The orange sized fruits can be eaten fresh or used in juices and drinks. The fruits have a red, leathery rind and the edible seeds produce a flavorful juicy pulp. This juice can be processed into syrup (grenadine) or wine. Additionally the juice is also used as a natural dye. Pomegranates are literally chock-full of nutrients like B6, B9, C, calcium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, niacin, thiamin, and honestly too much to continue listing.

Pomegranate trees are happy to be maintained at a low/manageable bush height around 6-8’ tall or can be allowed to extend skyward as a tree, reaching up to 20’ tall. Remember: Pomegranates fruit on new growth, so regular pruning is essential for decent production at any height.

The showy flowers were enough for me to plant this tree by my front door, but the promise of a stained sidewalk and lots of juicy fruits just adds to the appeal! Stop or slow down watering close to harvest time to circumvent fruit-split.
