Bring sunny, warm color to your garden all season long with Sulphur Dwarf Mix Cosmos! These charming, compact cosmos bloom in brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red-orange, creating a vibrant tapestry of warm-toned flowers from summer through frost. Unlike their taller pink and white cousins, these dwarf sulphur cosmos stay compact and bushy while producing an abundance of semi-double and double blooms that bees and butterflies absolutely adore. Growing Your Sulphur Dwarf Mix Cosmos:

Planting Instructions:

  • Direct sow seeds outdoors after last frost date
  • Or start indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost
  • Plant in full sun (6+ hours daily)
  • Press seeds lightly into soil surface
  • Barely cover with 1/8 inch soil (needs light to germinate)
  • Keep soil moist until germination
  • Germination time: 7-10 days
  • Thin seedlings to 8-12 inches apart for best results

Best Growing Conditions:

  • Full sun required (6-8+ hours daily)
  • Well-drained soil essential
  • Prefers poor to average soil fertility
  • Avoid rich soil or heavy fertilizing (causes leafy growth, fewer blooms)
  • Drought-tolerant once established
  • Heat-tolerant and thrives in hot summers
  • USDA hardiness zones 2-11 (annual)

Bloom Time & Duration:

  • First blooms appear 60-70 days from sowing
  • Blooms continuously from mid-summer through frost
  • Peak bloom period: late summer and fall

  • Last flowers often survive light frosts

Care & Maintenance:

Minimal Care Required:

  • Water regularly until established (first 4-6 weeks)
  • Once established, water only during severe drought
  • No fertilizing needed (reduces blooms)
  • Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowering
  • Self-sows if allowed to go to seed at end of season
  • Very low-maintenance plant

Deadheading Tips:

  • Deadhead regularly for continuous blooms
  • Pinch or cut off faded flowers just below bloom
  • Encourages plants to produce more buds
  • Can let some flowers go to seed for self-sowing
  • Plants will still bloom without deadheading, just less profusely

Cutting Garden Favorite:

  • Makes excellent cut flowers
  • Lasts 5-7 days in a vase
  • Cut in morning when blooms are fully open
  • Strip lower foliage before placing in water
  • Re-cut stems every few days for longer vase life

  • Free flowers year after year with minimal effort
  • Can collect seeds to share with friends

What to Expect First Year:

  • Quick germination (7-10 days)
  • Rapid growth to flowering (60-70 days from seed)
  • Abundant blooms from mid-summer through frost
  • Compact, bushy plants that don't require staking
  • Heavy pollinator activity
  • Self-seeds for next year if allowed

Common Questions:

Q: Why are my cosmos growing tall and leggy instead of compact? A: Too much fertilizer or shade. These thrive in full sun with poor to average soil. Stop fertilizing and ensure they're getting 6+ hours of direct sun.

Q: Can I grow cosmos in containers? A: Absolutely! The dwarf habit makes them perfect for pots. Use a 10-12 inch deep container with drainage holes.

Q: Are sulphur cosmos different from regular cosmos? A: Yes! Sulphur cosmos (Cosmos sulphureus) have warm yellow/orange/red colors and are more compact and heat-tolerant than the taller pink/white varieties (Cosmos bipinnatus).

Q: Will cosmos survive frost? A: Cosmos are annuals and will be killed by hard frost, but often survive light frosts and continue blooming well into fall.

Drought & Heat Tolerance:

  • Excellent choice for hot, dry climates
  • Thrives in full sun and heat
  • Drought-tolerant once established
  • Perfect for xeriscaping
  • Reduces water usage in gardens
  • Performs better in heat than pink/white cosmos varieties

Wildlife Benefits:

  • Attracts butterflies (especially late-season monarchs)
  • Provides nectar for bees throughout the season
  • Attracts beneficial insects like ladybugs and lacewings
  • Seed heads provide food for finches and other songbirds
  • Low-maintenance pollinator support

Good fit and nice sharp holesaw included
The hole made by the included holesaw was the perfect size for the insert. They work well and cosmetically look much better than a raw hole in the wood. I tried the cable wrap and inserter and both make the job of wrapping and securing the cables much easier. Overall a good product and a good value.

Great for small projects. Nice fit.
I purchased this set while building a couple of end tables. They fit like a glove and it's really nice that they come with the hole saw bit. It's a great set for what you get.

Includes everything you need and a bonus to get the cord wrap
I bought this to route the cords up to the monitor on a height-adjustable desk. The top of the desk is an inch thick, and this was easy to drill through. To make sure I got a clean cut and did not damage the top, I put painters' tape on the area where I wanted to cut and drilled a small starter hole to get it exactly in the right spot. It cut a really clean hole from the top, and the plastic insert fit perfectly. Once I got the hole cut and the wires run where I wanted them, I put the cord wrap on. The tool that comes with the cord wrap is really slick and super easy to use. I was able to bundle together three cords that hang off the side of the desk. Given that the desk is adjustable, it was a nice bonus to get the cord manager with the kit, as it keeps the cords from getting hung up in the desk when adjusting it. I'm very happy with the purchase, great price.
