The Christia Obcordata, widely cherished as the Swallowtail Plant or Butterfly Wing Plant, is a rare and whimsical botanical marvel. Native to Southeast Asia, this delicate-looking plant features one of the most uniquely shaped leaves in the plant kingdom. Its foliage forms broad, perfect triangles that look exactly like the outstretched wings of a flock of butterflies resting in the sun.

Adding to its magical appearance are its striking colors. The paper-thin, minty green leaves are heavily banded with deep burgundy and purple horizontal stripes. Because the leaves are held aloft on impossibly thin, dark, wiry stems, the slightest breeze causes the foliage to dance and flutter, bringing the "butterfly" illusion completely to life. It is an enchanting, living piece of art for any rare plant collector.

The Illusion of Flight The Christia Obcordata gets its whimsical look from its incredibly thin, dark petioles (stems). Against a dark background, the stems seem to disappear entirely, making the heavily striped triangular leaves look as though they are floating or fluttering independently in mid-air!
Completely Pet-Safe! You can enjoy this fluttering flock of foliage without any worries. The Christia Obcordata belongs to the legume family (Fabaceae) and is non-toxic and entirely pet-safe for both cats and dogs.
The Dramatic Dropper: Do Not Let It Dry Out! Unlike thick-leaved aroids or succulents, the paper-thin leaves of the Swallowtail plant have absolutely zero water storage. If the soil is allowed to go bone dry, the plant will rapidly crisp up and drop its leaves to conserve energy. Keep a close eye on watering!
☀️Light

Bright, indirect light is essential to keep the distinctive burgundy stripes dark and vibrant. An east-facing window with an hour or two of gentle morning sun is absolutely perfect. However, avoid harsh, blazing afternoon sun. Because the leaves are so incredibly thin, direct midday sunlight will quickly scorch and bleach the foliage.

💧Watering

Consistency is everything for the Swallowtail plant. It prefers to stay evenly, lightly moist at all times. Water thoroughly when the top 1 inch of the soil feels dry to the touch. Do not let the pot sit in a saucer of standing water (which causes root rot), but never let the root ball dry out completely (which causes immediate leaf drop).

💦Humidity

This tropical Southeast Asian native thrives in higher humidity (60%+). While it can adapt to average household humidity, dry indoor air (especially from heaters or AC units) will quickly cause the thin tips of the "butterfly wings" to crisp and turn brown. A humidifier or a spot in a bright bathroom works wonders.

🌿Growing Media

You need a soil mix that walks the line between moisture retention and good drainage. A high-quality indoor potting mix amended with about 30% perlite and a handful of coco coir is ideal. This ensures the roots never dry out too fast, but also prevents them from suffocating in heavy mud.

🌾Feeding

Feed every two weeks during the active growing season (spring and summer) using a balanced, water-soluble houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Because the plant grows relatively fast when happy, it needs regular nutrients to maintain its vibrant leaf patterns.

Common Issues & Quick Fixes
Crispy Leaves & Rapid Dropping

This is the most common issue and is a direct result of underwatering or extremely dry air. The plant cannot tolerate drought. If you accidentally let it dry out and it drops its leaves, don't throw it away! Give it a thorough soak; it will often push out new growth from the bare stems.

Fading Stripes / Mostly Green Leaves

If the beautiful burgundy and purple stripes are disappearing and the leaves are looking pale or mostly green, the plant is simply not getting enough light. Move it to a brighter location with bright, filtered ambient light to encourage the colors to return.

Spider Mites (Tiny Webs)

Spider mites absolutely love thin, delicate foliage, especially in dry, warm environments. If you see tiny, dusty webs or stippling on the leaves, treat the plant immediately with a gentle shower and a neem oil spray. Increasing the ambient humidity is the best preventative measure.

Durable and Resilient
Color: yellow/orange
I fill the dispenser with their normal Kibble food. It's my slow feeder and herding toy. Every morning the Mini Aussies look forward to taking turns pushing this dispenser around as the Kibble falls out. They never miss a Kibble! Often times they push it so hard it hits the kitchen cabinets and literally flys airborne dropping Kibble! This is extremely durable and resilient. Rarely needs to be washed. Easily hand wash when needed. Highly recommend. This is my 2d one purchased. The first one still works but after about one year of use I noticed the plastic thread to screw on top has been damaged. It still works but want to be prepared if it cannot be used safely anymore. Enjoy! The Aussies sure do!

Toy for Pup
Color: yellow/orange
The only toy that my dog will play with. It helps keep him busy while I'm cleaning. It is suitable for small dogs and safe for them. He twists and turns it around but the toy is still in good condition so the quality is great.

Mental stimulation for dogs and fun to watch!
Color: Turn Around, Size: Level 2, Color: Turn Around, Size: Level 2
Perfect mental stimulation for dogs like that like a challenge! My very smart dog figured it out in a few seconds so I use treats that are only a little smaller than the holes to make it more challenging. She doesn’t play with toys like my other dogs so I do make an effort to offer her other outlets to get energy out. I have another dog that finds it challenging, but enjoys it, so I use smaller treats for her to make it easier. I have another dog that has a low tolerance for challenges and walks away from it or tries to chew through it- so I think the level 2 rating is fair as every dog is different! My dogs are 12 lb for reference.

Great tool!
Color: Flip Board, Size: Level 2
Love this interactive toy! I purchased this for our 4 month old husky, looking for something to keep her entertained, and I was not let down! In the beginning, it took her a few good minutes to figure it out, and about a week later, she gets it done in about 2 minutes. If you've never had a husky, let me tell you, these dogs are very inquisitive! But due to her being involved with this, our older pit is now getting in on the fun! This is huge because our pit isn't amused by much! Overall, it's durable enough to withstand puppy chewing, and being carried around. It's also super easy to wipe clean as it's some sort of durable, perhaps reinforced layers of plastic. Even though the puppy figured it out, it still seems to excite her, and considering it keeps both dogs entertained and active mentally, I would absolutely recommend this to any dog owner!
