Anthurium papillilaminum × 'Dark Phoenix'

Anthurium papillilaminum × 'Dark Phoenix' is a cultivated velvet Anthurium hybrid with dark foliage, a matte leaf surface and strong vein contrast. It combines Anthurium papillilaminum with the cultivated 'Dark Phoenix' line, giving the plant a saturated dark-leaf character and an elongated heart-shaped outline.

The plant grows from a central crown and produces leaves that can open with bronze, reddish or deep green tones before maturing darker. The blades are soft-looking, saturated and clearly veined, with slight variation in colour depth and outline from leaf to leaf.

Anthurium papillilaminum × 'Dark Phoenix' leaf features

  • Dark velvet foliage with a matte, light-absorbing surface
  • Heart-shaped to slightly elongated leaves with defined basal lobes
  • Visible venation that contrasts against the darker blade
  • Compact crown growth for warm, humid indoor cultivation
  • Stable humidity, warmth and filtered light for smoother new leaves

Hybrid background and mature shape

Anthurium papillilaminum is an accepted species from Panama with dark, velvety cordate foliage. Anthurium papillilaminum × 'Dark Phoenix' adds a saturated dark-leaf line to that background, with individual plants varying in leaf length, colour depth and vein brightness as they mature.

Indoor inflorescences follow the typical Anthurium spathe-and-spadix structure, but the mature plant is defined by elongated heart-shaped foliage, dark velvet texture and pale venation. Young plants may show narrower leaves at first; fuller blades develop as the crown and root system establish.

Care routine for Anthurium papillilaminum × 'Dark Phoenix'

  • Light: Place in bright filtered light. Strong direct sun can scorch dark velvet foliage, and low-light positions slow growth and reduce leaf size.
  • Watering: Keep the mix evenly moist but airy. Water thoroughly, then let the upper layer begin to dry before the next watering.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky Anthurium mix with bark, coco chips, perlite or pumice and a fine moisture-holding fraction. The roots should grip through the mix easily.
  • Humidity: Aim for stable moderate to high humidity, especially during leaf emergence. Dry air can leave new leaves creased, torn or stuck.
  • Temperature: Keep warm at around 20–28 °C. Protect from cold windowsills and sudden night drops.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth. A weak complete fertiliser at regular intervals keeps new leaves steady while keeping the root zone balanced.
  • Pot choice: Use a breathable, well-draining pot setup. The crown should sit above the substrate surface with airflow around the base.
  • Propagation: Propagation is usually by division or cutting once the plant has enough stem and roots. Small divisions need warmth and humidity while recovering.

Troubleshooting Anthurium papillilaminum × 'Dark Phoenix'

  • New leaf stuck in the sheath: Check humidity, airflow and root moisture. Increase stability around the crown while the leaf expands.
  • Patchy brown marks: Look for sun contact, mechanical bruising or cold damage, especially on soft new leaves.
  • Smaller new foliage: Review light, root health and feeding. Reduced leaf size often follows a period of weak roots or low energy.
  • Pest distortion: Inspect new growth for thrips or mites if leaves emerge twisted, scarred or unevenly marked.

Leaf quality notes

Dark velvet Anthurium leaves mark easily. Steady watering, gentle feeding, active airflow and a fixed bright position reduce creasing, tearing and dull surface marks on new growth.

Anthurium papillilaminum × 'Dark Phoenix' safety notes

Anthurium papillilaminum × 'Dark Phoenix' should be kept away from pets and children that may chew or ingest plant material. Anthurium plants contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth, lips and digestive tract. Keep the plant away from pets and children, and wash hands after handling cut or damaged tissue.

Botanical name notes

Anthurium belongs to the Araceae family. The genus name comes from Greek words meaning “flower” and “tail”, referring to the spadix. Anthurium papillilaminum is the species named in this hybrid, while 'Dark Phoenix' names the cultivated line in the cross.

Anthurium papillilaminum × 'Dark Phoenix' carries saturated dark foliage, clear venation and compact crown growth.

Good finish, poor hardware.
Set screws are poor quality and are sometimes powdercoated on the exposed threads. Leads to striped hex sockets and inability to tighten properly. Durable finish as evidenced by no visible damage after throwing parts across the shop in frustration. Ended up running self tapping screws thru parts to complete assembly.
