Viola cornuta 'Large Flower Mix' Horned Violet / Tufted Pansy 'Large Flower Mix'

Masses of large cheerful pansy-like flowers in vibrant cottage colours on neat compact mounds of glossy mid-green foliage — Viola cornuta 'Large Flower Mix' is the cool-season cottage workhorse that flowers through autumn, winter and spring when most other plants have stopped, providing essential cool-season colour for containers, window boxes and front-of-border positions.

If you want cheerful colour in the months when most cottage plants are dormant, Viola cornuta is your answer. The "Large Flower Mix" delivers the substantial pansy-like flower size combined with the superior hardiness and longer flowering season of the cornuta species (unlike standard pansies, Viola cornuta is hardy enough to overwinter outdoors in most UK gardens). The flower mix typically includes vibrant blues, purples, yellows, whites, oranges and bicolours, all with the characteristic "smiling face" pansy markings. Compact 15–20cm habit suits front-of-border, container, and window-box display. Long flowering season: from October through April–May, with some plants continuing to flower throughout mild UK winters. Hardy biennial typically grown as a hardy annual; in mild gardens often behaves as a short-lived perennial returning for a second season. RHS Plants for Pollinators recognised.

A note on growing

Viola seeds, like Pansy seeds, need darkness to germinate — the opposite of most cottage seeds. Cover the seed tray with cardboard or black plastic until germination occurs (10–20 days). Maintain 15–18°C (cool conditions suit Viola genetics; high heat actually inhibits germination).

Two sowing strategies for two flowering seasons:

  • For autumn-winter flowering: sow indoors February–March for planting out in May; plants flower from October through winter.
  • For spring flowering: sow indoors August for transplanting in autumn; plants overwinter as established rosettes and flower from late spring.

Plant out in sun or light shade in moist but well-drained fertile soil. Deadhead religiously to maintain the long flowering season — without it, plants set seed and decline rapidly.

Where it shines

In autumn-into-spring containers, window boxes and patio pots — Viola cornuta is the workhorse that keeps colour going through the cooler months when summer bedding has finished. As underplanting beneath spring bulbs — Violas continue flowering through the bulb display, providing colour at ground level while the bulbs rise above. At the front of cottage borders for low-growing cool-season colour. In children's gardens for the cheerful "smiling face" flowers. Edible flowers with mild sweet flavour — beautiful as cake decorations or salad garnish.

Plant alongside

For a classic spring container, combine Viola cornuta with tulips (matching cool-season timing with contrasting height) and Forget-me-not 'Victoria Mixed' (matching pastel palette at compatible heights). For autumn winter colour, pair with Pansy 'Swiss Giant Ullswater' (matching habit with larger flowers) and Calendula 'Wintersun' for warm-and-cool seasonal contrast.

Best fun indestructible toy
Color: Crinkle Duck (Yellow), Size: Large
Truly indestructible no matter how much our oittie tries. She has owned it for three months works at destroying every day with no success. She carries it everywhere. Best purchase for chewer, more fun than the popular rubber heavy duty toy. Do not hesitate your pup will thank you for this fun distraction.

My dog loves this toy!
Color: Bunny (Gray), Size: Large, Color: Bunny (Gray), Size: Large
High quality, big toy, perfect for a medium to large size dog. After a few months of serious chewing I had to buy another one, but well worth the money! Rocky loves it.

Great toy but if your dog is an aggressive chewer, please think twice.
Color: Crinkle Chicken (Brown), Size: Large
I received this on May 23rd and on June 8th, after playing with this thing every day, our recently acquired 36 lb dog finally ripped it open and got out all the plastic and the squeaky part. Lily Belle will miss you, chicken. Lily loooooved this toy! She'd toss it in the air, chew on it, pull it with her teeth etc. but as much as she loved it, we won't replace it. It's just not durable enough for her. If your dog is an aggressive chewer, you might want to try a different toy. I hate that this lasted just a smidge over two weeks because Lily seemed to truly enjoy this toy. RIP, squeaky chicken!

Great Value Toy
Color: Crinkle Duck (Blue), Size: Large, Color: Crinkle Duck (Blue), Size: Large
This toy has been one of my dog’s absolute favorites. He gets excited every time he sees it and will carry it around the house, toss it in the air, and keep himself entertained for a long time. The shape and texture seem perfect for him, and it quickly became one of his go-to toys over everything else in his basket. What I really like is that it holds up reasonably well for the price. It’s definitely not indestructible, and after a lot of play, it will sometimes start to rip—usually around the feet first since that’s where my dog tends to grab and chew the most. But honestly, considering how affordable it is, I don’t mind replacing it when needed. It’s inexpensive enough that rebuying feels worth it because he genuinely loves it that much. I’d rather keep buying a toy he is obsessed with than spend more on something that just sits untouched. It’s fun, cute, and keeps him happy, which is what matters most. Overall, I’d definitely recommend it for dogs who love plush toys and playful chewing.

Best affordable squeaker toy
Color: Crinkle Chicken (Brown), Size: Large, Color: Crinkle Chicken (Brown), Size: Large
my dog is obsessed with this toy, this has became his new comfort toy and after having this for about four months the legs are falling off but it’s very durable. The squeaker also moved from the head of the chicken to the body of the chicken but that’s after it was played with every single day. I love that it has two squeakers and it’s the perfect toy for my dog.
