We love the ever-popular rubber plant ficus elastica plant for its simplicity and tropical looks. Picture emerald green, glossy leaves shiny enough for droplets of water to slide off….picture a large, tall houseplant standing proudly in your home, bringing a taste of the lush, wild rainforest to your hallway or your living room….the Rubber Plant has all of this and more.

It’s a classic, it has stood the test of time, remaining very popular over decades, never losing its appeal.  It’s one of our extra-large houseplants.

The Rubber Plant rubber plant ficus Elastica is rewarding to grow and beautiful when mature. As it thrives in areas with full sun to partial shade, it will suit any room in the house, wherever you want to add a dash of the exotic. When growing the Rubber Plant indoors, avoid drafts near large windows or doors.  

It is native to Asia and in the wild can grow up to 60 metres tall with a trunk that can be 2 metres thick! It won’t do this in your home though, its ultimate height will be more like 2 metres in the right conditions.

Our top tip is to train your Ficus tree to be tall and leggy: its unusual shape is beautiful and casts wonderful shadows in summer. The best advice we can give is to neglect your Ficus tree a little - it will grow stronger if you only water it once the top layers of soil are dry: the worst thing you can do is to overwater - as is the case for most of our tropical houseplants.

What temperature does it like?

Your Rubber Tree plant likes it warm, not cold or draughty.

How much should I water?

Wondering how to water a ficus houseplant? It’s easy. Once a week in summer, about every 2 weeks in winter, always wait until the top 2 inches of soil are dry before watering.

Does it need feeding?

Yes, once a month March-August with a liquid feed. Happy Houseplants sell our own vegan, organic plant food.

Is it suitable if you have pets?

This plant can be toxic to pets.
