book's discussion of the movie, Birth of a Nation, would by itself make this a valuable book, but the book's central theme is even more important. Its central theme, the public's desire for spectacle as fuel for lynchings, particularly after the abolition of legal public executions, is even more revealing. Also a good look at the social and cultural forces that over time led to the gradual demise of lynching as a phenomenon. A page turner for history readers. Warning -- man's inhumanity to man will make you simultaneously angry and sad.
