    Lycoris has a few common names; Spider Lily, Hurricane Lily and Cluster Amayllis are just a few. Lycoris aurea (Yellow flower) Lycoris radiata (Red flower) comes from the Amaryllidaceae family and originates from China. Lycoris is a bulbous perennial with a clumping habit. These hardy members of the Amaryllis family are dormant during the Summer months and bear their beautiful flowers during Autumn before growing foliage in the cooler months. Flowers are presented on a tall stem with 4 to 5 flowers. The flowers are made of narrow ruffled petals of brilliant golden-yellow or striking red depending on the variety with long whiskery stamens. Flat greyish-green leaves appear after flowering has finished. They like a hot sunny position during the warmer months, and grow best when they are left undisturbed. Shelter from the wind would also be recommend.

  • Benefits of Growing Lycoris

    Lycoris are a good source of low maintenance Autumn and Winter colour. They are fantastic for borders, rockeries or shrubberies. Lycoris can even be kept in pots and containers. The bulbs are best left in the ground to naturalise. If they are left undisturbed, they will produce more flowers. Lycoris make excellent cut flowers. Cut flowers will last up to 3 weeks in water.

  • Where to Plant lycoris

    Lycoris grow best in conditions where the soil drains well, and they will receive plenty of sun. They will survive with 5âââ€? hours of direct sun per day, but more sun encourages prolific flowering. If you notice water puddles 5âââ€? hours after a hard rain, scout out another site or amend the soil with organic material.

  • When to Plant lycoris

    The ideal time to plant Lycoris bulbs is between late summer and early fall. The roots will form in the autumn, with leaves developing in spring and flowers following roughly 6 weeks thereafter.

  • How to Plant lycoris

    For outdoor landscape planting, find a spot with well-drained soil where your Lycoris will receive full sun. Dig holes and plant your bulbs 6âââ€?" apart with their necks above the surface and their pointed tops facing upwards.
    For container planting, locate a vessel large enough to support your plants with adequate drainage holes and fill it with a commercial potting mix that drains well.     Remove the foliage when it turns yellow and withers.
    Withhold water after removing the foliage and allow your Lycoris to rest for a few months before beginning the next growing cycle.

    Amend soil with compost, finely ground bark, or decomposed manure to raise the level 2âââ€?" to improve the drainage.
    Feel free to cut flowers when in bloom for dramatic bouquet additions, as doing so will not hurt your plants.

Is It a bulb ?

The Difference Between Bulbs, Corms, Tubers, Roots,Today, people commonly us the term 'bulb' to refer to any plant that stores its own food underground. When To Plant

In fall, after soil temperatures are below 50ºF/10ºC. These bulbs bloom the following spring and require the cold winter temperatures for development. But let's say winter arrives and your bulbs are still in their bag. Not to worry! Bulbs are pre-programmed to grow so even if you have to plant through snow, plant your bulbs!

How To Plant

Most bulbs thrive in either full or partial sun and in almost any location with good drainage. Avoid planting at the base of hills or under drainage pipes where water collects and will rot the bulbs.

Tips For success

  • A larger grouping of flower bulbs are far more fab than just a few planted here and there. Think clumps of color.
  • Buy the largest bulbs you can find.
  • Note the flowering times. Not all bulbs will bloom at the same time. A little planning will greatly increase the number of months you will enjoy bulb flowers.

Cheap filter and non-ergonomic handle make this mediocre

I think this will get the job done, but the plastic and filter portion of the filter in the middle is really cheap plastic and I can't imagine it holding up very long. I have a different pitcher with a stainless steel filter and it fits nicely, but this one just loosely floats around in the pitcher without being fixed and feels like it wasn't really designed to fit with the pitcher. There is a warning on the box to not use hot liquids which makes me a little concerned about chemicals that may come off into the drink. It is advertised as a cold brew pitcher, so that may not be a concerned, but if you want some hot tea or something and then want to store it in the fridge with the pitcher, you would want to wait for it to cool. The compact size fits well in the fridge, but the handle is awkwardly close to the pitcher body so that if I hold it normally, my knuckles are making contact with it, so it is not comfortable to pour. The lid seems like it would pop off, but, despite being pretty rectangular, it twists off. It seems to hold pretty snugly, but after rinsing it out and starting some cold brew hibiscus tea, I didn't want to try holding it upside down to see how well it holds water. The lid has a little locking mechanism to prevent it from opening that you slide. When it's unlocked and you press down to open it, it stays up until you manually push it back down, so you could consider that either helpful or annoying, depending on your preference. Because the filter inside is so flimsy and doesn't lock in to the pitcher or the lid and the plastic not spring hot liquids, I can't say I recommend this. I think you are better off finding one made with tempered glass and stainless steel. If you don't really care about the filter and just want a plastic pitcher because you have children or are otherwise concerned with a glass one breaking, I think this one could work well for you.

Not Quite As User Friendly As I Hoped, But Does Have A Good, Reliable Seal And Deep Infuser Basket

I really wanted to like this, but it wasn't quite what I had in mind. Perhaps if I was a regular cold brew brewer this would come together better for me. But I got it because I like infused tea and the center strainer in my previous pitcher broke/ wore out. I do drink cold brew coffee occasionally too, since it is easier on my stomach. But I had been buying it prepackaged from the grocery store. So when I came across this, I thought it was a great way to cover 2 things at once. I did find some pros and cons. First, I like the size, it fits in my fridge door well. And the square shape conforms without taking up extra space better than my round pitcher does. I like that it can be put on its side, but I haven't been brave enough to do that yet. And I like that the infuser basket comes down far into the container. Some of the things that were drawbacks for my use are the basket is rather large and takes up a good bit of container space. Granted, it is mesh and water can pass right through it as intended. And smaller would be harder to clean. Maybe it is a mental thing, feeling like it is blocking space, I don't know. Plus it arrived warped already, which makes me question how well it will hold up long term. And I sometimes like putting hot tea into my pitcher and this is labeled no hot water. But then it says it is dishwasher safe (top rack) which gets pretty hot, so I am afraid to actually put it in my dishwasher. And I'm not a fan of handwashing. I like that it came with extra gaskets and seals, but who really keeps up with those things? I put them in my kitchen drawer, the one with all the weird extra things you forget about in it. And I'm sure I'll not know what they go to when the time comes I need them. I haven't made cold brew in it just yet, sticking with fruit tea so far. I realized cold brew requires its own grind and a LOT of it. So it does OK for my use, but not a total homerun. It isn't totally user friendly, especially the lid. But glad to brew up some refreshing cold drinks for summer.

Makes excellent cold brew

I thought I'd be using this in the summer, but a recent heat wave made me want to move away from hot coffee. I put in about a tablespoon of fresh-ground coffee per 8 ounces of water, and then another tablespoon on top of that. The coffee after around 12 hours was a medium-brown but intensely tasty; the next day it was darker and fuller but still very similarly tasty. I was very, very pleased. The mesh of the filter is extremely fine, though I went with a coarser grind so had no concerns about ground leaking through, which none did. The filter is really thin, though, so I need to be very careful when cleaning it out. That's the biggest flaw, actually, though it's not substantial enough to give it only four stars. It's just a bit tricky getting the grounds out any other way than just running water through it and rinsing it out. Otherwise, this lives up to the hopes I had for it. The spout has a very solid positive seal on it, so that's very reassuring. It doesn't take up too much room in the fridge, either, so I'm pleased about its form factor.
