Aglaonema 'Red Joy' is a red-toned Chinese evergreen with glossy leaves and a compact basal crown. It grows from short stems, sending up broad leaves on fleshy petioles that gradually build a dense, upright plant.

The foliage carries red to crimson-pink colour across much of the blade, framed by green edging, irregular green patches and occasional speckling. Red petioles add colour through the centre and lower part of the plant.

Aglaonema 'Red Joy' red foliage structure

  • Red-toned Aglaonema with a compact, clumping habit
  • Glossy broad leaves with green margins and irregular markings
  • Crimson-pink blade colour carried on red petioles
  • Short rhizomatous stems that can form several crowns over time
  • Warm-growing plant for gentle, filtered indoor light

Glossy red foliage and crown development

Aglaonema 'Red Joy' is a cultivated Chinese evergreen in the Araceae family. New leaves open from the centre while older leaves gradually move outward and downward.

Aglaonema species are native from north-eastern India through tropical Asia to Papua New Guinea, where they grow in warm, sheltered habitats. Indoors, keep Aglaonema 'Red Joy' away from direct sun, cold draughts and radiator heat, in a free-draining substrate that stays lightly moist.

The name Aglaonema comes from Greek roots meaning bright or clear and thread, referring to the stamens.

Mature plants may occasionally flower with a small spathe and spadix. Spent flowers or ageing leaves can be removed cleanly at the base.

Indoor care for Aglaonema 'Red Joy'

  • Light: Place in bright indirect light or a bright shaded position. Red leaves can scorch in direct sun, especially close to hot glass.
  • Water: Water after the upper 2–4 cm of substrate dries. Keep the root ball lightly moist through the middle, then let the top layer dry again before watering.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky, moisture-balanced mix with fine bark, coco fibre, perlite or pumice, and a small organic fraction.
  • Pot: Use a container with drainage holes. A slightly snug pot helps prevent a wet lower layer around the roots.
  • Temperature: Keep above 18 °C. Red Aglaonema foliage can develop grey or translucent marks after chill exposure.
  • Humidity: Average room humidity is usually enough; if new leaves dry at the edges, raise humidity and keep the plant above 18 °C so growth does not stall.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth. Apply fertiliser to already moist substrate to protect fine roots.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots circle the pot or the plant needs watering much more often than usual.
  • Grooming: Remove old lower leaves cleanly and wipe dust from the glossy surface with a soft damp cloth.
  • Propagation: Divide mature clumps with rooted crowns, then keep divisions warm and lightly moist until new roots hold the mix and new leaves start forming.

Cold marks, roots and curled growth

  • Dry red patches: Check for direct sun, heat through glass or a root ball that dried too deeply before watering.
  • Grey, limp leaf areas: Review recent cold exposure, draughts, cold watering or contact with a cold window.
  • Yellow lower leaves: Inspect the roots if several leaves yellow together, especially after frequent watering.
  • Soft petioles at soil level: Remove the plant from the pot and check for dark, mushy roots or compact wet substrate.
  • Curled new growth: Check moisture consistency and inspect emerging leaves for thrips, mites or mealybugs.

Pruning safety and toxicity

Aglaonema 'Red Joy' can irritate the mouth, tongue and throat if plant tissue is eaten, because its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it away from pets and children, and wash hands if sap contacts your skin during pruning.

Glossy red-toned leaves and red petioles give this compact clumping plant most of its colour.

Disappointed
Color: S6-muti-color
These were great for about 20 minutes then they stopped squeaking...we have 2 left that I have saved but the other 4 do not squeak anymore...disappointed as my dog loves to squeak things...would not buy these again...My dog is only an 8lb dog too...but he can still play with the balls without the squeak...

Great Value for a ball my dog loves!
Color: S6-muti-color
I wish these ball were in the subscription program! My dog gets sooo excited by the new ball, but her interest in things lasts for a few days. She kills the squeak within 11minutes, but the squeaker stays in place rather than becoming a chocking or swallow hazard, and she still loves to chew it. Next, we must throw the ball approximately 723 times the first day, possibly 496 times on day 2, and just 3- 4 on day 3, at which point she will chase the ball before hollering "it's over here if you need it," while she checks on the chipmunk den. We currently have 17 of these balls in our yard (because we have given several leftovers to a less discriminating doodle next door). These balls hold up really well, get her extremely active for the first couple of days, and are a much cheaper than doggie daycare (after an active morning with a new ball, she is happy to chew on it and sleep much of the day). I always have these on hand!

Pieces chewed off
Color: white & green
My Aussiedoodle loves it. I throw it down the hallway, it bounces crazy, and he chases it. The only complaint is that he can't chew much of the ball part. So now I have to have it put away and brought out for special playtime.
