Lavandula angustifolia

Herb Growing Tips

Light:  'Munstead' prefers full sun

Temperature:  Hardiness Zones 5-9

Watering:  Water adequately, but not excessively, as Lavenders do not do well when over watered. Highly susceptible to root rot and disease if they get too moist for too long, make sure to water the soil, not the plant for best results.

Soil: Good drainage is the biggest factor when considering soil. Lavenders will tolerate a lot- drought, salt, wind and slopes, but they will not deal well with poor drainage and moist soil! Give them loamy soil with a pH of 7 to 8.5.g to drain!

Comments:  Good circulation is vital as lavenders cannot tolerate damp and humid conditions. They need a lot of room to grow and they need a lot of air moving around them to avoid excess moisture which will lead to rot. Lavender are a must have and easy to grow. We have created a wonderful blog on 'How To Grow Lavenders Successfully'!

Herb Description

Lavender 'Munstead' is a dependable performer with profusely blooming lavender-blue flowers. This aromatic herb is a wonderful ornamental in your garden and produces tons of fragrant flowers which are sure to attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.

Also considered a medicinal herb, 'Munstead' has potent antibacterial and anti fungal properties. Used to cure everything from headaches to sunburns, the soothing scent of its oil relaxes the mind, while collagen regenerating agents in the plant renew your skin. The best varieties for medicinal use are 'Munstead' and 'Hidcote', as they are non-hybridized varieties.

English Munstead Lavender

Wonderful for herb sachets and pillows, potpourri and fresh or dried arrangements, 'Munstead' retains its beautiful color and scent after drying. Also a delicious culinary herb, you can add Lavender to your favorite summer drinks and salads or to lend a wonderfully light flavor to fish, meat or soups.

Lavender 'Munstead' is also a great choice for pots and container as it has a smaller habit than other varieties. Flowering early, this dwarf variety of Lavender is more shrub-like than its other English relations and is much more adaptive to heat and humidity than any of the other varieties. Deadheading will keep this fragrant herb blooming continuously from spring through summer.

Important Munstead Lavender Tips:

  • Well drained soil - lavenders will not tolerate poor drainage so add sand if you need to improve the quality of your soil. Most lavender 'deaths' occur because of wet roots. An alkaline soil is best.
  • They cannot tolerate humidity: damp, still air makes them susceptible to fungus ailments
  • Lavenders need full sun- 6 to 8 hours of sunshine for these Mediterranean natives

Nice way to learn about a trip to D.C.
Format: Flexibound
I got this for my kids to read before we went to Washington D.C. The pages are colorful, illustrated, and have short bursts of interesting details about the various attractions available to tourists who are visiting. My kids were eager to find the places on our itinerary and read about them ahead of time. They learned what to expect and were sure not to miss the important aspects of our tours. This book is recommended for 9 to 12 year olds and I think that is the perfect range. There is just enough information to peak their interest and not so much that they get bored by reading a bunch of text. The Table of Contents wasn't that informative in finding specific places, but the index was. My kids preferred to leaf through the whole book and find what was interesting to them.

Not good for travel, picture book only
Format: Flexibound
This is a beautiful book with fantastic illustrations and an engaging color palette. It includes a good variety of historical background information and sightseeing locations. However, it is a better picture book for browsing only. It is not a good travel book for kids to plan their own adventures. Who has ever heard of a travel book without maps?! No maps, no directions, no coordinating subway/bus maps. The printing is exceptionally small, almost too small to read. The book should have been made larger to accommodate the text. The text is excellent, but it printed as if the publisher never expected the kid/parent to read it. On one hand, our family really enjoyed how engaging the book appeared, but we were disappointed in its quality as a travel book. It shouldn’t be marketed as a travel book, but a geography book series.

I loved the switch!
New Yorker Haley found herself on a remote Australian cattle station working as a Jillaroo. One of her roommates is veteran rancher Jenna who is to show her the ropes as part of the contract with this fully paid "switch!". They soon find out that Haley is the worst Jillaroo ever, but she tries very hard and never gives up. I loved all the Aussie terms and descriptions and felt comfortably immersed in the Outback experience! Cheyenne wrote a beautiful story that was serious, yet humorous, filled with very enjoyable characters. I also enjoyed the way in which she crafted their love story and the way in which Haley became a part of the ranch's community. Well done, Cheyenne. This book was totally enjoyable!
