Introducing the Cobweb Hens and Chicks, known as Sempervivum arachnoideum, which is a vibrant mat-forming succulent plant, that belongs to the Sempervivum genus. The Sepervivum arachnoideum has several other common names such as Cobweb Houseleek, Cobweb sedum, or Spiderweb Hens and Chicks because of its fine, web-like hairs that cover its leaves.

The webs on Sempervivum arachnoideum, are actually a natural characteristic of the plant. These webs, made up of silvery-white hairs, serve a few purposes. They help protect the plant from excessive sunlight by providing some shade. The webs can help trap moisture around the leaves, acting as a natural insulation and reducing water loss. Additionally, the webs add a unique and visually appealing feature to the plant, making it stand out among other succulents.

The Hens and Chicks plants form tight evergreen rosettes of fleshy, pointed leaves that are covered in silvery-white hairs, resembling a spiderweb. The leaves have a green or reddish coloration, depending on the variety. With a fast growth rate, it can grow up to 3 inches tall and 12 inches wide, which creates a beautiful, textured carpet-like effect.

Sempervivum arachnoideum crested is a unique variant of Sempervivum arachnoideum distinguished by its distinctive crested fan-shaped growth pattern.

The Sempervivum arachnoideum flower blooms in late summer and produces tall flower stalks that rise from the center of the rosettes. The flowers are star-shaped and can vary in color, ranging from pink to red or even yellow. The monocarpic plant will produce numerous chicks before dying, with offsets or "chicks" around the mother plant's base after flowering.

The Cobweb Hens and Chicks can be propagated through offsets or leaf cuttings. The offsets, which are the small rosettes that grow around the mother plant, can be carefully separated and replanted to establish new plants. Additionally, individual leaves can be removed and rooted to grow new plants. This succulent is relatively easy to propagate, making it a popular choice for plant enthusiasts.

Remember, the Cobweb Hens and Chicks Sempervivum arachnoideum are generally considered non-toxic to both humans and pets. Sempervivums, like many cacti and succulents, require little maintenance once established and will survive near-total neglect.

Watering Needs

Like other succulents, the Sempervivum arachnoideum has adapted to survive in arid conditions, which means it prefers drier soil. It's important to allow the soil to dry out completely between regular watering to prevent overwatering, which can lead to root rot and other issues. Aim for a watering schedule of once every 1-2 weeks in the summer, during the growing season, and even less frequently during the winter months when it goes into a dormant phase.

When watering your Cobweb Hens and Chicks Sempervivum arachnoideum, it's important to water the soil directly rather than spraying or misting the leaves. This helps prevent excess moisture from getting trapped in the cobweb-like threads and causing rot. Water the soil thoroughly until it is evenly moist, but avoid letting the plant sit in standing water, as this can also lead to root rot.

Remember, it's always better to underwater rather than overwater your Hens and Chicks plant. These Sempervivum arachnoideum succulents are quite resilient and can tolerate short periods of drought. Observing the leaves can also give you an indication of when to water. If the leaves start to appear slightly wrinkled or feel soft, it's a sign that your Hens and Chicks plant is thirsty and could use a drink.

Light Requirements

When it comes to growing Sempervivum arachnoideum indoors, they thrive in bright, indirect light. Place them near a south or west-facing window where they will get plenty of sunlight throughout the day. If you don't have access to a lot of natural light, you can also use artificial grow lights to provide the necessary light intensity for the plant.

If you decide to grow your Sempervivum arachnoideum Cobweb Hens and Chicks outdoors, they prefer a spot with full sun to partial sun. These plants can handle direct sunlight, but they may appreciate some protection from intense afternoon sun, especially in hotter climates. A location that receives 4-6 hours of sunlight per day is generally ideal for their growth and color development.

It's critical to remember that during a heatwave or periods of extreme heat, your Sempervivum arachnoideum could still sustain sun damage or get sunburned. You can protect the plant in this situation by moving it indoors or to a shaded area.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The Cobweb Hens and Chicks prefer well-draining soil that allows excess water to escape easily. A good mix for these succulent plants is a combination of regular potting soil and coarse sand or perlite. This mixture helps prevent the roots from sitting in too much water alone, which can lead to root rot. Planet Desert specializes in succulents and has specialized succulent potting soil that includes an organic substrate with mycorrhizae to help with the growth of a healthy root system to help your succulents thrive. As an okay alternative, you can create your own potting mix by combining equal portions of perlite, coarse sand, and good natural potting soil.

The Sempervivum arachnoideum are generally low-maintenance plants and don't require heavy fertilization. In fact, they can do well without any additional fertilizers. However, if you want to give them a little boost, you can use a balanced (5-10-5), water-soluble NPK fertilizer diluted to half-strength. Apply the fertilizer sparingly, only once a year during the growing season, which is typically spring. Avoid fertilizing during the winter months when it is in a dormant phase.

Remember that Sempervivum arachnoideum is native to rocky, mountainous regions, so replicating its natural habitat is key. Make sure to select a fast-draining soil with adequate drainage. As for fertilization, it's better to under-fertilize than over-fertilize, as excessive nutrients can cause the plants to become leggy or lose their vibrant colors. Always follow the instructions and err on the side of caution.

Hardiness Zone & More

When planted indoors, the Sempervivum arachnoideum prefers temperatures between 50°F and 65°F. They can tolerate slightly lower temperatures during their dormant period in winter. It's important to place them in a well-lit area, preferably near a sunny window where they can receive at least 4 to 6 hours of indirect sunlight per day.

If you are living in USDA zones 5-8, you can grow your Cobweb Hens and Chicks outdoors in the garden, year-round. They are generally frost-tolerant and can survive temperatures as low as 20°F. However, it's important to ensure good drainage in the soil to prevent waterlogging during heavy rain or snow.

As for humidity, they are adaptable and can tolerate a variety of humidity levels, from dry to moderately humid environments. It can tolerate average indoor humidity, but it's important to avoid excessively dry conditions. You can increase the humidity around the plant by placing a tray of water near it or by using a humidifier.

So, no matter where you live, as long as you provide the right temperature, humidity, and Sempervivum care, your Cobweb hens and Chicks will be happy and healthy!

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Sempervivum arachnoideum (Cobweb hens and chicks) are unique, silvery-white succulent plants with a unique appearance. They have a fast-growing habit and tight clusters of rosettes, creating a visually appealing carpet-like effect. They produce star-shaped flowers in various colors during the summer and are easy to propagate through offsets or leaf cuttings. They are hardy in USDA hardiness zones 5 to 8, preferring temperatures between 50°F and 65°F and well-lit areas with indirect sunlight. They are non-toxic, making them safe for households with pets or children. Whether you're a succulent enthusiast or just starting your plant collection, Sempervivum arachnoideum Cobweb Hens and Chicks add beauty and intrigue to any space.

Perfect Fit! Completely transformed my chaotic spice drawer.
Color: 4-Pack Black (16"-30" Wide Drawers)
I used to waste so much time digging through a cluttered drawer, shuffling bottles around, and accidentally buying duplicates because things were buried. This organizer completely solved that problem. What I Love: True Low Profile: My kitchen drawers are on the shallower side, and I was worried about jamming. Because these have an ultra-low 0.9" profile, the drawer slides open and closed perfectly smoothly, even when fully loaded with standard jars. Smart Modular Design: The fact that it comes in a 4-pack is incredibly convenient. It allowed me to customize the layout to fit my exact drawer width seamlessly, with zero tools or complicated setup required. Heavy-Duty Quality: Unlike cheap plastic inserts or bulky bamboo that absorbs grease and odors, the oil-resistant carbon steel feels sturdy, premium, and is incredibly easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth. No Slip, No Rattle: The anti-slip design actually works. Jars stay locked firmly in place without rolling around or clinking together when I open the drawer in a rush. Seeing all the labels facing up in a clean "stadium view" makes cooking so much more efficient and enjoyable. If your spice drawer is currently a chaotic treasure hunt, do yourself a favor and upgrade to this—it is worth every penny!

Sturdy, with multiple uses around the kitchen and the rest of the house too
Color: 4-Pack Black (16"-30" Wide Drawers), Color: 4-Pack Black (16"-30" Wide Drawers)
These racks have a slim line and they are quite versatile in terms of arranging, which makes them easy to fit with a variety of drawer measurements. The angle of the stepped section is great- enough to make the labels on your bottles easily visible, but not so sharply angled that the edges of the jars are likely to block closing the drawer (and thus be useless). The listing makes it easy to determine whether they will fit. Round jars will also be stable in these racks, and you can double-stack the shorter spice jars. They would also be great for organizing jars of sprinkles and sanding sugars in your baking area. The racks are very sturdy and well made. The coated finish does make it easy to clean by just wiping with a damp sponge. I also found a use for them in my craft room, where they hold multiple containers of glitter and make it very easy to find what I am looking for in a range of similar colors. I have a lot of my glitter in a metal cart, and the rack can be placed over the edge of the cart, so it's also easy to layer some smaller containers underneath and lift the rack in one movement to access those. I've also considered using them as thread racks. I think you could probably come up with any number of handy uses for them. Overall I'd say these are an excellent value for the money and probably an even better value in terms of saving you time and aggravation when looking for the spices, sprinkles (or glitter!) you want to use.

🌶️ Adjustable, sturdy spice organizer that saved my small side drawer
Color: 4-Pack Black (16"-30" Wide Drawers)
I picked this iSPECLE 4-pack spice drawer organizer because I needed a neater way to store spice jars without them rolling around or getting buried in the drawer. Thank heavens it's adjustable because I'm using it in a small side drawer, and that flexibility makes a big difference. It is meant for drawers about 15" to 30" wide, so it should fit a good range of kitchen drawer sizes as long as the drawer has enough depth for your jars. The carbon steel feels sturdier than the thin plastic spice inserts I've seen in discount and big-box stores, and the black finish gives it a cleaner, more modern look inside the drawer. I like that the two-tier design angles the jars enough to see the labels more easily, instead of having everything flat and stacked on top of each other. It is best for adults, older teens setting up a kitchen, small apartment users, RV owners, or anyone trying to make a cluttered spice drawer easier to use. The low-profile design is also important because taller organizers can cause drawer jamming, especially if your spice jars are a little bigger. This one keeps things more contained without adding too much height. For value, getting four pieces makes it more useful than buying one small insert at a time, and the metal construction feels like it should hold up better than many cheaper plastic options. 🔑 Key Features 👉 4-piece spice drawer organizer set 👉 Adjustable fit for 15"-30" wide kitchen drawers 👉 2-tier angled design helps labels stay visible 👉 Carbon steel construction feels sturdy and more durable than basic plastic inserts 👉 Low-profile shape helps reduce drawer jamming 👉 Anti-slip and oil-resistant surface makes it easier to keep clean 👉 Black finish looks neat and modern inside the drawer ✨ Pros ✅ Adjustable pieces are helpful for smaller or oddly sized drawers ✅ Makes spice jars easier to see and grab quickly while cooking ✅ Metal design feels stronger than thin plastic organizers ✅ Low enough that the drawer still closes smoothly in my setup ✅ Helps turn a messy side drawer into a more organized space ✅ Easy to wipe down if spices or oil residue get on it ⚠️ Cons ❌ You still need to measure your drawer height and spice jars before ordering ❌ Larger seasoning bottles may not sit as neatly as standard spice jars ❌ Black finish may show dust or light spice residue more than clear plastic ❌ Works best in a drawer, not as a countertop display rack 💡 Final Thoughts Overall, this is a practical upgrade for anyone who wants their spice drawer to look cleaner and function better without a complicated setup. I especially like that it adjusts, because a small side drawer can be tricky to organize. It feels sturdy, looks nicer than cheap plastic inserts, and makes it easier to find spices while cooking. I'd recommend it for adults, older teens, apartment kitchens, RV kitchens, or anyone who likes a more organized cooking space.

Works well, very adjustable
Color: 4-Pack Black (16"-30" Wide Drawers)
I love these so much. They are super low profile, which solved the problem of the last set of these that I got that were way too tall for my shallow little drawers. They do exactly the job they say, and before you say that you could just lay your spices flat, this allows for easy access to pick them up since they're at an angle. The only complication for something like this is that your spices have to be pretty uniform in size. If that's not an issue for you, then this will be a good fit. I have really struggled to organize with limited space in this kitchen, and it's little solutions like this that are simple but really make a big difference. My drawers are quite narrow in addition to being quite shallow, so I actually used this as two separate organizers instead of sliding them to fill the whole drawer, though that would also be really effective. The adjustability is really the genius of this design. I might not pay $25 to house $25 worth of spices, except there really isn't another solution in my kitchen so I'm quite grateful for these at this price!!

Perfect for Organizing Spices Without Taking Up Counter Space
Color: 4-Pack Black (16"-30" Wide Drawers)
I’ve been wanting a cleaner way to organize my spices, and these drawer inserts worked out really well. They fit nicely inside my kitchen drawer and make it so much easier to see every label at a glance instead of digging through a cabinet. The adjustable design is helpful because you can customize the width depending on your drawer size. The metal construction feels sturdy and durable, and the racks stay in place without sliding around every time the drawer opens. I also like that the bottles don’t rattle around. Installation was basically effortless: just place them in the drawer and arrange your spices. It instantly made the kitchen look more organized and functional. Great option if you’re trying to maximize space and declutter your countertops.
