PENSTEMON palmeri (Palmer Penstemon) is a perennial flowering plant native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It belongs to the genus Penstemon in the family Plantaginaceae. It is native to arid and semi-arid regions, including desert areas and rocky slopes. It can be found in parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and northern Mexico. It is adapted to thrive in well-drained soils, including sandy or rocky soils.
Palmer Penstemon is a tall and erect herbaceous plant that can reach heights of 3 to 5 feet (0.9 to 1.5 meters). It has slender, sturdy stems with lance-shaped or linear leaves. The leaves are typically gray-green or blue-green in color and may have a waxy coating. This species is well-adapted to the hot and dry conditions of its native habitat. It can tolerate drought and high temperatures. The gray-green foliage and waxy coating on the leaves help reduce water loss through transpiration.
The plant produces showy, tubular flowers that are usually a vibrant shade of pink to magenta. The flowers have five lobes and are arranged in dense, elongated clusters along the upper portion of the stems. The blooming period typically occurs in late spring to early summer. The tubular flowers of Palmer Penstemon are attractive to a variety of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. They visit the flowers for nectar and play a crucial role in the plant's pollination and reproduction.
Palmer Penstemon can be cultivated in gardens that mimic its native arid conditions. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It can be an excellent addition to xeriscapes, native plant gardens, or wildflower gardens in arid regions.
