Echinocactus grusonii, commonly known as the Golden Barrel Cactus, is a popular succulent native to Mexico, renowned for its distinctive globe-shaped form and striking golden-yellow spines. This cactus can grow up to 3 feet tall and 5 feet in diameter, featuring deep ribs that enhance its barrel-like appearance. The spines can reach lengths of up to 3 inches, arranged in clusters that form a dense crown at the top.
Key Features:
- Flowers: Produces bright yellow flowers from late spring to early summer, which bloom from the apex of mature plants.
- Fruit: The fruit is edible and ripens in late summer to early fall, containing fleshy pulp and small seeds.
Care Requirements:
- Light: Requires full sun exposure for at least 6 hours daily; can tolerate moderate shade.
- Watering: Water sparingly; allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the growing season (summer), water when the topsoil feels dry, reducing frequency in winter.
- Soil: Thrives in well-draining soil, such as a cactus mix or sandy loam.
Additional Notes:
Echinocactus grusonii is drought-tolerant and suitable for xeriscaping. It prefers temperatures between 15-30°C (59-86°F) during growth and can withstand light frost. However, it should be protected from extreme cold and overwatering to prevent root rot. This resilient cactus makes an excellent addition to rock gardens or as a statement plant in containers.
