Amorpha canescens typically grow 1 to 3 feet tall and have a spread of about 2 to 3 feet wide, with slender, woody stems. The stems and leaves are covered in tiny, fine, silvery-gray hairs giving the plant a leaden appearance. The leaves are arranged alternating and are compound pinnate in shape with a gray green epidermis. In early to midsummer, A. canescens produces dense spikes of small, purple flowers with bright orange anthers, giving the plant a beautiful contrast of color that lasts for about 4 weeks. Amorpha canescens has a deep, extensive root system, making it a valuable species for erosion control and prairie restoration projects. It is also used ornamentally in native plant gardens for its attractive flowers and foliage. Amorpha canescens thrives in full sun and is highly drought-tolerant, preferring well-draining, sandy or rocky soils.
