Thalictrum rochebrunianum: Lavender Mist, Towering Grace

Elegant and ethereal, Thalictrum rochebrunianum rises like a misty veil above the garden with airy clouds of lavender-lilac flowers held on slender, branching stems. Blooming from midsummer into early fall, its golden stamens and soft colour hover delicately over tall clumps of fine, blue-green foliage. Despite its height, it maintains a light, transparent quality—adding vertical interest without visual weight. A pollinator favourite, it’s perfect for layered plantings and shade-friendly borders where movement, height, and softness are welcome.

Plant Characteristics:

  • Height: 150–180 cm
  • Spread: 60–90 cm
  • Flower Colour: Lavender-lilac with golden stamens
  • Flowering Period: Midsummer to early fall
  • Foliage: Lacy, blue-green, fern-like
  • Sunlight Requirements: Part sun to part shade
  • Soil Requirements: Moist, rich, well-drained soil

Uses and Benefits: 'Lavender Mist' is a showpiece for lightly shaded borders, cottage gardens, and naturalistic designs. Its height and airiness allow it to float among neighbouring plants, adding rhythm and softness without crowding. Ideal for attracting pollinators and creating vertical drama, it’s equally at home behind hostas or weaving through grasses. Leave seedheads for autumn texture or cut for delicate arrangements.

Companion Plants: Pair Thalictrum rochebrunianum with the bold, red trumpet flowers of Hemerocallis 'Chicago Apache', the cascading green blades of Hakonechloa macra, and the soft pink, nodding blooms of Anemone 'September Charm' for a layered, part-shade combination that balances strength, movement, and seasonal beauty.

Care Instructions: Plant in part sun or dappled shade with moist, fertile soil. Water regularly in dry spells to support its height. Though self-supporting in ideal conditions, it may benefit from staking in windy locations. Cut back in fall or leave seedheads for late-season interest. Divide every few years in spring to maintain vigour.

History: Native to Japan, Thalictrum rochebrunianum has long been prized for its refined structure and cloud-like flowers. Known as “Lavender Mist,” it remains a garden classic admired for its graceful stature and breezy elegance.

Final Thoughts: Towering yet translucent, Thalictrum rochebrunianum is a master of contrast—bringing both height and softness, light and depth, to the garden with unmatched poise.

Charles Soule's Series Continues to Impress and is Arguably the Best of Marvel's New Canon
Format: Paperback
Darth Vader leads the invasion of Mon Cala. With the Empire tightening its grip across the galaxy, Vader is dispatched by his master to the aquatic world of Mon Cala to track down a rogue Jedi who may be advising the planet's king. With the Inquisitors in tow, Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin face off with one of the first open acts of rebellion in their new Empire. Soule is at his absolute best with this series as he continues to explore a version of Vader haunted by his own inner goodness and memories of the past (the book does contain some references to events of the Clone Wars television show, but you don't need to have seen it to grasp the story). Likewise, his exploration of the seduction of the dark side is fantastic with a new Jedi target willing to use deception and war in order to light the sparks of a future rebellion. The final issue of the book may be one of the best Star Wars comics of the entire new canon with Tarkin hunting Vader for sport (on the latter's request oddly enough) across a desolate and hostile planet. The issue isn't what one expects but makes a great deal of sense when exploring the relationship between these two characters (while also explaining why Vader is so deferential to Tarkin during A New Hope). The final addition is a decent annual that sees Vader investigating the Death Star and sabotage of its construction. The annual isn't the best addition to the series (the artwork isn't up to the standards of the rest of the series), but it does introduce some intriguing ideas about Tarkin and Vader's relationship and the events that set up the Rogue One movie.

Amazing for kids!
Format: Paperback
I've bought several of these for my kids and my niece and they have loved all of them! Tons of activities in each book and my kids take them on our trips for something to do in the plane or car rides. I definitely recommend any of these! We have Sharks, Soccer, Gymnastics, and Monster Trucks.
