The genetically enhanced HarvXtra; technology fundamentally changes the relationship between forage quality and stage of maturity by modifying lignin content (ADL) beyond what is possible with conventional breeding techniques. In 2015, several trials were planted to compare HarvXtra alfalfa and one or more alfalfa varieties selected for improved quality using conventional breeding techniques.
The HarvXtra; trait provided a significant improvement overall commercial check varieties for acid detergent lignin (ADL) and neutral detergent fiber digestibility (NDFD) at every sampling date in this experiment. Lignin (ADL) content in HarvXtra alfalfa was more than 20% lower than any of the commercial check varieties at the last sampling date.
