Alocasia brisbanensis - Elephant Ear
Alocasia brisbanensis, commonly known as Native Cunjevoi or Elephant Ear, is a large, tropical perennial with glossy, heart-shaped leaves on long, sturdy stems. Its bold, lush foliage brings a tropical feel to gardens, creating an impressive display. This robust plant can reach heights of 1.5–2 meters, making it ideal for adding height and texture to garden beds or shaded areas.
Position
Alocasia brisbanensis thrives in partial to full shade, making it an excellent choice for shaded garden areas or understory plantings. It prefers warm, humid environments and sheltered spots protected from strong winds, which can damage its large leaves.
Growth
This fast-growing Alocasia variety reaches a mature height of 1.5–2 meters and has a spreading habit with large, arching leaves. It adds a lush, tropical aesthetic to landscapes and is often used as a striking foliage plant in shaded garden beds or tropical-themed gardens.
Planting Guide
Alocasia brisbanensis grows best in well-drained, rich soil that retains moisture. Spacing plants 1–1.5 meters apart to allow for its full spread. Position at soil level, water deeply after planting, and apply a layer of mulch to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
Plant Care
Water regularly, especially in dry periods, to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulch annually to conserve moisture and maintain soil health. Fertilise with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring and midsummer to encourage lush growth. Prune any dead or damaged leaves as needed to maintain its appearance.
