Sealed-Style Terrarium: What That Means

This terrarium is designed to hold humidity and create a stable microclimate—perfect for moss gardens and many tropical plants. In a sealed-style setup, moisture naturally cycles: water evaporates, condenses on the glass, and returns to the soil. If you’re new to planting under glass, our complete terrarium setup and planting guide walks through the full process step by step.

This Wardian Case includes a hinged roof that does not form an air-tight seal, which allows for minimal ventilation—perfect when your plants need a little fresh air. For care tips and what to watch for, see: terrarium care tips .

Feature Sealed-Style Terrarium Open Terrarium
Humidity Higher humidity, moisture retention Lower humidity, dries out faster
Best plants Moss, fittonia, small ferns, tropical cuttings Many succulents & cacti
Watering Less frequent; monitor condensation More frequent; monitor soil dryness
Maintenance Vent briefly if over-condensing Regular watering + faster plant turnover

Plant Suggestions for This Sealed-Style Setup

  • Moss (excellent for humidity and a finished look)
  • Fittonia (nerve plant)
  • Miniature ferns
  • Small tropical cuttings
  • Mini orchids (only if your light and airflow are appropriate)

If you prefer low-humidity plants like succulents, you’ll want far more airflow than a sealed-style setup. For alternative container inspiration, see: succulent-friendly container options .

Materials & Care

Simple Layering Method

  1. Add a thin layer of pea gravel for drainage.
  2. Mix in a small handful of activated charcoal to help keep the terrarium fresh.
  3. Add soil to nearly fill the tray (leave room for moss or top dressing).
  4. Plant gently, tamping soil to remove air pockets.
  5. Water very lightly—sealed-style terrariums need less water than most people expect.

How to Know If You Watered Correctly

  • Light, temporary condensation (especially after planting) is normal.
  • If the glass stays heavily fogged for days, open briefly to vent and allow excess moisture to escape.
  • If soil looks dry and there’s no condensation at all, add small sips of water.

If you run into issues like fogging, mold, or plant decline, our terrarium condensation, mold, and watering guide and long-term terrarium care guide offer detailed troubleshooting.

Seasonal Styling & Display Ideas

  • Collector look: moss + one focal plant to let the green accents shine
  • Woodland vibe: moss + natural stones + small ferns
  • Gift-ready: a memorable piece for housewarmings, birthdays, and anniversaries
  • Refresh anytime: swap textures and plants as seasons change—no need to replace the terrarium

FAQ

Is this a sealed terrarium?

This terrarium is considered sealed-style, meaning it is designed to hold humidity and support a stable microclimate. The hinged roof is not air-tight, so it allows minimal ventilation—perfect for a healthy balance in a planted display.

How often should I water a sealed-style terrarium?

Start with a very light watering after planting. After that, watering is typically infrequent—monitor soil moisture and condensation. If the glass stays heavily fogged for days, vent briefly. If the soil dries out, add small sips of water.

What plants work best?

Moss, fittonia (nerve plant), miniature ferns, and small tropical cuttings are great choices for sealed-style terrariums. Avoid harsh direct sunlight and choose plants with similar moisture needs.

What comes with the terrarium?

You’ll receive the handcrafted glass terrarium with hinged roof, metal tray base with ball feet, and a plastic liner. Plants, moss, stones, and décor props are not included.

Where are H Potter terrariums made?

Interesting Start
Format: Kindle
I have a harder time with why choose books that take place in contemporary versus fantasy books, because oftentimes the scenarios required to make it work just seem to out there for me. I felt like this book kind of strayed into that territory. The whole basis of the book is that Josephine accidentally sees something she honestly does not really even understand and the four guys solution is basically to kidnap her and make her live with them in their home. There was a bit of suspension of disbelief required for me in this book. That being said there were some things I did enjoy in this book. I felt like the men in this book were interesting and different from one another. They weren’t just cut out of hot football players that have the same personalities and ideals. Personally, for me, I really preferred Kylian because he was the nerdy guy, and that just works for me. He also has some sensory sensitivities and because of that and his coping mechanisms he has the ability to connect more with Jo than any of the other guys given her backstory. Josephine as a character is okay for me, I’m interested to see how she evolves. She has a complex/tragic backstory which I think will play into things a lot more in the next books to come. I do think she goes along with the scenario waaaayyyy to quickly and almost passively, which I have a hard time buying into. Overall, I want to see where the next book goes, given it does end with high stakes and a cliffhanger.

Gah! My heart! These boys! So much love!
Format: Kindle
I have so much love in my heart for this book. While that cliffhanger was absolutely atrocious and soul wrecking, I couldn't begin to explain the obsession that has begun in my bones. These characters are delicious, their interactions are so strong and real, and their pasts, their trauma, are so heartfelt and elicit all the feels. I love them, I love their stories, the details and relationships are so poignant that I craved every moment of this journey. I seriously devoured this book, I could not put it down, well into early dawn hours just to finish. It was like breathing, and I didn't want to stop. Abby has a serious new fan, and I'm so happy to have stumbled upon this book and author. Now, I absolutely have to get to the next one because I'm suffocating with the need for Kylian and the others, of course. Soo so worth it!

"Queen of Roses" by Briar Boleyn is a dark fantasy romance that masterfully combines elements of myth, magic, and romance with a captivating King Arthur retelling infused with a Fae twist. From its intricately woven plot to its compelling characters, this novel delivers an immersive reading experience that will leave readers eagerly anticipating the next installment. Right from the start, I was drawn in by the prologue!!!
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
Queen of Roses (Blood of a Fae #1) by Briar Boleyn Genre General Fiction ( Adult), Romance, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Dark Romance “More primordial than the stars. My name was on his lips as he promised unspeakable darkness to any who came between us.” Right from the start, I was drawn in by the prologue!!! I’m a big fan of “touch her, and you die” vibes, but I mean, what’s also not to love about a unique Arthurian retelling with gender twists, a treacherous royal court, a dangerous quest, magical Fae & mystical monsters, entwined with a bit of spice! Morgan, Princess of Pendrath and true heir to the throne has spent most of her life dimming her light to feel safe and to make others comfortable. She is treated as an outcast in the court and repressed by her family due to the blood of the Fae within her and forced to join the Temple of the Three as a priestess in training to one day replace Merlin. Her brother, King Arthur, who reminds me of Joffrey from Game of Thrones, later tells her that he has other plans and offers her a choice of the Temple or to marry her off for political gain, unless… that is, she can journey through the great unknown and return with a long-lost fae weapon with enchanted powers known as Excalibur. Her quest begins with a roguish crew that includes the mysterious, arrogant, and heart-tuggingly handsome Captain of the Royal Guard, Kairos Draven, whom she can’t decide if she wants to stab or indulge in pleasure with. Along the way are plenty of surprises, mystical creatures, and betrayal, all while Morgan uncovers more of the truth about herself and who she can trust. This book had intriguing storylines and lovable characters that kept me turning pages and wanting more. I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds and comes together in book 2, Court of Claws, which I just started reading!! Read if you’re into- Dark Fantasy/Romance Slow–Burn Question Everything Magic and Action Fae Arthurian Legend Stabby/Broken FFC Morally Gray MMC Forced Proximity Queen of Roses is perfect for Holly Black, Jennifer L. Armentrout, and Sarah J. Maas fans. Please check the trigger warnings page in the table of contents before reading this book.
