Philodendron gigas | Fast EU shipping | Grown with love in the EU | Rare velvet-leaf baby plant
Summary: A true collector’s treasure, Philodendron gigas boasts deep green, velvety leaves with striking copper undertones. This adorable baby (P5, H5 cm) is the perfect start to growing one of the most luxurious aroids for European homes.
✨ Why You'll Love the Philodendron gigas
- Sumptuous, velvety foliage that darkens with age
- Rare and highly sought-after species among collectors
- Compact baby size — ideal for propagation boxes or humid terrariums
- Easy to grow with the right humidity and indirect light
- Develops large, dramatic leaves as it matures and climbs
🌞 Light & Placement
Provide bright, indirect light to enhance leaf texture and colour. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch young leaves. Perfect for plant shelves, glass cabinets, or bright corners in European apartments.
💧 Water & Humidity
Keep soil consistently lightly moist — not soggy. Water when the top 1–2 cm feel dry. This species loves high humidity (70–85%), so it thrives in enclosed spaces or near humidifiers.
🪴 Soil & Potting
Plant in a loose, airy aroid mix with plenty of drainage — a blend of sphagnum moss, perlite, and orchid bark is ideal. As a P5 baby plant, pot it gently into a small nursery pot. Upgrade pot size gradually as roots fill the container. Use our aroid substrate for optimal growth.
🐾 Toxicity & Safety
Like most Philodendrons, Philodendron gigas is toxic if ingested by pets or humans. Keep out of reach of cats, dogs, and small children.
🌱 Growth & Propagation
Fast climber when mature, producing long, velvety leaves with a copper sheen on the underside. Propagate by stem cuttings with at least one node during spring or summer — root easily in moss or water under warm, humid conditions.
📆 Seasonal & Special Care
Feed monthly during the growing season (spring–summer) with a balanced, nitrogen-rich aroid fertilizer. In winter, reduce watering and maintain temperatures above 18 °C. Provide a moss pole once the plant starts vining for best leaf development.
🐛 Common Issues
- Yellow leaves → overwatering or poor drainage
- Brown edges → low humidity or cold drafts
- Watch for thrips or spider mites under leaves in dry air
🧬 Botanical Background
Philodendron gigas originates from the humid rainforests of Panama and is celebrated for its large, velvet-textured foliage. When mature, its leaves can exceed 1 meter in length, making it one of the most majestic Philodendrons to grow indoors across Europe.
