Forage collards are an excellent choice for wildlife food plots, particularly for attracting and nourishing deer. These hardy, nutrient-rich plants are a member of the brassica family and offer numerous benefits for both deer and land managers. Forage collards will remain vegetative throughout the summer, it will not bolt.

Key Benefits of Forage Collards for Deer

  1. High Nutritional Value:

    • Forage collards are packed with protein (up to 20-25%) and essential nutrients, making them highly attractive and beneficial for deer, especially during the fall and winter months.

    • They provide a reliable food source when other natural forage is scarce.

  2. Cold Tolerance:

    • Forage collards are extremely cold-hardy and can withstand frost and freezing temperatures. In fact, frost can improve their palatability by converting starches into sugars, making them even more appealing to deer.

  3. Long Growing Season:

    • These plants have a long growing window, providing forage from early summer through winter. They remain green and nutritious even after many other plants have died back.

  4. Low Maintenance:

    • Forage collards are relatively easy to establish and maintain. They grow well in a variety of soil types and require minimal management once established.

  5. High Yield:

    • Forage collards produce abundant leafy greens, offering a high volume of forage per acre. This makes them a cost-effective option for food plots.

How to Use Forage Collards in Deer Food Plots

  1. Planting Time:

    • Plant forage collards in early summer or early fall to ensure they are well-established before winter.

  2. Soil Preparation:

    • Conduct a soil test to determine pH and nutrient levels. Forage collards prefer a pH of 6.0-7.0.

    • Till the soil and incorporate lime or fertilizer as needed to optimize growth.

  3. Seeding Rates:

    • Broadcast or drill seeds at a rate of 5-8 pounds per acre. For smaller plots, adjust accordingly.

  4. Weed Control:

    • Keep the area free of weeds, especially during the establishment phase, to reduce competition for nutrients and sunlight.

  5. Deer Attraction:

    • Forage collards are highly attractive to deer, but it may take some time for deer to recognize them as a food source. Once they do, they will heavily browse the plants.

Challenges of Forage Collards

  • Initial Acceptance: Deer may take time to start feeding on forage collards, especially if they are not familiar with the plant.

  • Overbrowsing: In areas with high deer density, forage collards can be overbrowsed, reducing their effectiveness. Consider planting larger plots or mixing with other crops to mitigate this.

Why Forage Collards Stand Out

Forage collards are a versatile and reliable option for deer food plots. Their cold tolerance, high nutritional value, and long growing season make them a standout choice for supporting deer health and attracting them to your property. Whether you’re managing for hunting or conservation, forage collards are a valuable addition to any wildlife food plot program.

I like the design of these dermaplane razors
I have been using a different brand that folds in half for easy travel but the drawback was a small and unreliable handle. Not so for these razors – the straight handle allows for a more controlled and steady shave, I don’t have to worry about my razor folding up mid stroke. The blades themselves are a decent length and come in two different sizes. I have been using the larger ones for dermaplaning and touch ups whereas the smaller blades work great for shaping up eyebrows. These are not the highest quality razors, I mean not terrible but I did have one of the razor parts pop off of the handle unintentionally. I feel like $13.99 is on the higher end for 12 razors, I have seen similar blades for cheaper and larger quantity (although they didn’t have the two different sizes).

12 pack derma planing razors
I am a huge fan of derma planing and was quite intrigued by this set of razors. I was curious how they'd stack up to my tried and true disposable razors hat I've been using for years. First, they look and feel pretty nice - definitely nicer than my current ones. I do wish the handles were a lil more grippy because they get slippery very easily if they get wet or if you accidentally get oil/lotion on them. There isn't any indication of how many times you can use each razor or if they're only single use. There are two different sized razors included, but I'm not sure what the smaller ones are for - I wish they'd include some instructions! Currently priced at $13.89 for 12 razors, I find the price to be too high for what you receive. They are nice razors, yes, but they are not premium quality.

Effective dermaplaning wands
These razors work really well for removing my peach fuzz. I have a fuzzy chin and hair on my knuckles that’s hard to get off with a larger razor. These come in two sizes for precision dermaplaning. I apply some jojoba oil to my skin before dermaplaning and there is no irritation. I love the frosty translucent handles, they look clean and professional. There are twelve to a pack and they come in a little box to keep them all together. These are a great value for the quality.

Fast & Easy
These work really good. I have been waxing for over 20 years and I just wanted to try something new. This set comes with two different sizes. I used the large blade for my chin and lip. And the smaller blade for my eyebrows. The handle is sturdy and not flimsy. Comes with a case. I already stuck one of each in my travel bag!

work well + good value for the pack
Finally got a chance to try these recently. They're exactly like the ones I already had, that I paid a little more for. I think these are a good value and work pretty well - not as well as the better beauty store razors, but better than like dollar tree or something. I like the size of the handle. I consider them disposable, especially if you're using with a hair identifying powder spray or oil.
