Quality Kentucky field-grown trees from Kentucky grown seed.  Chinese chestnuts (Castanea mollissima) are an easy-to-grow, fast growing and highly productive tree that has many uses. The highly desirable nuts are a rich starchy food that are delicious roasted or made into many dishes, including gluten-free breads. They have the nutrition of brown rice. The fallen nuts attract lots of deer in early-mid fall. Chinese chestnuts are resistant to the blight that decimated the native chestnut population in the early 1900s.  Increasingly these are considered a great candidate for silvopasture and commercial tree crop production. They produce nuts in as little as 2-4 years from planting. Very satisfying and profitable tree to grow. You need at least 2 for cross pollination. Plant each tree about 20-25' apart.  They require very careful transplanting and need mulch and organic fertilizer to thrive. Easy to grow organically. Plant on a warm, sunny site with good water drainage.

CANNOT SHIP TO: Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, California, Florida, Oregon, Michigan, Louisiana, or Washington.

Recommended for ORGANIC GROWING

Uses: Edible nuts, shade, reforestation, deer attractant, cash crop.

Pollination: More than 1 Chinese Chestnut seedling needed for cross-pollination or no nuts will set. Must be planted 20-30ft apart. Bundles include either 2, 5, 10, or 25 trees so cross-pollination is covered

Recommended by 11 year old boy
Format: Hardcover
My son selected this book to read with his school instructional support as a means to mimic a high cap program. My son likes to read books on this topic, which I find a little depressing and a little dark...but listening to the thought provoking conversations that tutor and student had over ZOOM....this is highly recommended. I did not read the book, but both tutor and student enjoyed reading it. They were a little sad to move to another book. The conversations that I overhead did a wonderful job of providing historical references (which I find lacking in his schooling so far), portraying how the characters FELT, what motivated them, and in general connecting my son to a world far bigger than greater than within our Covid quarantined city. Not sure how much of this wonderful learning experience was based on the talent and experience of the tutor, but ALLIES provided content that was educational, emotional and allowed the tutor to delve deeper, connect ideas, draw inferences and start predicting outcomes. She was trying to teach him to immerse himself in the reading....not just reading for a reading log. This was a very successful 'book club' for my son.
