The Cercestis mirabilis is a rare and striking climbing plant in the arum family (Araceae). With its large, deep dark green leaves veined with silver-white veins, it has an almost graphic appearance. It is a plant that looks both elegant and sturdy at the same time, making it a real eye-catcher in any houseplant collection.
Origin
This species is native to West and Central Africa, where it grows as a climbing plant in tropical rain forests. In nature, it can climb trees with its long tendrils and form impressively large leaves. In cultivation, it remains somewhat more compact, but retains its distinct leaf pattern.
Characteristics
The leaves are large, arrow-shaped and leathery in texture. The dark green base is strongly contrasted by thick silver-white veins, which give the plant an almost artistic character. As the plant ages and gains support, the leaves develop an even more imposing size. The stems snake around a climbing support or moss stick, emphasizing its natural growth form.
Care
Light
Lots of bright, indirect light is ideal. Direct midday sun can cause leaf damage, but morning or evening sun is well tolerated.
Temperature
Warmth is important: 20-28°C during the day, and never below 16°C at night.
Substrate
An aerated and organic-rich mixture with tree bark and coconut fiber works well. The substrate should drain well, but still be able to remain slightly moist.
Humidity
A humidity of 65-80% is desired to keep the leaves beautiful. Regular spraying or a humidifier will help the plant grow strong and healthy.
Nutrition
During the growing season, fertilize lightly weekly with a balanced plant food.
Watering
Use only demineralized water. Keep the substrate evenly slightly moist, but avoid wet feet. Let the top layer just dry up before watering again.
Growth and ornamental value.
Cercestis mirabilis Combines a tropical look with an almost graphic pattern on the leaves. For lovers of unusual Araceae, this is one of the most exclusive species. With sufficient light and moisture, it quickly develops new leaves and can climb impressively, making it a showpiece in the home or greenhouse.
