🌲 Podocarpus macrophyllus — Buddhist Pine / Japanese Yew

Podocarpus macrophyllus, commonly known as the Buddhist Pine or Japanese Yew, is an elegant, evergreen shrub or small tree prized for its refined appearance, architectural form, and adaptability to both indoor and outdoor settings. Native to southern Japan and China, this coniferous plant features narrow, leathery, dark green leaves that resemble yew needles but with a softer, more tropical aesthetic. The leaves grow in symmetrical spirals along upright stems, giving the plant a neat, layered look. Though technically a conifer, Podocarpus lacks traditional cones and instead produces small, fleshy fruits. Outdoors, it can be shaped into hedging, standards, or sculptural specimens, while indoors it remains compact and manageable, offering a stately alternative to more common foliage plants. With its calm, orderly presence, Podocarpus macrophyllus is well-suited to minimalist interiors, Zen gardens, conservatories, and patios — delivering year-round greenery with very little fuss.

☀️ Light Requirements

  • Indoors: Prefers bright, indirect light. Tolerates medium light but may grow more slowly.

  • Outdoors: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Best form is achieved in bright, filtered light.

  • Low light: May result in sparse growth and reduced leaf density.

🌡️ Temperature & Hardiness

  • Ideal temperature: 16–24°C (60–75°F)

  • Minimum temperature: Down to –5°C (23°F) outdoors when mature; protect container plants from frost.

  • Hardiness: RHS H4 — hardy in most parts of the UK with winter protection in colder regions.

  • Humidity: Tolerates average household humidity; does not require misting.

💧 Watering Needs

  • Watering frequency: Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil is dry. Keep evenly moist but not soggy.

  • Container plants: Water more frequently in warm weather; reduce in winter.

  • Avoid: Prolonged drought or overwatering. Ensure good drainage.

🪴 Soil & Repotting

  • Soil type: Free-draining loam-based compost (e.g. John Innes No. 2 or 3) with added grit.

  • pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (5.5–7.0)

  • Repotting: Every 2–3 years or when rootbound. Best done in spring.

🌱 Feeding

  • Growing season (spring–summer): Feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertiliser or use slow-release granules.

  • Autumn–winter: Feeding can be paused unless plant is actively growing.

✂️ Pruning & Maintenance

  • Pruning: Responds well to light pruning and shaping. Ideal for formal topiary or informal hedging.

  • Maintenance: Trim to shape in late spring or early summer.

  • Growth rate: Moderate; typically 15–30 cm per year in good conditions.

🌾 Propagation

  • Cuttings: Semi-hardwood cuttings in summer. Use rooting hormone and keep humid.

  • Seed: Slow to germinate and rarely used in home cultivation.

🐛 Pests & Problems

  • Generally pest-free: Occasionally may attract scale insects or spider mites indoors.

  • Signs: Yellowing or sticky leaves; poor airflow may encourage pests.

  • Prevention: Avoid overwatering, maintain good ventilation, and clean foliage as needed.

🧤 Toxicity & Safety

  • Toxicity: Not considered highly toxic, but ingestion of seeds or plant parts should be avoided.

  • Pet-safe tip: Best kept away from nibbling pets as a precaution.

🏡 Indoor & Outdoor Care Highlights

  • Perfect for formal gardens, patio pots, bonsai, and indoor statement greenery.

  • An excellent choice for structured, contemporary designs or traditional Japanese-inspired schemes.

  • Can be styled into a topiary, tree form, or informal shrub.

  • Low-maintenance, long-lived, and adaptable to varied conditions.

  • Works beautifully in containers paired with stones, gravel, or minimalist planters.

Excellent comfort and support!
Size: Standard (Mid Loft), Number of Items: 1
The pillow feels premium from the first night and delivers soft and stable support. The pillow holds its shape and didn't have any chemical smell out of box. Worth the price and I would buy it again.

Not really medium, but a quality pillow nonetheless
Size: Standard (Mid Loft), Number of Items: 1
It is absolutely the case that with this type of product, most people who review it don't actually know what they're talking about. Latex foam pillows are not like any other kind of pillow, so your expectations have to be completely different. It's not about thickness, height, or anything else but comfort. Comfort in this case comes from you choosing the correct level of FIRMNESS. Since each company has their own idea of what constitutes each level, the difficulty is figuring out which one is going to work for you. Your spine - including your neck, should not be anything but straight/aligned when your head sinks in. Regardless of what the pillow LOOKS like, it is how your head lays that matters. Latex foam is not like memory foam AT ALL, so don't expect it to be. LF bounces back immediately when you move off of it, and it can last for a very, very long time with proper care. Yes, it does have a natural, rubber odor. This fades a bit with time, but will never go away. After all, it IS a rubber product. EXPECT A SCENT! To keep yourself from being bothered, and to extend the life of the pillow, use TWO different types of pillow covers. As a first layer, I use one meant for encasement from allergens and bugs. It's waterproof (not vinyl, and not loud). It's the kind that cannot go in the dryer after being washed. The second layer is a simple cotton cover/case that you should wash and dry depending on factors like oil production, frequency in hair washing, and frequency in sheet changing, etc. Using both will dramatically extend the life of the pillow. Water is the enemy. Moisture will cause the foam to break down into pieces. The crumbling is pretty nasty, so avoid it! The case this one comes in is admittedly cheap and pathetic. Not every company has such poor ones, but it won't make a difference if you add the layers I have suggested. *This IS a real latex foam pillow. I have owned enough to know what they smell and feel like. I bought a "medium". I would call it a firm "soft", and so it wasn't for me. Find the right firmness for your neck and sleep needs, and don't blame the damn company for your choice! These ARE the correct height, they smell normal, and the price is average (they're ALL overpriced)! *This does not seem like a completely latex product, but it is close enough that if it were actually medium firmness, I would have kept it.

Perfect size, perfect pillow.
Size: Queen (High Loft), Number of Items: 1
For me, This pillow is the be all and end all when it comes to comfort. I simply melt into luxurious sleep. I have had a bad neck since my early 20’s, so a pillow that doesn’t fit me, can break me. I have spent soooo much money on pillows trying to find The One. Foam is the only way to go in that regard. Another aspect about this pillow that is particularly important to me is how well it fits into my satin pillow case, with no room to slide around, or for the material to bunch up. I allowed the pillow to air on a chair for 24 hours before use, but am still getting a slight odor.

Medium firmness is too flat
Size: Standard (Mid Loft), Number of Items: 1
I got the medium firmness, and it is much flatter than it appears in the photo. I like the feeling and firmness of it, but the height is too flat and causes my neck to strain. I had to return.
