Wojo's Jem Vinca Vine (Vinca maculata 'Wojo's Jem')

Wojo's Jem Vinca Vine is an easy, trailing groundcover and spiller that brightens shade with clean, variegated foliage. The leaves stay attractive for months, creating a full, finished look in beds, containers, and along edges where you want coverage fast. In spring, violet blooms add a welcome pop of color above the foliage without demanding extra work. Once established, it handles short dry spells well, making it a practical choice for busy gardens.

Distinctive Features

This plant stands out for glossy dark green leaves with a creamy white center that reads bright from a distance and crisp up close. Stems trail and root as they spread, forming a low mat that can drape over walls or weave through plantings. Small violet to purple flowers appear in spring, adding seasonal interest while the foliage remains the main event.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun to part shade, with best foliage quality in part shade and protection from hot afternoon sun.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil is essential, and it performs well in average garden soils that do not stay wet.
  • Water: Water regularly during establishment, then water occasionally once rooted, letting the soil dry slightly between deep soakings.
  • Zones: USDA Zones 7 to 10, and it is often used as a seasonal plant in colder zones.
  • Mature Size: About 3 to 6 inches tall with a spread of about 15 to 18 inches.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use it as a focal point spiller in containers where the bright foliage can cascade and sharpen the whole planting.
  • Groundcover: Plant in masses to form a low, leafy carpet that helps cover soil and reduce weed pressure.
  • Edging: Line paths and bed fronts for a tidy, luminous border that stays low and readable.
  • Wall and Slope Draping: Let it trail over rock walls or spill down gentle slopes for a soft, finished edge.
  • Underplanting: Tuck it beneath open shrubs or small trees where shade makes flowers harder to come by.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Trimming: Shear or pinch back stems as needed to thicken growth and keep the spread within bounds.
  • Watering: Provide deep watering during extended drought, especially in full sun or in containers.
  • Mulching: Mulch lightly to conserve moisture and keep roots cooler during summer heat.
  • Soil Drainage: Avoid soggy sites and improve drainage in heavy soils to reduce crown stress.
  • Cleanup: Remove winter-worn or damaged stems and foliage in early spring to refresh the plant.

Why Choose Wojo's Jem Vinca Vine?

  • Bright Variegation: Cream and green foliage adds contrast that makes mixed plantings look more intentional.
  • Trailing Habit: Stems drape and spread naturally, making it ideal for spillover effects in pots and beds.
  • Spring Flowers: Violet blooms add seasonal color while the foliage carries the display for the long haul.
  • Deer Resistance: It is often avoided by deer, which helps it hold up in pressure areas.
  • Drought Tolerance: Once established, it tolerates dry periods better than many shade groundcovers.

Wojo's Jem Vinca Vine is a simple way to add brightness, coverage, and a clean trailing line in both landscapes and containers. Plant it in well-drained soil, give it steady water early on, and it will settle into a durable, good-looking mat. It is especially useful when you want shade areas to feel finished, not sparse.

Tough and lasts
Bought this toy Sept 2025. This has been my dogs favorite toy. It was hard when we bought it and he didn’t like it at first. Once he started playing with it, it became the toy of choice. It has softened a lot and loves it even more. First thing we greeted with in the morning is Dude with the yellow toy. I’m going to buy another to have if I think it gets too soft.

He loved it
Is it durable? Not at all. Did he love it? While it lasted. Our dog is a monster chewer with toys so I go into every purchase knowing we might get 8 hours out of a toy if we're lucky, depending on visible durability. We don't even buy stuffies anymore because it's just not smart. He loved the squeak while it lasted, it's large so we never have to worry about him choking on it while running/being dumb. If you have a dog that will eat pieces of things as they destroy toys, this is not the toy for them. Ours plucks it apart piece by piece, but leaves the bits near one of us (LUCKILY!). If he didn't, we'd never buy this again. The missing star is just for lack of durability. Even for a rubber toy it felt like it didn't last very long.

I highly recommend and my dog loves it
I have a 80 pound bulldog who destroys everything he gets his mouth on. He loves this toy. He has not been able to destroy it. Not even a bite mark. He has to have this with him at all times (including during zoomies). I highly recommend it

Reed review don’t really recommend
Did not last very long with my larger dog. And honesty it was destroyed in about 15 minutes completely, and when my dog was tearing it apart, the chunks were large enough for my dog to choke on, so I would highly recommend watching your dog with this toy if they decide to chew it and tear it apart, so they don’t choke so this could be a possibly dangerous toy.
