Mint Julep Chinese Juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'Monlep')

Mint Julep Chinese Juniper, Juniperus chinensis 'Monlep', is a broad, arching evergreen shrub valued for its rich mint green foliage, durable nature, and easygoing shape that works in both traditional and modern landscapes. Long, sweeping branches radiate out from the center and gently arch downward, creating a full, cascading mound that softens foundations, walls, and slopes. The clean green color holds through the seasons, giving you a dependable evergreen backdrop and a ready made focal point in sunny, well drained sites.

Distinctive Features

Mint Julep Chinese Juniper typically matures around 3 to 5 feet tall and 5 to 7 feet wide, forming a broad, fountain like outline that spreads wider than it is high. Dense sprays of fine textured foliage cover the branches from the base to the tips, so the plant reads as a solid, well filled mass rather than a leggy shrub. The foliage is a clear medium green with a fresh, minty cast, and the layered branching gives the shrub depth and dimension in the landscape. Its combination of size, texture, and easy natural form makes it a versatile choice where you want coverage, structure, and a subtle focal point without constant clipping.

Growing Conditions

  • Light: Prefers full sun for best density and color; light shade is tolerated but can lead to a looser habit and thinner foliage.
  • Soil: Thrives in average, well drained soils and adapts to sandy or rocky ground; avoid locations where water stands or soil stays consistently wet.
  • Water: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish deep roots, then provide only occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
  • Hardiness: Well suited to typical juniper growing regions when planted in full sun and good drainage.
  • Size: Broad, arching habit generally 3 to 5 feet tall and 5 to 7 feet wide at maturity.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate grower that fills in steadily to create a substantial evergreen mass over several seasons.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point Shrub: Use as a low to mid sized focal point in island beds, near entries, or at the corner of patios where its arching form and mint green foliage draw the eye.
  • Foundation Plantings: Excellent along foundations, in front of taller evergreens, and beneath windows where you need evergreen coverage without excessive height.
  • Slopes and Banks: Spreading habit and fibrous roots help cover and stabilize sunny slopes and berms while reducing erosion and eliminating the need for mowing.
  • Mixed Borders: Pair with upright conifers, flowering shrubs, and perennials to build layered structure, using Mint Julep as the broad evergreen anchor in the middle or front of the border.
  • Mass Plantings: Plant in groups or sweeping drifts to create a cohesive evergreen layer that ties large beds together and looks finished year round.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: After establishment, water deeply but infrequently, allowing the top of the soil to dry slightly between waterings to encourage strong, drought tolerant roots.
  • Pruning: Requires minimal pruning; lightly shear or selectively tip prune in late winter or early spring to keep plants within bounds or maintain clearance from walks and drives.
  • Fertilizing: In average garden soils, a light application of a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring is usually sufficient if growth appears thin.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2 to 3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone, keeping it a few inches away from the stems, to conserve moisture, moderate soil temperature, and suppress weeds while maintaining good drainage.
  • Protection: Choose a sunny, open site with good air circulation and avoid low spots where water may collect around the roots.

Why Choose Mint Julep Chinese Juniper?

  • Dependable Evergreen Color: Clean mint green foliage provides a consistent backdrop and structure in every season.
  • Broad, Arching Habit: Fountain like form softens hard edges, walls, and foundations while providing substantial coverage.
  • Tough and Adaptable: Handles full sun, lean soils, and periods of drought once established, with modest care needs.
  • Low Maintenance: Holds its natural shape with only occasional pruning and has relatively low water and fertilizer requirements.
  • Design Versatility: Works as a single specimen, in mixed borders, or in mass plantings wherever you need a mid sized evergreen that offers structure, coverage, and a subtle focal point in the landscape.

With its arching habit, fresh green foliage, and rugged, easy care nature, Mint Julep Chinese Juniper is a reliable choice when you want an evergreen shrub that provides coverage, structure, and lasting visual interest in sunny, well drained gardens.

Fuzzballs get wearing once
Color: Black, Size: X-Large
Very smart to wear, but the quality is terrible so after one wash the collar start fraying and fuzzballs start forming. Very disappointing.

Almost the perfect watch
Color: Black/Blue
I have owned three earlier models of these things going back to the days when I actually ran road races. They are brilliant pieces of work. My only complaint of them was that the start/stop/split button(s)--there were two on the older models--were too small. Well, apparently Timex listens and the two small buttons are now combined into one larger one. Probably this was done years ago but I'm only now getting back into road work, so now I get to discover it. The perfect watch? Almost. I especially like this model as my eyes are not what they used to be and the oversized face makes it easier to read. The downside to this is that it also makes the crystal easier to scratch. That's always been an issue, but I can live with it. No, the real problem with this product is, was, and apparently ever shall be, the band. Now, it could be worse, it could be a resin band (like the old ones) that will crack and break within a couple of years, but no, this is a nylon and velcro wrap style which should be just dandy, but for three glitches: 1. it's too short 2. it's too narrow (gee whiz, Timex designers, it's an oversized watch, why not a matching oversized band?) and 3. it's still resin where it attaches to the actual watch. Now, I imagine it's probably less prone to breakage in how it's implemented, but if you should choose to replace it, I can see no obvious way of removing it short of cutting it off. Really? But these are minor complaints. I doubt it would be comfortable on anyone whose wrists are much bigger than my own, but replacement bands are everywhere, and this watch will keep time with style and it's brilliant at splits. Heck, it even functions admirably as a backup for my expensive stopwatches at our regular short track stock car events. For my money (and did I mention the price is wonderful?) the Ironman is still the best at what it does, and for what it can do.

Good hard use watch.
Color: Black/Silver-Tone
Review Calibration: 3 stars means it works as advertised, nothing special during use, and no amazing features. Higher stars mean better-than-expected performance and features. This is 5 stars because it is my favorite work/hard-use watch. I have been wearing one for years, and like all Timex watches, it can take a beating. I have to replace it when the band's ears get so damaged that they won't hold the band on. This has more to do with the plastic's lifespan than with a design issue. I am hard on watches. This watch normally lasts ne 7-10 years between replacements.

Typical Ironman quality
Color: Black/Silver-Tone
This is my fourth Timex Ironman watch. I own many watches, and prefer the Ironman for casual wear and sporting activities as well as swimming and snorkeling. I decided to replace an earlier model with this one rather than pay to change the battery. The Ironman has changed very little over the years since its introduction in the '80s, with the exception of cosmetic improvememnts and a larger display. I selected the "oversize" model as I was looking for a little more heft to this model. This watch fits the bill, not as chunky as my G-Shock. A pleasant surprise was the weight of the watch. This model is lightweight, another advantage over the G. It's larger than the typical Ironman model, but about the same weight. The band lacks the stiffness of some other Timex and Casio models, and is quite comfortable. Typical Ironman functions are unchanged, and the ability to "hide" various functions makes operation of the watch more efficient. There are three time zones, useful when traveling, as well as the usual chronograph/timer and alarm functions. I haven't worn the watch in the pool or ocean yet, but if experience is any guide, I expect no problems. I've never had an Ironman leak, whether during water sports or snorkeling. These are great watches for the money. I prefer 200 meter water resistance for this type of watch, but Timex has yet to build an Ironman 200m that doesn't overwhelm my wrist in weight and size. I'm not a big guy, and they are simply too large for my wrist. Looking forward to years of service with this watch. Definitely a good timepiece for the price.
