Encyclia tampensis – Florida Butterfly Orchid
Delicate, fragrant, and effortlessly elegant, Encyclia tampensis—commonly known as the Florida Butterfly Orchid—is a true native treasure. Found naturally throughout South Florida and the Caribbean, this epiphytic orchid thrives mounted on wood or nestled in a well-draining orchid mix, making it a versatile and rewarding addition to any collection.
In bloom, Encyclia tampensis produces tall, airy spikes adorned with clusters of star-shaped flowers in soft shades of green, bronze, and cream, highlighted by a striking white lip often marked with purple veining. The blossoms resemble tiny butterflies in flight and release a light, sweet fragrance that adds to their charm.
Unlike many orchids, this species is notably hardy and adaptable once established. It appreciates bright, filtered light, good air circulation, and regular watering with a slight dry-down between cycles. Ideal for Florida growers and warm climates, it also performs beautifully in greenhouses or bright indoor spaces.
Whether mounted for a naturalistic display or grown in a basket, Encyclia tampensis offers:
-
Fragrant, butterfly-like blooms
-
Excellent heat tolerance
-
Native Florida provenance
-
Easy-care nature for beginners and collectors alike
A must-have for orchid enthusiasts, native plant lovers, and anyone seeking a graceful, low-maintenance showpiece with authentic Florida character.
