Can grow 10' in a year; brittle wood; flowers pale violet with dark spots and yellow stripes inside, very much resemble foxgloves; flower buds often killed during winter in cold areas; prefers deep moist soil but tolerates many sorts; full sun or part shade, protect from wind; has naturalized throughout much of the East.

Paulownia tomentosa, commonly called royal paulownia, empress tree or princess tree, is native to China. It is a fast-growing, deciduous tree that is primarily grown for its profuse spring bloom of foxglove-like flowers and its large catalpa-like green leaves. It was first introduced into the United States in the mid 1800s, and has since escaped cultivation and naturalized in many areas of the eastern U.S. It is an upright to spreading deciduous tree that typically grows to 40’ tall with a rounded crown. It is noted for its profuse bloom of fragrant, tubular, funnel-shaped, pinkish-lavender flowers (to 2” long) with interior dark purple spotting and creamy yellow striping. Flowers appear in spring in clusters (to 14” long) before the foliage. Flower aroma is reminiscent of vanilla. Flowers are edible and are sometimes added to salads. Flowers are followed by oval, woody, dehiscent seed capsules that emerge sticky green and ripen to brown in fall, at which point they split open releasing abundant winged seeds. Ovate, green leaves (to 5-12” long) are lightly hairy above and densely hairy beneath. No fall color. Paulownia is currently placed in its own family. Wood is commercially valuable in Japan.

Genus name honors Princess Anna Paulowna (1795-1865), daughter of Czar Paul I of Russia.

Specific epithet from Latin means having soft woolly hairs.

Problems
No serious insect or disease problems. Flower buds may be killed by harsh winters.

Garden Uses
Beautiful specimen flowering tree for lawns and gardens. Has also been used effectively in poor soils in surface stripmine reclamation areas.

My new favorite socks!
Color: White, Size: Medium
As someone that struggles with cold hands and feet, I started experimenting with using merino wool socks over my usual cotton and polyester blend socks. I am very pleased to report that these merino wool socks are very comfortable and warm. They have a secure and comfortable fit--ideal for casual everyday use. These socks perform well as athletic socks for winter soccer, and will slowly take over my sock drawer! These socks have a good thickness to them and feel durable for normal wear. The elastic portion of the sock stretches to accommodate wider ankles (like mine) and does not feel like it will lose elasticity quickly. Very fair value for the cost in my book.

Great product
Color: Black, Size: Medium
Super soft and fits like a sock should. I wash in a lingerie bag on gentle cycle and hang dry due to fabric type. My feet don't get sweaty which is why I have chosen merino wool products as all of my base layers (socks, underwear, etc)

Lightweight and Comfortable, but very thin
Color: Black, Size: Large
I used the Lapulas Merino Wool Quarter Socks for Men on a Europe trip where I was walking pretty much all day, and overall they performed well. The biggest thing to know right away is that they are very thin. If you’re expecting thick, cushioned socks, these are not that. They feel more like a lightweight layer rather than something padded. That said, the thinness actually worked in my favor for travel. Even after long days of walking, my feet didn’t feel overly sweaty or damp. They seem to handle moisture pretty well, and I didn’t get that uncomfortable “wet sock” feeling, which is a big plus when you’re constantly on the move. They’re also surprisingly decent at regulating temperature. They’re not thick, but they still help keep your feet warm when it’s a bit cold, while staying breathable enough during the day. It’s more of a balanced, all-day comfort rather than heavy insulation. One thing I noticed is that they stretch out a bit after the first use. They’re snug at first, but after wearing them for a day, they loosen slightly. It’s not terrible, but it’s noticeable, especially since they’re already thin. Also, proper care really matters with these. Since they’re merino wool and lightweight, I’d recommend being careful with washing and drying—gentle wash and air drying is probably the best way to maintain the shape and quality. Throwing them in a regular hot wash/dry cycle will likely wear them out faster or affect the fit. Because they’re thin, they fit nicely inside shoes without feeling tight or bulky, which I appreciated when wearing sneakers for long periods. Pros: -Lightweight and comfortable for all-day walking -Good moisture control, feet don’t feel damp -Breathable and not too hot -Helps keep feet warm despite being thin -Easy to pack for travel Cons: -Very thin, not much cushioning -Slightly loosens after first use -Requires careful washing and drying

Too stretchy for my preference
Color: Black, Size: Large
The socks seem to be high quality, but they are too stretchy for my liking. They feel like "compression" socks, and become too thin and stretched when worn (yes I bought the correct size). Even though they have less Spandex than my preferred wool socks (e which are no longer available), they are much stretchier.

Thick and comfortable
Color: Black, Size: Medium
These socks fit 7.5 wide size woman's shoe wearer perfectly. Socks are thick and comfy. They stay in place all day. I got rid of all my old socks and it is a pleasure not having to scrounge for a matching pair. They wash and dry well in machine on wool setting.
