Dwarf Papyrus (Cyperus haspan)

Dwarf Papyrus (Cyperus haspan) is an elegant, moisture-loving perennial known for its upright, grass-like stems topped with delicate, umbrella-shaped bracts. This striking ornamental grass thrives in wet conditions, making it an excellent choice for water gardens, pond edges, and rain gardens. Its compact growth habit and lush, airy appearance add texture and movement to any landscape.

Distinctive Features

Dwarf Papyrus produces slender, green stems topped with delicate, radiating bracts that resemble small umbrellas. Unlike its taller relatives, this variety maintains a manageable height of 18-24 inches, making it ideal for small garden spaces and container plantings. Its graceful, swaying foliage adds a serene, tropical feel to aquatic and wetland gardens.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun Exposure: Thrives in full sun to partial shade; best growth occurs with ample sunlight.
  • Soil: Prefers consistently moist, rich, well-draining soil; tolerates standing water.
  • Water: Requires frequent watering; thrives in boggy or submerged conditions.
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 9-11; can be grown as an annual in cooler climates.

Ideal Uses

  • Water Gardens: Thrives in shallow water along the edges of ponds and streams.
  • Containers & Patio Planters: Provides a dramatic, tropical touch in water-retaining pots.
  • Bog Gardens & Rain Gardens: Perfect for wet, low-lying areas in the landscape.
  • Border Plantings: Adds vertical interest and soft texture to garden edges.

Low Maintenance Care

Dwarf Papyrus is an easy-care plant that thrives with minimal attention.

  • Watering: Keep soil consistently wet; do not allow to dry out.
  • Pruning: Remove old or damaged stems to encourage fresh growth.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
  • Winter Care: In colder climates, bring indoors or grow as an annual.
  • Propagation: Easily propagated by division or stem cuttings placed in water.

Why Choose Dwarf Papyrus?

With its unique, architectural form, lush green foliage, and adaptability to wet conditions, Dwarf Papyrus is an excellent addition to any garden.

  • Elegant, Umbrella-Like Foliage: Creates a soft, flowing texture.
  • Perfect for Wet Areas: Thrives in standing water and boggy soil.
  • Low Maintenance: Requires little care once established.
  • Focal Point: Adds height and movement to water features and container gardens.

For gardeners looking to add a distinctive, moisture-loving plant, Dwarf Papyrus (Cyperus haspan) is an outstanding choice.

Permission to Help My Child Find Joy
Format: Hardcover
As a parent starting the college search process, I've really come to appreciate Jeff's insights in his previous books, podcast and newsletter. So pleased to finally have this book at my disposal, and less than a month in, it's already dog-eared and marked up! Like most parents out there, I'm fighting my own internal inertia to align my child's accomplishments against the "metrics" (real or imagined) of admission, and gravitating towards the big names. If you are in that stage, I'll say from personal experience that now is a great time to pick up this book. It's a quick read (for someone who's not a "reader"), and it plants the right questions and data in your head to open your perspective. Its funny, every good parent I know just wants their kid to be happy, to find their joy in life. When it comes down to it, our only equating of big name to their happiness comes a derivation that success brings happiness, and big school brings success. As Jeff suggests, this book doesn't say DON'T seek the big name... It just gives permission to look more broadly, that the same success, and perhaps even greater happiness, can be found elsewhere. Now we just need need to make sure our kids see that too, and they are empowered to seek their joy with our full support. There is still data in here that confirms name schools do convey certain advantages. Whether those advantages align with a child's success and happiness is the question we can chase in this process. I, for one, really appreciate Jeff's efforts to make the case for the broader search and taking the time to do it with excellent, fresh analysis of the data in hand. Maybe this book and others generate the momentum to continuing these unique data streams to break the US News/Naviance overload of the process. Good luck to everyone in a similar boat, and I hope you find this as useful a reference as I did.

Works well
Format: Hardcover
I learned a lot about current college selection process. I still recommend urging your kids to apply for stretch colleges. Don't limit to safe schools. But this book helped me understand the nature of current college student selection process, i feel less crazy re contradictory results.
