Mexican Honeysuckle Uses in Phoenix Landscapes

Shade Garden Star

Mexican Honeysuckle is one of the very few shrubs that produces vibrant flowers in heavy shade. Plant it under trees, along north-facing walls, or in courtyard gardens that get minimal direct sun. It thrives where most other flowering shrubs struggle — making it essential for shady spots in Tempe, Mesa, and Paradise Valley.

Hummingbird & Pollinator Attraction

The bright orange tubular flowers are a magnet for hummingbirds year-round. Plant 3–5 shrubs along a fence line or around a patio seating area for constant hummingbird activity. Pair with Chuparosa, Firecracker Penstemon, and Yellow Bells for a complete hummingbird habitat.

Informal Hedge & Screen

Mexican Honeysuckle's dense, mounding growth habit makes it an excellent informal hedge or privacy screen at 3–4 feet. Plant 3 feet apart for a continuous green screen with orange blooms. It's especially effective along property lines, pool fences, and courtyard walls in Peoria, Glendale, or Goodyear.

Best Time to Plant Mexican Honeysuckle in Phoenix

Fall (October–November) is ideal — warm soil and cool air promote fast root establishment. Spring (February–April) is the second-best window. Mexican Honeysuckle establishes quickly and usually begins blooming within its first season.

How to Plant Mexican Honeysuckle

  1. Dig wide, not deep — 2–3x the root ball width, same depth
  2. Check for caliche — break through any hardpan layer for drainage
  3. Backfill with native soil — a light 20% organic blend is fine
  4. Spacing — 3 ft apart for hedge; 4–5 ft for individual specimens
  5. Water basin — build a 3–4 inch ring to direct water to roots
  6. Mulch — 2–3 inches of bark or gravel mulch to retain moisture

Watering Mexican Honeysuckle in Phoenix

First Year Watering Schedule

  • Weeks 1–2: Every 2–3 days, deep and slow (20–30 min)
  • Month 1–2: Every 3–4 days
  • Month 3–6: Every 5–7 days
  • After Year 1: Every 7–14 days summer; every 2–3 weeks winter

Drip Irrigation

Place one 2 GPH emitter 12–18 inches from the trunk. Mexican Honeysuckle appreciates slightly more water than ultra-xeric natives but is still very drought-tolerant once established.

Does Mexican Honeysuckle bloom in shade?
Yes — it's one of the few shrubs that flowers prolifically in full shade. Blooms may be slightly less dense in deep shade vs. part sun, but it still outperforms nearly every other option for shady spots.

Is Mexican Honeysuckle frost tolerant?
It can handle light frosts down to about 25°F. In unusually cold Phoenix winters, it may lose some foliage but recovers quickly in spring. Established plants are much more frost-hardy than young ones.

Does Mexican Honeysuckle attract hummingbirds?
Absolutely. The tubular orange flowers are a year-round hummingbird favorite — one of the best plants for keeping hummingbirds in your yard through winter when few other plants are blooming.

How big does Mexican Honeysuckle get?
Typically 3–4 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide. It responds well to periodic shaping but looks best when allowed to grow into its natural mounding form.

You May Also Like

  • Yellow Bells — Bright yellow trumpet flowers. Stunning warm-color pairing with Mexican Honeysuckle's orange.
  • Chuparosa — Another tubular orange bloomer for hummingbirds. Great desert native companion.
  • Red Verbena — Low red groundcover to plant in front of Mexican Honeysuckle for layered color.
  • Russian Sage — Cool lavender-blue contrast behind Mexican Honeysuckle's warm orange tones.

How Many Mexican Honeysuckle Do I Need?

With a mature width of 3 to 5 feet, space plants about 3.5 feet on center for a continuous informal hedge or shaded screen. Use the table below to estimate plant counts by run length.

Hedge Run Length Plants Needed (3.5 ft spacing)
10 ft 3 plants
20 ft 6 plants
30 ft 9 plants
40 ft 12 plants
50 ft 15 plants

For a shade-garden mass or hummingbird drift, plant in odd-numbered groups of 3 to 5, spaced 3 to 4 feet apart. As a single accent in a courtyard or against a north wall, give each plant a 4 to 5 foot clear footprint.

Mexican Honeysuckle Season-by-Season in Phoenix

  • Spring (Feb–Apr): Heaviest bloom flush of the year as days warm. Prime second planting window and the best time for a light shaping if needed.
  • Summer (May–Sep): Keeps blooming through extreme heat, including in reflected-heat spots most flowering shrubs cannot take. In deep shade it stays lush and cool. Monsoon humidity (Jul–Sep) often triggers a fresh flush of orange.
  • Fall (Oct–Nov): Prime planting season and a second strong bloom peak as temperatures ease. Roots establish fast in warm fall soil.
  • Winter (Dec–Jan): Stays evergreen and often keeps blooming, feeding hummingbirds when little else flowers. It handles light frost to about 25°F but can drop foliage in a hard Valley freeze. Cover young plants on nights below 28°F; established plants recover quickly in spring.

Plant It With

  • Chuparosa: another tubular orange bloomer that keeps hummingbirds working both plants.
  • Arizona Yellow Bells: bright yellow trumpets for a warm orange-and-gold color pairing.
  • Firecracker Bush: red-orange tubular flowers that extend the hummingbird habitat.
  • Desert Ruellia: cool purple flowers that contrast the warm orange tones in a low border.

Is Mexican Honeysuckle Right for Your Yard?

Mexican Honeysuckle is one of the rare shrubs that thrives in everything from full reflected-heat sun to deep shade, making it ideal for north walls, under-tree beds, and shaded courtyards in caliche soil that drains. Give it room for a 3 to 5 foot spread and it rewards you with near year-round orange color and steady hummingbird traffic. It is not the best fit if you want a crisp, tightly sheared formal hedge or need a plant that takes a hard Valley freeze with zero foliage loss.

Soft...but fluffy and tall
Color: White, Size: Standard (Pack of 2)
I've only had these pillows for about a week. They are a great quality pillow. The cover is soft and seems well made. My only complaint is that they are VERY full pillows. If you're tall with broader shoulders, you'll probably love them. If you're shorter with a smaller frame you will probably feel like your head is too high and your neck at a weird angle (my problem). There seemed to be mixed reviews about softness....I would consider these a nice medium pillow. Soft filling but firm enough that your head doesn't sink to the bed. Definitely NOT a down-like pillow, so if that's what you're looking for, this is not for you.

Soft, fluffy and surprisingly comfortable
Color: White, Size: Queen (Pack of 2), Color: White, Size: Queen (Pack of 2)
I really liked these pillows. I tried to show different things in my photos because I wanted people to see the details: the design, how fluffy they are, and how full and thick they actually look. They are so full that the pillowcase even looks tight once you put it on, which I actually loved because they look luxurious and well-filled. At first glance they look very thick and high, but once you lay down they feel soft and fluffy instead of hard. They adjust comfortably and feel very cozy whether you’re sleeping, relaxing, or even reading before bed. I think they offer a really good balance because they feel supportive without being stiff. Of course, pillow preference is very personal—some people like lower pillows and others like higher ones—but for someone who likes fuller pillows that are still soft and comfortable, these are great. They are spacious, cozy, and feel like a very good purchase overall. I honestly don’t have any complaints so far. Definitely happy with them.

Great quality pillows. Very difficult wrapping.
Color: White, Size: King (Pack of 2)
The Pillows are the real deal. Very fluffy but with good support. I was surprised by the weight of the box they came in, pretty heavy so you know there’s good quality pillows inside. The one negative is that the pillows are packed in very very tight plastic because they come compressed. But the thing is, it’s really a chore to open them. You have to be careful not to cut through the plastic to the material, but the plastic is put on so incredibly tight that it’s even hard to get your finger underneath. But I found a way to open them. Near the top, insert A very flat metal ruler as far in as you could get it. Then cut through the plastic that’s above the metal ruler. That prevents a sharp tool from damaging the pillows. As you get through the plastic above the ruler, keep pushing the ruler further down into the package. Believe me, this simplifies what could be a very difficult unpacking. I am very surprised that the company that makes them does not insert the type of opener that you find on boxes you receive in the mail or even packages that you get from the grocery store where you just pull a tab and that opens the package. These are really good pillows, but you must be very careful about using a sharp object when opening the box and when trying to cut through the plastic. I am a strong man and have the tools needed, a very flat metal ruler, and a box cutter, knife, or razor. Good luck. !!

These hold up very well
Color: White, Size: Standard (Pack of 2)
I have NO luck with pillows. I’ve been in stores & tried them. They seemed ok there. At home, nope. I’ve been getting headaches & neck aches from lousy pillows. I’ll change one, a few nights relief. It doesn’t help that I’m prone to headaches. After reading about different pillows, I settled on these. The reviews were better than so many different ones I was looking at. Including high priced & brand names. I bought the standard size. When I saw, “Customers Usually Keep This”, I kept my fingers crossed. When I received them, I took one out of the package & put my head on it & thought, oh no! This is too hard! I tried it again. Ok….. I slept on it & haven’t had any pains since. It’s soft but firm enough to keep my head from sinking & messing up my neck. I don’t move. No more flipping my pillow over. My head doesn’t go below my neck anymore! This has been 2 months now, but it hasn’t changed at all. I wake up happy, not complaining. No more pains or headaches. This saved me from losing days with a heating pad or an ice pack. The price was excellent for 2 pillows. I can’t believe a blind buy was the answer! These are incredible. Finally, something worked for me.

These pillows are super soft! I love them. I bought them when I caught a bad cold and needed to prop myself up. Worked so great! Definitely give these pillows a try. They're very reasonably priced too.
