Introducing the fishbone cactus, known as Selenicereus anthonyanus, which is a fast-growing epiphytic cactus with climbing stems. This cactus is named "fishbone" due to the distinct shape of its foliage, which resembles the skeleton of a fish. The leaves are flat, narrow, and deeply serrated, giving them a fishbone-like appearance.

Apart from its common name, fishbone cactus, Selenicereus anthonyanus is also known by other names such as Ric Rac cactus, Zig zag cactus, and Ric rac  orchid cactus. These names reflect the cactus's unique growth pattern and the zigzag shape of its stems. It can grow up to 4 feet long and 6 inches wide. However, it can be trimmed or pruned to maintain a desired size or shape.

Native to the rainforests of Mexico, specifically the Yucatan Peninsula, the standout feature of the fishbone cactus is its foliage.

The unusual leaf-like branches are dark green and have prominent, wavy ridges that run along the edges.

The serrated edges give the cactus a visually interesting texture.

The leaf-like stems of the fishbone cactus are long, flat, and succulent, giving it a trailing or hanging growth habit.

This makes it a perfect choice for hanging baskets or cascading down from shelves.

The fishbone cactus flowers are typically white or pale yellow and have a lovely, sweet scent. These blooms are large, reaching up to 6 inches in diameter. These ric rac cactus flowers bloom in late spring and early summer, lasting one day and opening in late afternoon and evening, making them ideal for nocturnal plant observers.

Propagation of the fishbone cactus is relatively easy. It can be propagated through stem cuttings. Simply take a healthy stem cutting, allow it to dry for a few days, and then place it in a well-draining potting mix. Keep the potting soil slightly moist until roots develop, and then you can treat it like a mature plant.

Watering Needs

As compared to other cacti, the fishbone cactus prefers a slightly more humid environment. However, it's crucial not to overwater it. Aim to water the cactus when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. This usually translates to watering every 1-2 weeks, but it may vary depending on factors like temperature and humidity.

When watering, it's best to use the "soak and dry" method. Give your fishbone cactus a thorough watering until water drains out via the drainage holes. Allow any excess water to drain away completely, ensuring that the roots are not sitting in standing water. Avoid letting the cactus sit in a water-filled saucer, as this can lead to root rot.

In the spring and summer, during the growing season, the fishbone cactus may require more frequent watering. However, in the dormant period, which is usually fall and winter, it's important to reduce watering and allow the soil to dry out more between waterings.

Light Requirements

When growing indoors, the fishbone cactus prefers bright, indirect light. It thrives in a spot where it receives bright, filtered light throughout the day. Placing it near a window that receives indirect sunlight or using a sheer curtain to diffuse the light can be beneficial. Avoid placing your Selenicereus anthonyanus in direct sunlight, as this can lead to sunburn and damage the plant.

When planted outdoors, it prefers full sun to partial shade for at least 4-6 hours daily. A location that receives morning sun or dappled shade throughout the day is ideal. Too much direct sunlight can cause the leaves to burn or the plant to become stressed. Keep in mind that the trees indifferent regions may have varying levels of sunlight, so it's important to consider your specific climate.

It's important to monitor your fishbone cactus when you move it from indoors to outdoors or vice versa. Sudden changes in light intensity can shock the plant.

If you're transitioning it from indoors to outdoors, gradually introduce it to more direct sunlight over a period of time to allow it to acclimate. Similarly, when moving it indoors from outdoors, gradually reduce the amount of direct sunlight it receives

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The fishbone cactus favors very airy, sandy soil that drains well. Planting them in ordinary soil will result in compacted roots, stunted growth, and most likely root rot. Instead, make or buy a well-draining potting mix, or ideally use our specialized cactus potting mix that contains 5 natural substrates and mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your fishbone cactus to thrive.

The fishbone cactus has relatively low fertilizer needs. During the growing season in the early spring, you can use a balanced (5-10-5), water-soluble NPK fertilizer specifically formulated for cacti. Dilute the fertilizer to half the recommended strength and apply it once a year to encourage blooming.

Be careful not to overfertilize, as this can lead to nutrient burn and damage this ric rac cactus. During the dormant season, which is usually fall and winter, it's best to avoid fertilizing altogether.

Hardiness Zone & More

Native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, the fishbone cacti prefer warm indoor temperatures between 60°F to 80°F. They can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures during the winter months, but it's important to avoid exposing them to temperatures below 50°F, as this can cause damage to the plant.

The fishbone cactus enjoys humid environments with moderate to high humidity levels. Ideally, aim for humidity levels around 40% to 60%. You can increase humidity by placing a tray filled with water near the plant or using a humidifier.

For outdoor cultivation, this fishbone cactus thrives in USDA zones 10-12. The fishbone cactus appreciates moderate to high humidity levels, even when grown outdoors. If you live in a region with naturally high humidity, the plant will likely do well. However, if you live in a drier climate, you can supplement the humidity by misting the plant or placing a tray of water nearby.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the fishbone cactus (Ric rac cactus) is a visually appealing plant with a trailing growth habit, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts. When it comes to fishbone cactus care, it thrives in bright, indirect light, well-draining soil, and adequate humidity. Place it near a window with filtered sunlight, and water it between waterings to prevent root rot. The fishbone cactus prefers average to warm temperatures around 65-80°F but can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures and should be protected from frost. Fertilize the fishbone cactus plant with a balanced (5-10-5), diluted fertilizer during the growing season for healthy growth. Just ok - too thick to apply evenly
Style: SPF 50, Size: 8 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Just ok - very thick, so difficult to apply evenly. I use this for outdoor cycling and it works, but it's so thick that it tends to clump instead of smoothly covering the skin.

Best Moisturizer & Clears ECZEMA FAST! TIPS & BONUS USES
Size: 11 Ounce (Pack of 1)
After wasting money on many supermarket and expensive brands, this is the only one that really works! I don't have eczema, but another friend does, who first told me about this product. I do have dry skin, though, whenever I over wash my hands due to chores, repairs or taking care of family, and the dry indoor heat or coldness of winter weather. My friend with eczema swears by this. She's tried other brands and even prescriptions, which have side effects (steroids thin the skin and is bad for your immunity). When her skin had cracks or is itchy, she applies it, and it heals up within a few days. She uses it also as maintenance daily, to prevent future outbreaks or skin cracking. There's the regular "Aveeno Eczema Therapy" in a tube, but it stings at first if you have any cracks in the skin, which subsides after a few minutes, but it works faster with sealing up cracks. I love this product because it's very rich, but not too greasy. It doesn't sting if you have skin cracks, and is gentler and still works well, but it takes a little bit longer. It's even more effective than the regular "Aveeno Baby Eczema Care" creme in a tube. I prefer jars because there's always some product left in a tube. You can't squeeze out what's left at the bottom, and have to cut the tube apart to get at it. AMAZON HAS THE BEST PRICE, that I've seen online or off. It's also available in the Baby Section only at stores like supermarkets, pharmacies, etc., but this is the lowest price. SUBSCRIBE, and you can save even more. DO NOT BUY ANY GENERICS! They don't work! I've tried buying them, since it looked like they had the same ingredients, and costs less, but they are simply not efficacious. USE WATER TO KEEP MOISTURE IN: Surprisingly enough, it's not the moisturizer per se that keeps your skin hydrated, it's water. For example, think of a grape (full, plump with water, juicy), versus a prune (a dried out grape). Moisturizer provides a physical barrier to keep your skin hydrated. Of course, a moisturizer's ingredients can also make it a superior or inferior product. The Aveeno Eczema line has colloidal oatmeal, which is soothing, and healing to the skin. HOW TO USE WATER WITH MOISTURIZER: Wet the application areas with water first (I run my hands lightly under the tap), so the product will absorb faster (water hydrates when mixed with moisturizer), and it won't be greasy. Your skin will feel non-greasy, and not wet within a few minutes. Use a paper towel or tissues to lightly wipe off the excess, and you can use your hands right away. I find that this method keeps my skin hydrated more effectively and longer. YOU'LL USE LESS CREAM WITH WATER: I use only a tablespoon size, and spread it all over my hands, and along my forearms and elbows. Water thins and spreads out the cream more easily. You can use it on DRY, CRACKED FEET, too. Apply it throughout the day after you wash your hands and before bed, and you'll never get dry skin or eczema outbreaks again! (Per me and my circle of friends). BUY SEVERAL JARS, and scatter around them the house, like the bathrooms, kitchen, work areas, etc. BONUS USES: 1. INSECT BITES: A friend reported that it even works in a pinch to help alleviate bug bites that she's gotten (fleas from animal rescue, mosquitoes, etc). Wash the area or use an alcoholic sanitizer or baby wipes to clean the bite area first. Then spread on Aveeno, if you don't have an antihistamine topical product handy. ALOE VERA GEL FROM THE PLANT also has miraculous healing powers with insect bites, burns, skin rashes, etc. You just cut a small piece at an angle, open it up with scissors along the leaf's seam, and apply the gel. You can wrap a bandage or strip of clean cloth lightly over the area to keep the gel in place, if you want. The cut plant area will close by itself within a day. Aloe vera is sold cheap at supermarkets, nurseries, etc., at under $10. The gel feels cool and soothing to the skin. The plant is superior to any packaged product. DO NOT SCRATCH THE ITCH! IF YOU IGNORE IT, IT'LL DISAPPEAR by itself within a few hours. Trust me, it really works with mosquito bites. I used to itch for days, until I stopped scratching it. Distract yourself by watching tv, reading or using your cell to ignore the itch, and just lightly apply your best anti-itch remedy (DO NOT RUB or you'll stimulate the histamines from the bite). Anytime that you're tempted to scratch, apply your remedy instead. THE BEST THINGS TO STOP ITCHING FAST (In order of effectiveness) are: 1) Anti-histamine topical product 2) Aloe vera gel from the plant (also heals the skin) 3) Aveeno creme (also heals the skin) 4) Alcoholic rub 2. SKIN RASHES: A friend of mine said she was by herself with the baby one day, stuck with no car and husband away, when the diaper creme had run out in the evening. She applied Aveeno several times, and the rash disappeared the next morning. Another friend used Aveeno for a strange rash that showed up on her arm when she accidentally brushed against some plants when hiking, and it disappeared within a few hours. She washed the area first, then applied the cream. Of course, it's best to use a product designed for rashes, especially for babies. And get any mysterious rash checked out by a doctor. Btw, I don't get compensated for any of my reviews. I wanted to give a recommendation for a fantastic moisturizer that I've been using for several years.

Must have for travel - TSA approved size
Size: 1 Ounce (Pack of 1)
As an adult who has dealt with eczema on and off for years, I originally bought Aveeno Baby Eczema Therapy Nighttime Moisturizing Balm for travel, but it has honestly become a staple in my routine. First, the texture is rich and balm-like, yet it does not feel greasy or heavy on the skin. It melts in nicely and creates a protective barrier that actually lasts overnight. I use it on dry patches around my hands, elbows, and sometimes on irritated areas during flare-ups. By morning, the redness and itching feel noticeably calmer. I really appreciate that it contains colloidal oatmeal and ceramide. The oatmeal gives almost instant soothing relief when my skin feels inflamed, and the ceramide helps lock in moisture so my skin does not dry out again within a few hours. It is fragrance-free, which is a must for my sensitive skin. No stinging, no strong scent, and no irritation. Even though it is marketed for babies, it works just as well for adult eczema. The 1 oz travel size is perfect for keeping in a purse or carry-on, especially during colder months when dry air makes everything worse. If you are an adult with mild to moderate eczema or stubborn dry patches, this is absolutely worth trying. It is a small container, but a little goes a long way. I will definitely be repurchasing, and next time I will likely go for the full size.

Really helps soothe baby eczema overnight
Size: 11 Ounce (Pack of 1)
This balm worked very well for my baby’s eczema, especially when used at night. It’s thick and moisturizing but not greasy, and it absorbs nicely into the skin. After a few nights of use, I noticed less redness, dryness, and scratching, and my baby seemed more comfortable sleeping. It’s fragrance-free and gentle, which is very important for sensitive baby skin. A little goes a long way, so the jar lasts a good amount of time. If your baby has dry or eczema-prone skin, this is definitely worth trying.
