Pittosporum tobira 'Variegata' is a beautiful variegated Japanese Mock Orange shrub with leaves of light green and creamy-white irregular margins that add contrast and brightens any landscape. The small, inconspicuous spring flowers, with their orange-blossom fragrance, are a delightful bonus for any garden.
A medium-sized, evergreen shrub, variegated tobira is smaller and slower-growing than the species, reaching an average size of 6-8 feet or larger, but is easily maintained at 4-6 feet with hand pruning or shearing. For a natural form, hand prune with discretion, or shear into a box shape - either way, both forms offer excellent privacy.
Slow-growing and low-maintenance, Variegated Japanese Pittosporum is perfect as a border shrub or hedge, and its dappled pale-green foliage is an attractive addition to cut flower arrangements.
Pittosporum tobira 'Variegata' is versatile and easy to grow in California’s mild climates, thriving in USDA zones 8-11. This adaptable, drought-tolerant shrub grows well in full sun or partial shade, and withstands both coastal conditions and inland heat. Prized for its variegated foliage, Japanese Mock Orange also bears small, inconspicuous flowers in spring with a lovely fragrance similar to orange blossoms. If you enjoy perfumed spring breezes, be sure to prune after flowering.
With its striking variegated foliage, delightful fragrance, and adaptable nature, Pittosporum tobira 'Variegata' offers year-round beauty that will transform your landscape.
