Wintergreen Boxwood - Low Maintenance Evergreen Hedge

Create the perfect formal hedge or foundation planting with year-round elegance. The Wintergreen Boxwood is a dense, compact evergreen shrub prized for its refined appearance and exceptional cold hardiness. This traditional landscape staple has become the go-to choice for homeowners and landscapers seeking classic beauty with minimal upkeep. With its lustrous dark green foliage and naturally compact growth habit, the Wintergreen Boxwood transforms ordinary garden beds into sophisticated outdoor spaces. The small, rounded leaves maintain their rich emerald color through even the harshest winters, creating a polished, timeless look while requiring far less maintenance than most ornamental shrubs. Unlike common boxwoods that can suffer winter damage, these hardy evergreens provide reliable color and structure that actually improves with proper care over time.

Why You'll Love the Wintergreen Boxwood

Classic Formal Beauty: The naturally dense, rounded form reaches 2–4 feet tall and wide at maturity, making this the perfect choice for low hedges, garden borders, and foundation plantings that frame your home with timeless elegance.

Superior Cold Hardiness: Space plants 18–24 inches apart for hedges or 2–3 feet apart for individual specimens, and they quickly establish into a continuous green barrier. These compact evergreens have earned their reputation as one of the most winter-hardy boxwood varieties available, thriving where other cultivars fail.

Exceptional Winter Color: Resistant to the bronzing and browning that plague many boxwoods in cold weather. Once established, the Wintergreen Boxwood maintains its deep green color throughout winter, even in exposed locations with harsh wind and freezing temperatures.

Effortless Maintenance: A low-maintenance landscaping choice due to its slow to moderate growth rate, natural disease resistance, and minimal pruning requirements - perfect for busy homeowners who want beautiful results without constant upkeep.

Wintergreen Boxwood Details

  • Botanical Name: Buxus 'Wintergreen' (Buxus microphylla var. koreana × B. sempervirens)
  • Type: Broadleaf evergreen shrub
  • Mature Size: 2–4 ft tall × 2–4 ft wide
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate — 3–6 inches per year
  • Light: Full sun to partial shade
  • Soil: Well-drained; adaptable to loam, clay, or amended soil
  • Water: Moderate; consistent moisture during establishment
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

Growing Conditions

Soil Adaptability: Wintergreen Boxwood tolerates a wide range of soil types from slightly acidic to slightly alkaline (pH 6.5–7.5). However, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter produces the most vigorous growth, and heavy clay should be amended to prevent root rot.

Light Requirements: Performs best in full sun to partial shade (4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily). For optimal winter color retention and dense growth, plant in locations with morning sun and afternoon shade in hot climates, or full sun in northern regions.

Hardiness: Thrives in USDA zones 4–9, making it suitable for nearly all temperate climates from northern New England through the Mid-Atlantic and into the upper South, withstanding temperatures as low as -30°F.

Care Instructions

Watering: Water deeply once or twice weekly during the first growing season to establish a robust root system. Once established, water during extended dry periods, providing approximately 1 inch of water per week. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges, or lightly shape after the spring flush. Wintergreen Boxwood responds beautifully to formal shearing for hedges or can be left natural for a softer, mounded appearance.

Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for evergreens in early spring (such as 10-10-10 or organic alternatives). A second light feeding in early summer supports continued growth. Avoid late-season fertilization, which can promote tender growth vulnerable to winter damage.

Landscaping Uses

Versatile Applications: Wintergreen Boxwood's versatility makes it suitable for:

  • Formal Hedges & Borders: Create elegant low hedges (18–36 inches tall) that define garden rooms, edge pathways, or frame flower beds with classic structure
  • Foundation Plantings: Anchor your home's architecture with symmetrical foundation groupings that remain attractive year-round
  • Container Gardens: Excellent for patio containers or flanking entryways with formal topiaries
  • Parterres & Knot Gardens: The traditional choice for intricate formal garden designs that showcase geometric patterns
  • Mass Plantings: Use as a low-maintenance groundcover alternative on slopes or in difficult areas

Year-Round Privacy & Structure: Unlike deciduous shrubs that lose their leaves in fall, the Wintergreen Boxwood provides continuous screening and visual interest through all four seasons. Its compact size makes it ideal for smaller properties where taller privacy hedges would be overwhelming, while still creating defined spaces and adding architectural depth to your landscape design.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far apart should I plant Wintergreen Boxwood for a hedge?
For a dense formal hedge, space plants 18–24 inches apart (center to center). For a more natural, informal border or individual accent shrubs, space them 2.5–3 feet apart. Closer spacing creates a fuller hedge more quickly but may require more plants and earlier pruning to maintain air circulation.

How fast does Wintergreen Boxwood grow, and when will my hedge fill in?
Wintergreen Boxwood grows 3–6 inches per year once established. With proper care and spacing of 18–24 inches, you can expect plants to touch and form a continuous hedge within 2–3 years. Growth accelerates with consistent watering, annual fertilization, and adequate sunlight.

Is Wintergreen Boxwood resistant to boxwood blight and winter damage?
Wintergreen Boxwood shows good resistance to winter bronzing and maintains its color better than many common boxwood varieties in cold climates. While no boxwood is completely immune to boxwood blight, proper spacing for air circulation, avoiding overhead watering, and planting in well-drained soil significantly reduce disease risk. The hybrid vigor of this cultivar provides better overall pest and disease resistance compared to English boxwood.

Does Wintergreen Boxwood need special winter protection?
In zones 4–5, applying an anti-desiccant spray in late fall and providing burlap wind screens for exposed plantings helps prevent winter burn. Ensure plants are well-watered going into winter, as winter damage often results from dehydration rather than cold temperatures. In zones 6–9, winter protection is typically unnecessary.

Great Cleaning Power and Super Convenient
Color: White, Size: D20Plus, Color: White, Size: D20Plus
The DREAME D20 Plus Robot Vacuum and Mop works really well in my apartment. The suction is very strong and easily picks up dust and pet hair from both carpets and hard floors. I also like the self-emptying feature with the large dust bag, which saves me a lot of time. The mapping is accurate, and the battery lasts long enough to clean the whole place. Overall, it’s a great robot vacuum for the price.

I am very satisfied with the overall experience!
Color: Black, Size: D20Plus, Color: Black, Size: D20Plus
The suction power is really strong. Daily dust, hair and debris can be easily cleaned up, and the ground is obviously much cleaner. Although there are no pets at home, it is enough for daily cleaning. What I like most is its self-dust collection function. The 5L large dust bag has a large capacity and can be used for a long time without dumping garbage. It is really worry-free. It is very friendly to people who do not want to take care of the machine frequently. The drawing is very fast and accurate, and the cleaning route is orderly and will not collide randomly. The APP is easy to operate, and the appointment and remote control are very convenient. Generally speaking, it is very cost-effective, time-saving and effort-saving, and worth buying.

Good Robot Vacuum
Color: Black, Size: D20Plus, Color: Black, Size: D20Plus
This robot vacuum is really easy to use and very smart. After one cleaning cycle, it can remember the size and layout of the rooms, and it also allows you to choose different rooms for cleaning. It cleans very thoroughly, and when it finishes, it automatically returns to the dock to empty the dust and recharge. It has truly saved me a lot of time and has become a very helpful assistant at home. It also runs fairly quietly, so it does not disturb daily life too much. For people who are busy and do not have much time for housework, it is definitely worth buying.

Incredible robot.
Size: 11S MAX, Size: 11S MAX
I have had this vacuum for nearly a year now, running it on an automatic schedule every single day, and I am so grateful for this product and how it has improved my quality of life. This vacuum and its automatic schedule has meant that I rarely see any dust or dog hair on my floor and I no longer have to take the time to vacuum. The amount of dust this machine collects is unbelievable- the photo I included of the yield is from HALF of a cycle. Flooring/obstacles I use my eufy on hard floor and short carpet and it works wonderfully. It does snag on high pile rugs so I try to put my bathroom mat up when I remember. Eufy does get stuck on things so it took some time to determine what picking up I need to do before it’s “shift.” This has not been a nuisance, it’s more of a good motivation to do a quick cleanup. Durability Also, long hair is a challenge and I do have to cut it out of the brush head about once a week. I also recently replaced the brush head which was a great reset. The side spin brush also broke down over a few months and replacing that REALLY improved the power of the machine. I’ll be replacing it as soon as I notice breakage now. Noise I think it has gotten a bit louder over the year I have owned it. I used to be able to sleep through the noise, now it’s a bit too loud for me especially as it gently bangs against the walls (doesn’t scuff though). Overall, this is a gift and I will never not have one for the rest of my life

BEST ROBOVAC EVER!
Size: 11S MAX
This is BEST Robovac you'll ever own, IMHO. I purchased the first robovac made by a different company when these little things were a completely new concept. This is BEST Robovac you'll ever own, IMHO. I purchased the first robovac made by a different company when these little things were a completely new concept. It was such a surprise as to how good it was, and how it made a difference in time spent housekeeping every day. I've been a fan ever since (20+ yrs) and have tried many different brands and models. The Eufy is the best! And I have purchased 3 of this model. Depending upon your budget and specific needs, there are things I've learned, and I'm going to break those points down for your consideration. Possibly they may apply to your situation. These points are some requirements that make all the difference to me and my lifestyle. ~~> #1. Two auxiliary brushes.: This is the most important thing for me and is a no brainer, IMHO. The two brushes, one on each side of the front edge (approx 11 and 2 o'clock) sweep the debris to the underneath center of the unit where it is sucked up. Because there are two, they sweep a larger area, and because the vac covers the same areas more than once, you get better cleaning results. This is very important in kitchens and high traffic areas. Also corners are swept from both sides. #2. Undercarriage rotating beater brush: I have both carpeted and uncarpeted areas. I need more than just suction to lift dust, pet hair, dirt, and debris from my floors. My kitchen does not have carpet so an undercarriage beater brush is not a requirement, but my Family room has carpeting, and my Living room has Oriental wool and silk rugs. They need a light agitation to help lift up the dust so the vacuum can easily suction it up. A beater brush is a major requirement for my floors for this reason. #3 Scheduling option: this is WONDERFUL! Our major living areas are scheduled to vacuum after we've gone to bed, and our bedrooms and bathrooms are scheduled while we are gone during the day. Happy feet! #4. Rechargeable on its own! Need I say more? It goes back to the recharging station to recharge itself when it needs more juice. YAY! We live on three floors, and this is a huge plus for us. #5. The Customer service with this company is amazing! If you have any issues, regardless of how small, they will get back to you, and immediately help. They respond, and do not merely send you to a FAQ link. #6. It is gentle and does not smack into your furniture, scuffing it. #7. The more you use it, the cleaner your house will be. Regular dusting is done on a daily basis so there is less and less dirt and dust to deal with. It is amazing the difference! Weekend freedom! #8. You do not have to do much prep at all, just check for loose cords to not become tangled. When I bought my first robovac I didn't use it too often because I was unnecessarily moving furniture, rugs, floor lamps, trash cans, etc. Then one day, I left a door open and the robovac sneaked out of the room I'd religated it to. When I returned home, the little vac had done my whole house (single level @ 2000 sq feet) and it was GREAT. I realized that all I needed to do from then on was to let it go do its thing. Lesson learned. My Eufys are my workhorses and I recommend this little gem of a vac if you are considering it. IMHO It will be a good investment. It has been for me, and my family (including cats and dogs).
