Aloe microstigma

Aloe microstigma, commonly known as Karoo aloe or small-spotted aloe, is a rosette-forming succulent with blue-green leaves, pale speckling and reddish teeth along the margins. The rosette has a firm upright shape, and the leaves can flush reddish-brown under strong exposure, drought or cooler dry conditions.

Mature plants usually remain solitary or form small groups. Established bright-grown plants can send up tall winter inflorescences with red-orange to yellow tubular flowers held above the foliage.

Aloe microstigma foliage and flowering

  • Growth habit: Rosette-forming succulent, usually solitary or in small groups.
  • Leaf pattern: Blue-green leaves with small pale spots and reddish marginal teeth.
  • Seasonal colour: Leaves can turn reddish-brown during dry, cool or very bright conditions.
  • Flowering: Mature plants can produce tall winter inflorescences with red-orange to yellow tubular flowers.
  • Container shape: Upright rosettes suit bright windowsills, open shelves and warm indoor plant spots.

Aloe microstigma is native from southwestern Namibia into the Cape Provinces of South Africa. In the wild, it grows across dry interior landscapes, including open flats, rocky slopes and bushy sites, where strong drainage, high light and long dry intervals shape its succulent growth.

In containers, the plant needs a mineral-rich substrate, a pot with excellent drainage and the brightest indoor position available. The roots should dry well between waterings, especially in cooler months.

Care for Aloe microstigma

  • Light: Provide very bright light with gentle direct sun where possible. Acclimate gradually before longer outdoor or midday exposure.
  • Watering: Water deeply, then let the substrate dry through most of the pot before watering again.
  • Substrate: Use a gritty succulent mix with pumice, lava, coarse sand or other mineral components for fast drainage.
  • Temperature: Keep warm and frost-free indoors. Active growth is strongest around 18–28 °C.
  • Repotting: Repot when the rosette has outgrown the pot or the substrate has broken down and stays wet too long.

Aloe microstigma condition checks

  • Soft base or translucent leaves: Usually linked to wet substrate, cold roots or weak drainage.
  • Wrinkled, folded leaves: Often appears after extended drought or when roots cannot take up water evenly.
  • Loose, stretched growth: Increase light step by step so the rosette keeps a firmer shape.
  • Scale or mealybugs: Check leaf bases, rosette centres and undersides of older leaves.

Aloe microstigma handling and safety

Keep Aloe microstigma away from pets and small children. Aloe sap can irritate the mouth and digestive system if chewed, and the toothed leaf margins can scratch skin during handling.

Aloe microstigma name background

Aloe microstigma belongs to the Asphodelaceae family. The genus name Aloe is linked to old names for bitter aloe sap. The epithet microstigma means “small spot”, referring to the fine pale spotting on the leaves.

Aloe microstigma brings blue-green spotted rosettes, reddish leaf teeth and winter flowers to a bright, dry indoor succulent setup.

Great quality, color is ok.
Color: Cream Brown, Size: 2 x 6 ft Sheepskin
The quality, texture, feel and smell of the rug is very good. The hairs adhere to the back lining well and don't shed even with my cat trying to bite it out. The only downside unfortunately is aesthetic— the cream brown I ordered, in natural light/sun shining on it, looks more yellowish - gold.

Great Quality!
Color: Ivory White, Size: 2' x 6' (Sheepskin Shape), Color: Ivory White, Size: 2' x 6' (Sheepskin Shape)
I have owned many sheepskins before and this one is by far the best deal. Cheaper than similar sizes, but not in a bad way! It’s a beautiful creamy white, super plush, and is very long. We keep it on the back of our couch and it gives a very cozy vibe. I haven’t had any issues with it shedding. Word of advice for cat owners: When we first got it, it did have a sheepskin smell but it isn’t a gross smell and it went away within a few days; however, my cat was very attracted to that smell and was “attacking” the sheepskin. We trained her not to do it just by spraying her with water—after a few times of that she stopped going anywhere near it. Now that the smell has dissipated, she isn’t attracted to it anymore but does like to sit on it every once and awhile (I can’t blame her, it’s sooooo soft). I saw someone else say their cat ruined their rug, so I wanted to give our story on how we prevented that and hopes it helps another cat owner. You just have to be alert for the first day, maybe even let it off-gas outside first, then keep a spray bottle nearby and the cat should stop messing with it!

Great little rug!
Color: Ivory White, Size: 2' x 3' (Sheepskin Shape), Color: Ivory White, Size: 2' x 3' (Sheepskin Shape)
This nice little sheepskin rug is the perfect finishing touch to my little reading nook. It’s soft and thick. Follow the enclosed instructions to fluff it up. I was going to order a second one but saw that the price jumped nearly $10 in a week. It’s nice but it’s not worth that amount. I’d buy it on sale though. Five stars.
