A spectacular climber with a tropical silhouette and rare variegated leaf markings. This variegated form of Philodendron squamiferum combines strikingly lobed leaves with unpredictable patterns of white, cream and light green. A must-have for the serious enthusiast.

Origin

The original species comes from the tropical rainforests of South America, particularly in countries such as Brazil, Colombia and Suriname. This variegated form is the result of a rare genetic mutation that creates irregular variegated parts in the leaves - a trait not found in nature, but carefully preserved in culture.

Characteristics

  • Lobed leaves reminiscent of an oak leaf, but tropically large and leathery.
  • Fine red stems with bristly hairs (squamae) - the trademark of this species.
  • Irregular variegated patterns in white, cream or pale yellow, often asymmetrical and highly variable per leaf.
  • A vigorous climber that does well on a moss stick or vertical support.

Each plant is unique - some specimens show light splashes, while others show broad sectoral variegation.

Care

Light

Plenty of indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the variegated parts. The lighter the stand (without bright sun), the better the variegation is preserved.

Temperature

Feels best at temperatures between 20-28 °C. Do not let the temperature drop below 15 °C at night.

Substrate

Aerated and well-draining. Use a mix of bark, coconut fiber, sphagnum and a little activated charcoal for a balanced water-air ratio.

Humidity

Ideally 60% or higher. Dry air can damage the white parts more quickly. Regular spraying or a humidifier will help maintain healthy leaves.

Nutrition

During the growing season, give a light dose of plant food every 2-3 weeks. Preferably choose a low-nitrogen variety to prevent overgrowth of green leaves.

Watering

Water when the top layer of the substrate feels dry. Preferably use demineralized water to prevent leaf damage. Do not leave water at the bottom of the pot.

Flowering

In room conditions, this species rarely blooms. Its ornamental value lies entirely in its striking foliage and unique structure.

Elephant in Blue
Its so cute but not made for heavy biting. It was ripped up in less than an hr. Very disappointed in quality. I was hoping it would last at least one month. Didn't even get two hrs. This is a puppy toy.

The most destructible toy
Easily destroyed My dog ripped through this thing within 2 minutes. The head popped off with nearly no resistance. The ears, legs and tail followed very quickly after. Seconds later the stuffing was everywhere. Complete waste of money

My little Yorkie loves this donkey!!
Oh my goodness this little donkey is sooooooooo cute! I bought it for my Yorkie as a birthday present and he went bonkers with it! He absolutely loves it! My other two boys wanted it so bad but Frank was not letting it go! LOL It was so funny. He kept a watchful guard on this particular toy! The donkey is actually almost bigger than he is at only 4.9lbs! That doesn't stop him however.. he carries it around with him. The donkey is very well made. It has a cute squeaker inside which he loves. He likes to bite it over and over to make it squeak! LOL It seems to be pretty chew resistant. This toy is a great value for the price! I can't say enough about it and I most highly recommend it! Your babies will love it!
