The tree of Ohio. The original good luck charm. The one every Midwesterner knows.

Aesculus glabra, the Ohio Buckeye, is the state tree of Ohio and the tree that gave Ohio State University its athletic teams their name, producing the large, glossy, reddish-brown nuts enclosed in a spiny husk that Ohioans and Midwesterners have carried in their pockets as good luck charms for generations. It is a medium to large native hardwood of the Ohio River valley and Midwest that produces creamy yellow to pale green flower clusters in spring, develops a broad, rounded canopy of large, distinctive palmate compound leaves, and turns brilliant orange in fall in one of the most reliable and vivid fall color displays of any native Midwestern tree. If you are looking to buy Ohio Buckeye seeds or grow this native American tree from seed, this is the tree with more cultural identity attached to a single nut than any other tree in the eastern United States.

  • Produces the glossy reddish-brown buckeye nuts that Ohioans and Midwesterners carry as good luck charms
  • Creamy yellow to pale green flower clusters in spring attractive to hummingbirds and bumblebees
  • Bold, palmate compound leaves creating tropical-looking summer foliage unique among native Midwestern trees
  • Brilliant orange fall color, one of the earliest and most reliable fall color trees in the Midwest
  • The state tree of Ohio and the cultural symbol of one of the most recognizable sports programs in college athletics

Things you probably did not know about the Ohio Buckeye

The nut is toxic to most animals but has been used medicinally by Indigenous peoples for centuries. The nuts and leaves of Ohio Buckeye contain aesculin and other glycosides that are toxic to horses, cattle, and humans if consumed in quantity. Despite this toxicity, the nuts were used by many Indigenous peoples of the Ohio Valley and Midwest in preparations for rheumatism and arthritis, ground and mixed with other substances as an external treatment. The toxicity does not prevent the nuts from being carried as good luck charms because the intact nut coat prevents absorption through skin contact.

The tree blooms so early in spring that it is often pollinated by hummingbirds before many bee species are active. Ohio Buckeye produces its flowers earlier in spring than most other native trees, at a moment when temperatures are still cool and many pollinating insects are not yet active. Ruby-throated Hummingbirds that are beginning their northward spring migration through the Midwest are the primary pollinators during this early period, making Ohio Buckeye one of the most important early-season hummingbird nectar trees in the eastern US.

The leaves unfurl in spring before almost any other native hardwood in the Midwest. Ohio Buckeye is consistently the first native hardwood to show leaves in spring across the Midwest, leafing out weeks before oaks, maples, and most other native trees. This early leafing out exposes the new growth to late frost damage, and browning of new Buckeye leaves from late frost is a common sight in Midwestern springs. The tree regrows the damaged leaves from backup buds without lasting harm.

The Buckeye nut was the original good luck token of the American frontier. The practice of carrying a buckeye nut for good luck dates back to frontier settlements of the Ohio Valley in the 18th century, where the nuts were commonly found and the custom apparently originated with Indigenous peoples who attributed protective and medicinal properties to the nuts. The practice spread with Midwestern settlers and became deeply embedded in Ohio cultural identity, eventually attaching to Ohio State University athletics in the early 20th century.

Our pup loves the cronch cronch!
Style: Ball, Size: Medium (Pack of 1)
I bought our 15 month old Coton several Chuck-It toys on an Amazon deal. He is incredibly playful, mischievous, and ball/toy obsessed, especially for anything that makes noise. He can also be very destructive so I love how durable most of their products are - they’re among our longest lasting toys and worth every penny. We have yet to take them to the dog park, but they’re a perfect size for sharing in play time. And they are keeping him busy at home - that’s a good thing. He loves investigating the crunchy-cronchy-crinkly sound which is a nice change from squeakers. It can withstand his destructive chewing well-being, gentle on his little teeth. I love that. Chuck-It is thinking outside the box with a variety of balls to keep dogs engaged! I do worry about the crinkle plastic inside because it is accessible because of the air holes and it feels a little sharp. So this will have to be an at home toy so we can monitor his play.

My dog loves it!
Style: Ball, Size: Medium (Pack of 1)
This crunch ball was a Christmas gift for my 65lbs fur baby. It’s now mid April and he still loves it. He loves running after it and chomping down on it. It is still in good shape despite all the chomping it’s gotta . I highly recommend. He goes back to this toy agin and again! Great buy.

Toughest ball we have found yet. Our doberman loves Chuckit! Balls especially the crunch one. He spreads all the balls and toys we have bought but these lasted the longest. The crunch and the glow in the dark are usually his pick but he has several different choices.

Love this set!!!
Size: Medium (2.5"), Style: Fetch Pack 1
I was trying to figure out which of the many different balls this company offers, and I was getting frustrated but then i was SOOOO happy to see they had multiple sets that had multiple of the different balls they offer!! I bought this set and the other set they offer, but this one was my favorite and I think my dogs too! The orange ball works great and bounces just high enough that it doesn’t clear our patio wall, but enough for him to go and jump up to retrieve. But the glow in the dark ball is his favorite! Both me and my pomsky were blown away how we brought the glow in the dark ball outside just as the sun was going down, and when we brought it back inside it was BRIGHT AND GLOWY!!! Even with the sun going down and not much light left!! He loves to play with it in the house after it’s all glowy from the sun. Sometimes we even glow it up under a light inside the house if it’s dark outside, and he will play with it outside in the dark haha he loves it!!! And I think it’s pretty cool too!! All of the balls this company overs are VERY durable! We realized early on that we cannot give our dog regular tennis balls cuz his favorite thing to do is tear the outside fabric off!! So we were trying to figure out what company has the best balls for dogs so they can’t sit there and try to pry them apart, and we found this company!! We have already bought from them about 3 times and all of their balls are durable and bounce how they say they will bounce!! They have the super bouncers and the glow in the dark one and the one with angles that will bounce in different directions and the ones you can throw REALLYY far! Overall, all the balls from this company are very durable, bounce really good, and keep my dog occupied without allowing him to sit there and tear it apart!!! Which i love cuz I do not like when he stops playing with us to sit there and try to take off the fabric, cuz then he could swallow it! So always buy the balls from this company!!! They are the best and most durable!!!! Also plenty soft for your dogs mouth so they can chew on it a bit and it won’t hurt their teeth/gums!
