The coral cactus, known as Euphorbia lactea 'cristata' despite its name, isn’t a cactus but a unique hybrid of two succulent species. With its striking appearance in shades of green, blue-grey, or whitish-green, this low-maintenance plant is an eye-catching and easy-to-care-for houseplant.

Hailing from Africa, this fan-shaped succulent is sure to make a statement wherever it's planted. It can grow up to 2 feet tall and 16 inches wide.

Euphorbia plants can probably be successfully grown if you've previously grown any other perennial succulent species.

Furthermore, if you are just starting out, you should know that many succulent species can tolerate neglect. In that situation, a coral cactus is a fantastic option for you.

The coral cactus flowers are small and inconspicuous, typically vibrant pink and purple blooms in the summer and spring. The flowers appear in clusters along the edges of the crested stems, adding a unique touch to this unusual plant.

This drought-tolerant species is low maintenance and easy to care for. These succulents require some initial care, but once established, they are self-sufficient. Contrary to neglect, excessive care and watering often result in the death of succulents.

When and How to Water Your Coral Cactus

This coral cactus plant can withstand droughts and doesn't need to be watered frequently to survive. Let the soil completely dry out between waterings, and if in doubt, give it a little more time before watering again. Less water is needed if living in a humid location and indoor space. Pay attention to how the plant looks and adjust the watering accordingly.

In the spring and summer, during the active growing seasons, water the plant deeply once the top 2 to 3 inches of soil feel dry, typically every 1 to 2 weeks. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent root rot, as coral cacti are highly sensitive to standing water.

In the fall and winter, the plant enters dormancy and requires much less water. You can reduce watering to once every 3 to 4 weeks, or only when the soil is completely dry. Overwatering during this period can cause root rot and damage to the plant.

When watering, always avoid splashing water on the ruffled top (crest), as moisture trapped here can lead to fungal issues. Use a watering can to direct water toward the soil, ensuring thorough hydration without pooling. Monitor your plant for signs of stress—wilting or shriveling leaves indicate underwatering while yellowing or soft stems suggest overwatering. Maintaining a consistent but cautious watering routine is key to keeping your coral cactus healthy.

Light Requirements - Where to Place Your Coral Cactus

When growing indoors, the coral cactus thrives in bright, indirect light, making it perfect for placement near an east- or south-facing window where it can receive 4 to 6 hours of filtered sunlight daily. Direct sun for prolonged periods can scorch the ruffled crest, so diffuse the light using sheer curtains if needed.

Artificial grow lights can also supplement its light needs in rooms with limited natural light. Rotate your plant occasionally to ensure even light exposure and prevent leaning.

For outdoor cultivation, the coral cactus can be placed in a shaded or partially shaded area where it receives morning sunlight and is protected from intense afternoon rays.

A spot with 3 to 4 hours of gentle sun works best, especially during summer.

Direct exposure to harsh sunlight for extended periods can burn the crest and cause discoloration.

If growing outdoors, gradually acclimate the plant to sunlight to prevent shock.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

If you're looking to grow some gorgeous crested Euphorbia succulent you'll need to make sure you have the right soil and fertilizers. Instead, make or buy a well-draining potting mix, or ideally use our specialized potting mix that contains over 10 natural substrates and mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your plants to thrive.

When it comes to fertilizing, remember that less is more. A small amount of NPK fertilizer once a year in spring will do wonders for your plant's health and growth. Using 100% organic fertilizers also ensures that other beneficial compounds and microbes are added to the soil, without the use of harsh chemicals.

Hardiness Zones & More

When growing indoors, coral cacti thrive at consistent temperatures between 60°F to 85°F, which aligns with most typical household conditions. They prefer moderate humidity but adapt well to lower-humidity environments, making them ideal for indoor spaces. Avoid placing the plant near cold drafts, air conditioners, or heaters, as sudden temperature fluctuations can stress the plant. To keep the plant healthy indoors, ensure bright indirect light and avoid overly humid areas like bathrooms unless there is sufficient airflow.

For outdoor cultivation, coral cacti grow well in USDA hardiness zones 10-11, only in specific regions like southern Florida and Hawaii, where the warm, tropical climate matches their needs.

In these regions, the plant can tolerate outdoor humidity levels but still requires protection from heavy rain and extreme sun.

Place it in a spot with partial shade and well-draining soil to prevent root rot. If temperatures drop below 50°F, bring the plant indoors to protect it from cold damage, as coral cacti are not frost-tolerant.

Wildlife - Coral Cactus Attracts the Following Friendly Pollinators

The Coral Cactus can attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial insects when it produces small blooms under the right conditions. Its unique crested shape and striking appearance can make it a visually intriguing feature in gardens or patios, drawing in wildlife that helps sustain a balanced ecosystem.

According to ASPCA, ingesting this coral cactus in large amounts can be mildly toxic to humans, cats, and dogs. While it is safe to touch and handle, precautions should be taken to avoid accidental ingestion.

How to Propagate Your Coral Cactus

To propagate your coral cactus, you can take stem cuttings from the plant and allow them to callus over before planting them in well-draining soil. Make sure to keep the cuttings in a warm, bright location and water sparingly until roots develop. You can also propagate your coral cactus by division, separating offsets from the main plant and replanting them in their own containers.

Key Takeaways

  1. The Coral Cactus thrives in arid conditions and requires minimal watering, making it an ideal choice for low-maintenance gardens and indoor spaces.
  2. Its striking fan-like, wavy shape resembles coral, giving it a sculptural and artistic appeal that stands out in any setting.
  3. While it thrives as an indoor plant across most of the United States, it can only grow outdoors in specific regions like southern Florida and Hawaii, where the warm, tropical climate aligns with its natural habitat.
  4. The Coral Cactus grows well with bright, indirect light and adds a touch of modern elegance to any home or office space.

The Bottom Line

Overall, the Coral Cactus (Euphorbia lactea 'cristata') is a unique and eye-catching plant with its coral-like appearance and crested growth pattern. This succulent requires bright, indirect light and well-draining soil to thrive, making it a low-maintenance option for indoor gardens. With its striking beauty and easy care requirements, the Coral Cactus is sure to be a standout addition to any plant collection.

I am very satisfied with the overall experience!
Color: Black, Size: D20Plus, Color: Black, Size: D20Plus
The suction power is really strong. Daily dust, hair and debris can be easily cleaned up, and the ground is obviously much cleaner. Although there are no pets at home, it is enough for daily cleaning. What I like most is its self-dust collection function. The 5L large dust bag has a large capacity and can be used for a long time without dumping garbage. It is really worry-free. It is very friendly to people who do not want to take care of the machine frequently. The drawing is very fast and accurate, and the cleaning route is orderly and will not collide randomly. The APP is easy to operate, and the appointment and remote control are very convenient. Generally speaking, it is very cost-effective, time-saving and effort-saving, and worth buying.

Good Robot Vacuum
Color: Black, Size: D20Plus, Color: Black, Size: D20Plus
This robot vacuum is really easy to use and very smart. After one cleaning cycle, it can remember the size and layout of the rooms, and it also allows you to choose different rooms for cleaning. It cleans very thoroughly, and when it finishes, it automatically returns to the dock to empty the dust and recharge. It has truly saved me a lot of time and has become a very helpful assistant at home. It also runs fairly quietly, so it does not disturb daily life too much. For people who are busy and do not have much time for housework, it is definitely worth buying.

Incredible robot.
Size: 11S MAX, Size: 11S MAX
I have had this vacuum for nearly a year now, running it on an automatic schedule every single day, and I am so grateful for this product and how it has improved my quality of life. This vacuum and its automatic schedule has meant that I rarely see any dust or dog hair on my floor and I no longer have to take the time to vacuum. The amount of dust this machine collects is unbelievable- the photo I included of the yield is from HALF of a cycle. Flooring/obstacles I use my eufy on hard floor and short carpet and it works wonderfully. It does snag on high pile rugs so I try to put my bathroom mat up when I remember. Eufy does get stuck on things so it took some time to determine what picking up I need to do before it’s “shift.” This has not been a nuisance, it’s more of a good motivation to do a quick cleanup. Durability Also, long hair is a challenge and I do have to cut it out of the brush head about once a week. I also recently replaced the brush head which was a great reset. The side spin brush also broke down over a few months and replacing that REALLY improved the power of the machine. I’ll be replacing it as soon as I notice breakage now. Noise I think it has gotten a bit louder over the year I have owned it. I used to be able to sleep through the noise, now it’s a bit too loud for me especially as it gently bangs against the walls (doesn’t scuff though). Overall, this is a gift and I will never not have one for the rest of my life

BEST ROBOVAC EVER!
Size: 11S MAX
This is BEST Robovac you'll ever own, IMHO. I purchased the first robovac made by a different company when these little things were a completely new concept. This is BEST Robovac you'll ever own, IMHO. I purchased the first robovac made by a different company when these little things were a completely new concept. It was such a surprise as to how good it was, and how it made a difference in time spent housekeeping every day. I've been a fan ever since (20+ yrs) and have tried many different brands and models. The Eufy is the best! And I have purchased 3 of this model. Depending upon your budget and specific needs, there are things I've learned, and I'm going to break those points down for your consideration. Possibly they may apply to your situation. These points are some requirements that make all the difference to me and my lifestyle. ~~> #1. Two auxiliary brushes.: This is the most important thing for me and is a no brainer, IMHO. The two brushes, one on each side of the front edge (approx 11 and 2 o'clock) sweep the debris to the underneath center of the unit where it is sucked up. Because there are two, they sweep a larger area, and because the vac covers the same areas more than once, you get better cleaning results. This is very important in kitchens and high traffic areas. Also corners are swept from both sides. #2. Undercarriage rotating beater brush: I have both carpeted and uncarpeted areas. I need more than just suction to lift dust, pet hair, dirt, and debris from my floors. My kitchen does not have carpet so an undercarriage beater brush is not a requirement, but my Family room has carpeting, and my Living room has Oriental wool and silk rugs. They need a light agitation to help lift up the dust so the vacuum can easily suction it up. A beater brush is a major requirement for my floors for this reason. #3 Scheduling option: this is WONDERFUL! Our major living areas are scheduled to vacuum after we've gone to bed, and our bedrooms and bathrooms are scheduled while we are gone during the day. Happy feet! #4. Rechargeable on its own! Need I say more? It goes back to the recharging station to recharge itself when it needs more juice. YAY! We live on three floors, and this is a huge plus for us. #5. The Customer service with this company is amazing! If you have any issues, regardless of how small, they will get back to you, and immediately help. They respond, and do not merely send you to a FAQ link. #6. It is gentle and does not smack into your furniture, scuffing it. #7. The more you use it, the cleaner your house will be. Regular dusting is done on a daily basis so there is less and less dirt and dust to deal with. It is amazing the difference! Weekend freedom! #8. You do not have to do much prep at all, just check for loose cords to not become tangled. When I bought my first robovac I didn't use it too often because I was unnecessarily moving furniture, rugs, floor lamps, trash cans, etc. Then one day, I left a door open and the robovac sneaked out of the room I'd religated it to. When I returned home, the little vac had done my whole house (single level @ 2000 sq feet) and it was GREAT. I realized that all I needed to do from then on was to let it go do its thing. Lesson learned. My Eufys are my workhorses and I recommend this little gem of a vac if you are considering it. IMHO It will be a good investment. It has been for me, and my family (including cats and dogs).

Absolute worth the money
Size: 11S MAX
The RoboVac works well for me. Very easy to use, not noisy, easy to empty dust collector out, picks up dust and crumbs etc. better than expected. It works on its own from room to room and transitions just fine from hard to soft surfaces. It even manages my higher pile carpet in some rooms. It‘s not heavy, so I use it upstairs and downstairs, just carry it up or down, plug in and start it. Easy! It works best if you get all cords and anything that it could caught up in out of its way beforehand. Sometimes it gets itself ‚ worked up’ and goes over one area several times which is weird. My house ist quite big and if it works over one area over and over, it does not have enough battery life to do the entire ~16000 sqft. floor on one level with different rooms and changing surfaces (I expected this, no prob. for me). The vacuum results are not as good as using a Miele canister vacuum ( my other vacuum) but good enough so the Miele only has to be pulled out from time to time for a deep vacuuming. I would buy it again.
