You can start these early in trays about 10 weeks before your last frost in the spring. In pots these need light to germinate so sow on surface and dust thinly with vermiculite or sand. In milder zones (3-6 or 10) you can sow directly in the garden after your last frost in spring. Sow on the surface of your garden soil and very light dust with peat.
These do not like late day heat so here in zone 7 we plant them where they get afternoon shade. They do not like to be planted in soggy conditions so they are best sown in an high area of your garden.
