Anthurium luxurians

Anthurium luxurians is a Colombian species with thick, bullate leaves that become dark, glossy and strongly textured as they mature. Raised areas between the veins give the leaf its puckered surface.

The plant grows from a short, sturdy stem and forms a clustered crown. Its petioles are round in cross-section but ribbed, so they feel subtly ridged below the thick leaves. Mature leaves can hang slightly, showing the darker upper surface and paler underside.

Bullate Colombian foliage

  • Growth: Terrestrial Colombian Anthurium with a short, stout stem.
  • Leaf texture: Thick, leathery leaves with a strongly bullate surface.
  • Leaf shape: Ovate to narrowly ovate leaves with a lobed base.
  • Leaf colour: Glossy dark green upper leaves with paler undersides.
  • Petioles: Round petioles with raised ribs.
  • Pot growth: Slow, steady crown growth with heavier mature leaves.

Keeping the root zone stable

Anthurium luxurians grows terrestrially in wet tropical conditions in Colombia. In a pot, that means an airy substrate that holds light moisture without becoming dense. The thick leaves develop best when the roots stay warm, airy and evenly moist.

This species is naturally slow to size up. Keep light, watering and temperature steady; frequent changes can interrupt new leaf growth.

Anthurium luxurians care

  • Light: Place in bright filtered light. The raised leaf surface benefits from protection against direct midday sun.
  • Watering: Keep the mix lightly and evenly moist, then water again once the upper layer has started to dry.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky Anthurium mix with bark, coco chips or coarse fibre, pumice or perlite, plus a small moisture-holding part.
  • Drainage: Use a pot with open drainage. Let water leave the nursery pot fully after each watering.
  • Humidity: Aim for 60–80% humidity with gentle airflow during new leaf expansion.
  • Temperature: Keep it warm, especially while new leaves are forming; around 20–28 °C suits active growth.
  • Feeding: Feed modestly during active growth. Rinse the mix with low-mineral water if salts build up.
  • Repotting: Move up one pot size when roots fill the container or the mix starts breaking down.
  • Leaf care: Clean mature leaves with a soft damp cloth, supporting the leaf from below.
  • Propagation: Divide mature plants only when there is a clear offset or more than one growth point.
  • Mineral setups: Semi-hydro or mineral-heavy substrates can suit established plants when warmth, oxygen and steady nutrition are maintained.

Common Anthurium luxurians issues

  • Soft yellowing leaves: Check for cold, wet roots or compacted substrate.
  • Crisped new growth: Low humidity, dry air movement or irregular watering can disturb leaf expansion.
  • Brown margins: Review watering rhythm, fertiliser strength, mineral buildup and root health.
  • Water-soaked spots: Leaves kept wet in warm, still air can develop spreading marks.
  • Slow growth: Check light, warmth and roots first. This species is naturally steady rather than fast.

Anthurium luxurians flowers

An established Anthurium luxurians can produce an upright inflorescence with a cream to white spathe and a green spadix that turns yellow as it matures. Pollinated plants may later form red to purple berries.

Handling mature plants

Sap and eaten plant material can irritate the mouth, throat, skin or eyes. Gloves are useful when dividing or cutting Anthurium luxurians, especially if your skin is sensitive.

Name meaning

The genus name Anthurium refers to the spadix. The species name luxurians means luxuriant or abundant, a reference that fits its large textured leaves.

With steady light, warmth and root moisture, Anthurium luxurians produces dark, glossy, bullate leaves.

Appearances Can Be Deceiving. Perfect Size
Color: Gold Triple Huggie
When I opened the package I was shocked at how tiny these appeared and my immediate thought was to return them without even trying them on. That would have been a mistake. I did order them because they were a smaller version of this look and I wanted them to look elegant and sophisticated rather than making a bigger statement. Well, that is exactly what I got. The gold color is very nice and once I decided to put one on, and got it through my chubby earlobe, it was absolutely perfect and the look I was going for. I have larger ear lobes and they still hang down enough for some movement rather than just cupping my earlobe like a true cuff. If you want this style with a more minimalist and elegant look, these are your earrings. I highly recommend them and be sure to try them on before you make a decision.

Tarnish quickly
Color: Gold Triple Huggie, Color: Gold Triple Huggie
Cute just wish they were better quality, they tarnished both on the part inside my ear and not as visibly but also on the outside, def not as shiny. I’ve had them for almost 2 months or so and the inside of my ear is turning green/ black. Like I need to use an alcohol wipe and qtip to clean the ear hole. Ive worn them almost always but I don’t wear them when I wash my hair. I wear them during my only body showers and also have in gym so maybe steam or sweat has added to moisture that tarnished it but I’m disappointed at how quick they tarnished.
