Phlebodium aureum 'Blue Star'

Phlebodium aureum 'Blue Star' has cool blue-green fronds with a softly divided, slightly uneven outline. New and mature fronds can vary from gently lobed to more irregularly cut, so the outline changes naturally from frond to frond.

The plant grows from golden-brown creeping rhizomes that sit close to the substrate surface. Those rhizomes need air around the scaly growth points, while the finer roots below prefer steady moisture in a loose, well-drained mix.

Blue-Green Fronds on Phlebodium aureum 'Blue Star'

  • Frond colour: Blue-green to glaucous green fronds with a soft matte surface.
  • Leaf shape: Divided, lobed or irregularly pinnate fronds that vary naturally as the plant develops.
  • Rhizomes: Golden-brown, scaly growth points creep across the substrate surface.
  • Fern detail: Round sori can appear on mature frond undersides as normal reproductive structures.
  • Container growth: Surface rhizomes gradually extend across the pot as new fronds develop.

How Phlebodium aureum 'Blue Star' Grows in a Pot

Phlebodium aureum is an epiphytic fern in the Polypodiaceae family, native from the southeastern United States and the Caribbean through tropical America. Indoors, its creeping rhizomes should stay near the surface so the scaly growth points remain aerated.

A shallow pot gives the rhizome room to travel across the mix. Deep planting can trap moisture around the rhizome and lead to softness, browning or slow decline.

Rhizome-Focused Care for Phlebodium aureum 'Blue Star'

  • Light: Bright filtered light keeps the fronds coloured and firm; harsh direct sun can scorch the soft blue-green surface.
  • Water: Keep the mix lightly and evenly moist, then let excess water drain fully from the pot.
  • Substrate: Use an airy fern or epiphyte-style mix so water reaches the roots and oxygen remains around the rhizome.
  • Pot choice: A wide, shallow pot gives the creeping rhizome room to spread across the surface.
  • Water quality: Soft or low-lime water is gentler on the fronds where tap water is very hard.
  • Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity reduces dry, crispy edges on the thin frond margins.
  • Repotting: Repot when the rhizome reaches the pot edge or the mix collapses and stays wet too long.

Leaf and Rhizome Issues on Phlebodium aureum 'Blue Star'

  • Brown frond edges: Dry substrate, dry air or strong sun can crisp the thin frond margins.
  • Yellowing fronds: Wet, compact mix around the rhizome can stress the roots and older fronds first.
  • Soft rhizomes: Deep planting or stagnant moisture around the surface rhizome can cause rot.
  • Pests: Scale can settle along fronds and stems, especially on stressed indoor plants.
  • Sori confusion: Round dots on mature frond undersides are fern sori, not pests.

Safety for Phlebodium aureum 'Blue Star'

Phlebodium aureum is considered non-toxic to cats, but chewing any houseplant can still irritate the stomach. Keep it away from pets that repeatedly nibble plants.

Botanical Background of Phlebodium aureum 'Blue Star'

The species was first published by Linnaeus as Polypodium aureum in 1753 and later placed in Phlebodium by John Smith in 1841. The genus name Phlebodium is linked with veining, while the species epithet aureum means golden.

Great many outlets but insufficient usb power for most needs
Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong, Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong
I absolutely LOVE how many ports/outlets this extension unit has. It has usb-As, usb-Cs, AC outlets, on/off switch... In that regard, it's perfect. But. If you're looking to charge your phone or laptop, for example, by plugging your charging cord without an adapter, directly into a usb-c or usb-a port, you'll be completely out of luck. When I first got this I plugged in my laptop cord directly into one the usb-c ports while using it. I eventually, fairly quickly I must say, realized that it was as though the laptop wasn't plugged in at all. It even seemed to lose power faster than if it weren't plugged in! And, it was the only thing plugged in at the time. So it might just be me expecting a charge instead of the opposite, but the issue stands. I had to go and find my A/C adapter and charge my laptop the same way I would without this unit, as if I was plugged into the wall. Now I'm sure there are people out here surprised that anyone would be confused by having to use an adapter to charge a phone or laptop while using this unit. My confusion comes from the unit having as many usb-c and usb-a ports as it does. I don't think it's a stretch to assume, as I did, that the point of having so many ports is to actually use them. One reason I haven't rated this lower is that I knew of the ports low voltage and wattage, so I wasn't completely surprised by having to use an adapter, though I WAS surprised by how completely useless the usb ports seem to be. Also, one description picture shows a phone being charged WITHOUT an adapter. And this does charge my phone but only if I'm not using it. It stays at pretty much the same battery level if I'm using it while charging it. So I don't think I'm 100% at fault for being surprised If you will be using the usb ports to charge a small appliance, a groomer, a shaver, a toothbrush? I'm sure this will do well. I don't have any of those so I guess I won't be using the usb ports at all or will use them only if I'm not in a rush to get a fast charge. Once the initial surprise subsided, I'm still glad I got this. It has ELEVEN A/C outlets, a flat plug that can fit just about anywhere and behind any piece of furniture, and I could still charge my phone (thought not my laptop) in a pinch. I think the price at the time of this review is fine for those features. 3.5 stars.

Many Outlets in One Compact Device!
Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong
The number of outlets is impressive for its size, and the USB ports are super convenient for phones, tablets, and other small devices. Everything charges steadily without overheating, and the 5 ft cord gives enough flexibility to place it where I need it. I also really appreciate the compact design. Even with so many plugs available, it doesn’t feel bulky or cluttered. It fits nicely behind furniture and keeps everything organized instead of having a mess of adapters everywhere. It’s especially perfect for older homes or apartments with only a couple of outlets per room. While it’s not a substitute for true grounded outlets for heavy appliances, it works perfectly for everyday electronics. These items are typically fine: Phone chargers Laptops LED lamps Routers / modems TVs (modern, low draw) These devices are double-insulated or low risk, so they don’t rely heavily on grounding. Avoid using this for: Space heaters Air conditioners Microwaves Refrigerators Power tools Anything metal-bodied or high-power Without a real ground, a fault could energize the casing and increase shock risk. Overall, this is a solid, reliable, and incredibly convenient power strip. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone needing more outlets and USB charging in one simple solution for appliances motioned above that are safer to use with relatively better price.

Perfect Sofa-Side Charging Hub
Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong, Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong
I picked this power strip mainly to use next to my sofa, where I usually charge my tablet, phone, and laptop while relaxing in the evening. Having 11 AC outlets and multiple USB ports in one place has made that corner much more organized, and I no longer have chargers scattered everywhere. The layout is well thought out. Larger plugs don't block neighboring outlets, and the flat angled plug fits nicely behind furniture. The 5-foot cord gives enough flexibility to position the strip where it's most convenient. I also like having both USB-A and USB-C ports available for smaller devices. For phones, tablets, earbuds, and similar electronics, the built-in USB ports have been very useful. For my everyday use, charging personal devices and powering small electronics, the unit has performed as expected. The overload protection switch and built-in safety features provide additional peace of mind. Overall, this has been a practical solution for adding more outlets to an older two-prong receptacle while keeping my charging area tidy and easy to access.

Major Safety Red Flag! 3 Prong Outlets, 2 Prong Plug, This Does Not Provide A Grounded Connection!
Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong, Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong
This power strip has a compact design, a convenient outlet layout, and USB ports, so on the surface it looks useful. The patented three-row layout is clever for spacing the outlets, but that only applies to how the outlets are positioned. It does not change how the strip is actually powered or protected. The problem is the safety design. It has 11 three-prong outlets, but the wall plug itself is only two-prong. Without a ground prong, it is not grounded. The two flat prongs are hot and neutral only, so this does not provide the grounded protection that the three-prong outlets appear to suggest. That also makes the surge protection claims highly questionable to me. A real grounded surge protector should have a grounding path for excess surge energy. With only a two-prong plug, I would not trust this to provide the kind of surge protection people generally expect when plugging in electronics or grounded devices. The manual mentions surge protection, ground protection, short-circuit protection, over-current protection, over-voltage protection, over-heat protection, and UL 1363 safety standards, but I could not find any visible UL, ETL, or similar safety certification mark on the unit or paperwork. The only marking I saw was FCC, which is not the same thing as electrical safety certification. Given the two-prong plug and three-prong outlets, those protection claims feel dubious at best and misleading at worst. The USB charging is also underwhelming. The total USB output is listed as 24W, which is not much for today’s devices, especially when that power is shared across multiple ports. We frequently use 35W or higher from a single USB charger, so I would not buy this for fast or modern device charging either. Because of the two-prong plug paired with three-prong outlets, I will absolutely not use this. I do not want a power strip that makes devices appear protected or grounded when they are not. For me, this is not a small design issue. It is a serious safety concern.

Convenient Design but Raises Some Safety Concerns
Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong, Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong
As other reviews have mentioned, this power strip does not provide true grounding protection. It allows devices with three-prong plugs to connect through a two-prong wall outlet, but the strip itself still relies on a two-prong connection. Because of that, I think it’s important to understand the potential safety limitations before using it, especially with higher-powered electronics. It does offer a large number of outlets and USB ports, which is convenient for older homes with limited access to modern plugs. However, considering the price, there are safer and more reliable alternatives available that may be a better long-term choice.
