Create a custom retreat with this modular bench project. If you're a do-it-yourselfer, warm weather means it's time for projects–projects that get those outdoor living areas ready for long afternoons and warm evenings. This versatile planter bench is the perfect place to start.

Filled with plants or flowers, the project creates a lovely retreat wherever you put it. Ideal for a balcony, patio or deck, the modular design guarantees it will be the right size for any space.

Built from redwood (as pictured; any weather-resistant lumber works well), the project features mostly straight cuts for ease of construction. To build, first determine what combination of planter boxes and connecting benches works best for your space (materials lists and cutting schedules are provided for each component). Next, measure, cut out and assemble the boxes and benches separately. Finally, combine the components for a truly custom fit.

The finished planter boxes measure about 21 inches square by 17 inches tall, and the benches are 36 inches long by 15 inches wide.
