Dwarf Alberta Spruce (Picea glauca 'Conica')

Dwarf Alberta Spruce brings a crisp, evergreen cone shape that makes landscapes look finished in every season. It is an easy way to add structure and order near the home, especially when you want a formal look without constant shaping. The dense green needles hold through winter and provide a clean backdrop for flowers and seasonal color. With steady moisture while it establishes and good drainage long-term, it becomes a reliable, low-fuss accent.

Distinctive Features

This slow-growing white spruce cultivar forms a naturally tight, symmetrical cone with dense branching from top to bottom. The foliage is fine-textured and bright green to medium green, creating a refined look that reads formal even in small spaces. It is grown for its shape and evergreen structure rather than flowers, and cones are not a main feature. Over decades it often reaches about 6 to 10 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide, with the potential to become larger with age in favorable conditions.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun to part shade, with best density and form in full sun.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil is essential, and slightly acidic conditions are preferred.
  • Water: Keep evenly moist during establishment, then provide deep watering during extended dry periods.
  • USDA Zones: Generally reliable in zones 3 to 6.
  • Drainage: Avoid persistently wet sites to reduce stress and support long-term vigor.
  • Airflow: Provide good air circulation to help reduce stress and pest pressure.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use the dense cone shape as a crisp evergreen centerpiece near an entry, along a main walk, or at a bed corner.
  • Foundation Planting: Place where you want year-round structure that stays scaled for windows and walkways.
  • Container Planting: Grow in a large, well-drained container to add evergreen form to patios and courtyards.
  • Formal Accents: Use in pairs or repeating intervals to create clean lines and a more architectural look.
  • Seasonal Decor: Plant where it can serve as a living outdoor holiday tree with a naturally tidy outline.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Water deeply through the first growing season and during drought to prevent stress.
  • Mulching: Apply mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature, keeping mulch off the trunk.
  • Pruning: Prune lightly only to remove dead growth or to correct shape, since the natural form is usually strong.
  • Fertilizing: Feed lightly in early spring only if growth is weak, using a slow-release fertilizer for evergreens.
  • Winter Care: Reduce winter burn risk by watering well in fall and avoiding harsh wind exposure and reflected winter sun.
  • Pest Monitoring: Monitor for spruce spider mites in cool seasons and address early if needles begin to dull or stipple.

Why Choose Dwarf Alberta Spruce?

  • Natural Cone Shape: Delivers a formal, finished look without constant trimming.
  • Year-Round Structure: Dense evergreen growth keeps beds and entrances looking intentional through winter.
  • Compact Scale: Fits smaller landscapes and tight beds while still providing real presence.
  • Design Flexibility: Works in foundations, containers, and formal layouts as a consistent structural element.
  • Deer Tolerance: Often less favored by deer than many broadleaf evergreens, though browsing can still occur.

If you want a compact evergreen that stays neat and adds instant structure, Dwarf Alberta Spruce is a dependable choice. Give it sun, good drainage, and consistent moisture while it establishes, then let its natural form carry the design through every season. It is one of the simplest ways to add lasting order and winter interest near the home.

Fudge!
Format: Kindle
Titles aren’t my strong suit. Sorry not sorry. That ending has me completely frustrated book two isn’t out yet. Just throwing that out there. First thing first, this is a high school book where the lead is under 18. Yea yea she’s about month from being an adult, but I can’t say I would’ve even opened the file if I’d realized. It’s not a smut fest or anything, but there is sexual tension as each party figures out their emotions. That being said, it’s a good book. There are some troubling parts, like how the supes come into their powers at 13, but most of those are dealt with in a way that makes sense. Kian is the exception. His whole arc pisses me off, especially since no one stepped in. Reflecting back on real world situations, ten or so years ago, I can see it happening, but it still makes me sick. Which, I’m sure was the whole damn point. For the most part, Courting Darkness is a fun read. I found myself laughing along with most of the set up. By the time it started getting serious, I’d grown to like the characters enough it held an impact. I’ll be adding book two to my list for when it comes out.

Intriguing
Format: Kindle
An intriguing story that played out slowly while introducing some unique characters. The story became quite fascinating to read as these same characters provided startling revelations to their lives. As their relationships evolve, more drama and mystery is revealed adding to my fascination. I can’t wait to read more.

Outstanding Story!!!!!!!
Format: Kindle
Oh I loved this story. Sera is such an amazing, fun character. She has so much fire inside of herself. She has humor that makes you laugh with her sassy comments. The guys are fantastic. I don’t feel as if we really have gotten to know who and what they are but they are such a mix of fae. The story is extremely well written and developed. It had me pulled in and didn’t let go. There was so much action, drama, and suspense. Then we get to the ending and goodness there is so much going on. This ending was a major cliffhanger and I absolutely can’t wait to see what happens next.

Exceptional
Format: Kindle
I think this an exciting entertaining story different from other fantasy reverse harmen story. I love the 1st book in this series and hope it continues to weave a story of friendship, love and disappointment as well as sadness. The cliffhanger was gripping and held you in suspense that waiting until the next book was released was almost too much. I’m so glad I waited to read this series until the majority of the books were released. Katie May and Quinn Arthur’s are wonderful writers and I’m looking forward to reading more from both of them.

I don’t mind a cliffhanger,
Format: Kindle
but I dropped at least one star because of the obnoxious gloating of the author after the cliffhanger. Seriously - I don’t understand making your readers angry because you’re smug and expecting them to keep reading your books. I was very definitely enjoying the series. Now I have a bad taste in my mouth and mixed feelings about continuing the series.
