Available July 2026 – Email Notification

Small, fringed white flowers with a sweet, spicy scent are densely packed on semi tall, upright spires. ‘White Mignonette’ is a fragrant, hardy annual, adored by pollinators and an easy to grow scented addition for bouquets. We loved her long vase life, her versatility in arrangements, and how she glowed and hummed in the cutting garden.

As a hardy annual, White Mignonette benefits from autumn sowing in temperate climates, where cool conditions support strong growth and earlier spring flowering.

An ancient cottage garden plant, with its hardiness, clean, vanilla, violet-like fragrance which captures the air and the interest added by its delicate and profuse florets and all who visit them, ‘White Mignonette’ is a worthy addition to a cutting garden and mixed border. Easy to grow. Bloomed throughout the late spring and summer. Visually interesting seed pods. Vase life 5-7 days.

This is a plant of lore and legend. According to a French fairy tale, mignonette was so named by a young girl who was bewailing her homely appearance. A fairy appeared in the form of an old woman and asked the girl why she was crying. The girl told her that she longed to be beautiful so everyone would love her, and the fairy replied, “If you will do just as I tell you for one year, your wish will be granted. Go out into the world, and never let an hour pass without doing something to make someone happier, and do not look into a mirror until I come again.” When the fairy disappeared, she left a little mignonette plant in a flowerpot. The girl exclaimed, “Oh! The little darling!” and tended to it carefully. She did as the fairy told her and became so interested in helping people that she didn’t even think to look in a mirror. A year passed quickly, and when the fairy returned, she held up a mirror, saying, “Look.” The girl was amazed when she saw her reflection. Her eyes, once dim with crying, were bright and clear, her cheeks were rosy, and the whole expression of her face was changed. Then, the fairy said to her, “You have filled your heart with such beautiful thoughts and your life with such beautiful deeds that a beautiful soul shines in your face. Your wish is granted, and like the flower I left, you will create a sweet atmosphere about you wherever you go.”

Seed Count: 125 approx.
Germination: Lot # 37566 68% Nov2025

*We have struggled for two seasons to produce a harvest of this seed with high germination rates. We receive requests for it weekly so we have decided to continue to sell it, raising our packet size to 125 seeds (from 100) to compensate for a low (for us)germination rate of 68% on this year's lot. As flower seed for sowing does not have a minimum standard germination rate in Australia, we set our own of 75%.

DIRECT SOW(recommended) - As a hardy annual, White Mignonette benefits from autumn sowing in temperate climates, where cool conditions support strong growth and earlier spring flowering. If you receive continual, heavy winter frosts, sow after threat of frost into garden soil that is of a fine tilth. Prefers light to germinate so gently press into soil. Germination can be quicker if kept at 15C. Responds to increasing daylight.

For abundant blooming, pinch when 15cm high.

TRANSPLANT - White Mignonette is sensitive to root disturbance. If intending to transplant, we have had great results with soil blocks. Sow 6-8 weeks before intended transplant date which should be in late autumn or after threat of frost has passed. Apply vermiculite first then sow 2 seeds per cell- uncovered. Succession plant every 2-4 weeks for continual harvest – although if you intend to not cut it, one sowing will last the summer.

HARVEST/VASE LIFE - Harvest when bottom ⅓ of flowers on a spike open or leave and pick after seed pods mature. Stems are delicate and must be picked with care. Expect a vase life of 5 days for fresh flowers; pods will last 7 days.

A side to Civil Rights
Format: Paperback
A Civil Rights victory through purely peaceful means never seemed completely likely to me and this book is certainly an eye opener and contains information that every US History and US Government teacher should know. Rights are not preserved unless men are willing to stand up to those who seek to oppress. In this case, many black men in the heart of Dixie finally, and near spontaneously banded together and stopped the KKK and forced the local and state governments to finally acknowledge that the natural born rights that John Locke wrote of in the Second Treatise of Government and that the Founders and Framers of our country adopted applied to all men, regardless of race.

"When you're dealing with the wolf,
Format: Paperback
you have to speak the language of the wolf." - Henry Austin, Deacons for Defense This is truly a lost history of the civil rights movement that author Lance Hill has found under the layers upon layers of mainstream narratives which conveniently dictate false truths that - when repeated enough - become larger than life. Following the organized self-defense philosophy espoused by Robert F. Williams in Monroe, N.C., a small group of men in Jonesboro, Louisiana, founded an organization that had great influence in the civil rights movement of the mid-1960s. The success the Deacons had in defeating the KKK and other haters on the streets by standing up, moving forward and staring them down with guns loaded brought a new sense of empowerment in demanding that justice truly be served today. Hill explains how he became aware of the Deacons and then began his quest to research the history. Initially founded to protect civil rights workers, the Deacons' influence in the Deep South grew with a regional organizing campaign in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, along with chapters being founded in several Northern cities. The success and expansion of the program brought interest from the FBI, coverage by an oftentimes adverse media and linkage - oftenetimes quite temporary - with a number of revolutionary organizations. But through the comparatively brief time the Deacons operated - about four years - Hill successfully argues that the organization forced the federal government to aggressively enforce the 1964 Civil Rights Act and was the bridge to the Black Power movement that emerged later in the decade. The Deacons' legacy continues, as former members have strongly stated over the years that the group has never actually gone away. And, as Hill writes, "Finally, there is something inspiring in a story of people who stood up to injustice when everyone around them was afraid. That is a fable that will always serve us well." The Deacons for Defense lives in the souls of those who do their part on a daily basis to bring real justice to this country.

Great history of a politically incorrect civil rights movement
Format: Paperback
This is the true story of African Americans who choose not to turn the other cheek and wait for Martin's Dream to come true. Instead, they take up arms to protect themselves and their children from the present predations of racist, sadistic creeps. Very inspiring. There's a good movie from it, same name, starring Forest Whitaker.

An Obscure Facet of the Civil Rights Movement
Format: Paperback
The Deacons for Defense story has been buried since the mid sixties. The reasons for this loss are many. The Deacons don't fit the stereotype promulgated by the orthodox civil rights leaders and historians, nor does it particularly fit with the "conservative" historian view that anti-black violence largely was confined to a few terrible but soon overcome incidents [overcome with support of the Feds and the Press]. This book shows how pervasive the violence was and how the African-American Community especially the men, were scarred by the violence, and reluctant to join with the non-violent philosophy of the orthodox movement , as it destroyed their sense of manhood. The author does stretch at times to support his themes, especially the class differences between the Deacons and the mainstreamers, but this story is strong and should be better known. One amazing thing, with all of the hoopla about gun control, I'm surprised the NRA doesn't push the Deacon's story, as it does support the notion of an armed citizen being effective in countering an oppressive government. One can only surmise that the NRA supporters are also supporters of the repression in these instances. Ironic [but I digress].

This details what the average citizen may need to do when the local or state law enforcement won't protect your rights and what
Format: Paperback
If you are a second amendment supporter or if you are an African-American who wonders "What does all this second amendment stuff mean to me anyway?", you need to read this book. This doesn't take place in 'ancient' American history when only those on the frontiers needed to keep arms for hunting and protection or for the gentleman walking through 18th or early 19th century America, this is from America, the 1960's. This details what the average citizen may need to do when the local or state law enforcement won't protect your rights and what it is like to live, as a minority, during that type of time (and 'minority' may change as the winds of political strength changes). The movie about the same topic gives you only a taste. Enlarge your mind.
