Anthurium balaoanum

Anthurium balaoanum is a climbing Anthurium species with slender stems, long petioles and clear sagittate leaves. Its foliage has a smooth green surface on both sides, with a pointed front section, broad rear lobes and a deep sinus.

Anthurium balaoanum is native to Ecuador, where it grows in wet tropical forest as a subshrub or epiphyte. Published botanical treatments note slender climbing stems, long petioles and green sagittate leaves.

Anthurium balaoanum key traits

  • Growth habit: Slender climbing Anthurium with elongated internodes.
  • Leaf shape: Green sagittate blades with a pointed tip and pronounced basal lobes.
  • Leaf texture: Firm, subleathery foliage held on long petioles.
  • Climbing response: Develops a clearer outline when allowed to grow vertically.

Anthurium balaoanum indoor care

  • Light: Provide bright filtered light and protect soft or pale foliage from harsh midday sun.
  • Watering: Water when the upper part of the substrate has started to dry, then drain thoroughly.
  • Substrate: Use a loose Anthurium mix with bark, coco chips, pumice or perlite so roots receive moisture and oxygen.
  • Temperature: Keep warm, ideally around 18–28 °C, and protect from cold wet substrate.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity helps new leaves expand cleanly; pair humidity with gentle airflow.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted complete fertiliser.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots fill the pot or the mix begins to collapse.
  • Support: Add a pole, plank or textured support early so aerial roots can attach.

Anthurium balaoanum issues to check

  • Yellowing lower leaves: Check for compacted substrate, cool roots or a pot staying wet for too long.
  • Brown edges: Review humidity, watering gaps and fertiliser strength.
  • Distorted new growth: Inspect young leaves for thrips or mites and stabilise humidity.
  • Soft stems or crown: Check root health and improve drainage immediately.

Anthurium balaoanum handling and safety

Anthurium balaoanum should be kept away from pets and children that may chew plant material. Like other Anthuriums, it contains calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.

Anthurium balaoanum name background

Anthurium belongs to the family Araceae. The genus name comes from Greek anthos, meaning flower, and oura, meaning tail, referring to the spadix. The species epithet balaoanum refers to Balao in Ecuador.

Good, inexpensive replacement filter
I've used these filters for a couple years (four replacements) on my Subaru Crosstrek, and they seem to do the job well, probably as well as the original. I generally remove and clean them every three months, and replace them every six.

Save some money by doing your own cabin filter change! (You won't notice a difference).
So, one day I was getting an oil change at the dealership, and the associate told me that cabin filter was pretty dirty, which I believed because of the places I take the car, and she said that they could change it while they were finishing up the rest of their inspection, since they already had it apart. I asked her "How much?", and then we both had a laugh when she said "$90." I told her I'd take care of it. It took two days for Amazon to get a replacement filter to me, twenty minutes to watch a You Tube video showing how to replace the cabin filter on my car (I watched it twice), and then about twenty-five minutes to replace the filter itself--I keep a messy glove compartment, so a good portion of the time was loading and unloading that nightmare. In the end, under $15 for the filter, maybe 45 minutes to watch and replace, and the cabin filter hasn't been this good since I first bought the car. This replacement version was as good as the OE filter, fit exactly the same, there's no difference in airflow that I can tell, and so far (6 months later), it seems to be holding up pretty well. We'll see what it is like after a year. I did get the oil changed about a week ago, and the technician didn't raise any alarms about the filter, so everything seems to be working. $90 for a new filter? You can do it yourself cheaper.
