Haworthia truncata 'Seiko' is a selected cultivar of the South African species Haworthia truncata, a plant well known for its unusual truncated leaf ends. The species is native to the Little Karoo region of the Western Cape, where it grows partially buried in gritty soils, often with only the transparent tips of its leaves exposed above the ground. This adaptation allows it to withstand intense sun and arid conditions by minimising water loss.
The cultivar 'Seiko' maintains the characteristic windowed leaf tips of the species but with unique leaf markings and textures that set it apart from the wild form. The leaves are thick, fleshy, and arranged in opposite rows, giving the plant its distinctive fan-like appearance. Its compact growth habit makes it a desirable collector's plant.
Flowers are produced on slender stalks, usually during the warmer months. The blooms are small, tubular, and white, with delicate green or brown striping, though in cultivation the plant is primarily grown for its leaf form rather than its flowers.
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; some morning or late afternoon sun is beneficial.
- Water: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings; reduce watering in winter.
- Media: Requires a very free-draining, gritty succulent mix.
- Temperature: Tolerates a wide range but should be protected from frost; ideal range is 10-28 °C.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted succulent fertiliser during the growing season, approximately once a month.
- Repotting: Repot every few years to refresh the medium and allow space for root growth.
