Mentha x piperita 'Chocolate'

The Grower's Exchange is excited to offer the chocolate mint plant, a delightful herb that has become a favorite among gardeners and culinary enthusiasts. Whether you want to add some unique flavor to your dishes or enhance your garden, our chocolate mint plants are perfect for you.

A Brief History of Chocolate Mint

Chocolate mint (Mentha x piperita 'Chocolate') is a hybrid mint known for its distinct aroma and taste. This variety crosses spearmint and peppermint, resulting in a unique blend of flavors. Its name comes from the rich chocolate scent that permeates its leaves, making it a popular choice for those who enjoy the combination of mint and chocolate.

Historically, mint has been used for thousands of years for its medicinal and culinary properties. The ancient Egyptians prized mint for its healing qualities, while the Romans used it to flavor wine and dishes. Over time, chocolate mint has gained popularity, especially in desserts, teas, and cocktails.

Qualities and Traits of Chocolate Mint

The chocolate mint plant is a perennial herb with vibrant green leaves and a subtle brown tint. Its leaves are oval-shaped, with a slightly serrated edge and a soft, velvety texture. When crushed, they release a wonderful aroma reminiscent of chocolate and mint. The plant typically grows to a height of 12 to 24 inches and produces small, purple or pink flowers in the summer, which attract pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Chocolate mint is not only prized for its delightful flavor but also for its numerous culinary uses. It can be used in various recipes, including:

  • Desserts: Enhance the taste of brownies, cookies and ice creams with fresh chocolate mint leaves.

  • Beverages: Infuse chocolate mint into hot or iced teas, cocktails and smoothies for a refreshing twist.

  • Savory Dishes: Chocolate mint adds a unique flavor to salads, marinades and meat garnishes.

Chocolate Mint Plant Care

Growing chocolate mint is relatively easy, making it an excellent choice for novice and experienced gardeners. Here are some essential tips on chocolate mint plant care to ensure your plants thrive:

Choosing the Right Location

Chocolate mint prefers partial to full sunlight. While it can tolerate some shade, it grows best when exposed to at least six hours of sunlight per day. Choose a location in your garden or on your patio where it can receive adequate light.

Soil Requirements

This herb thrives in well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. A mix of potting soil and compost is ideal for promoting healthy growth. The pH level should be slightly acidic to neutral (around 6.0 to 7.0).

Watering

Regular watering is crucial for the health of your chocolate mint plants. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water your plants thoroughly when the top inch of soil is dry to the touch. Do not let the soil dry out entirely, as this can put the plant under stress.

Fertilization

While chocolate mint thrives in nutrient-rich soil, applying a balanced fertilizer every four to six weeks during the growing season can promote lush growth. Be cautious not to over-fertilize, as this can lead to excessive leaf growth with less flavor.

Pruning and Harvesting

Regular pruning helps maintain the shape and health of the chocolate mint plant. Pinch back the tips of the stems to encourage bushier growth and prevent the plant from becoming leggy. You can start harvesting leaves once the plant is established, typically after a few months of growth. Always remove leaves from the top to promote new growth from the base.

Pests and Diseases

Chocolate mint is generally resistant to pests but can occasionally attract aphids or spider mites. Look for any signs of infestation and treat them promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Proper air circulation around the plants will help prevent fungal diseases.

Overwintering

In colder climates, chocolate mint can be grown in pots and brought indoors during winter. If planted in the garden, consider covering the plants with mulch to protect them from frost. The plant may die back in winter but will return in spring.

Short-lived but much enjoyed as a chew toy
Color: Consuela the Cactus - Large, Size: Large Dog
I bought two of these for my "granddogs" in the size for Large dogs. The German Shepherd-mix stole the one intended for the border collie-mix and had both toys halfway destroyed within a day--I'm pretty sure they didn't survive much longer after that. Much enjoyed! Maybe I should've bought the Extra Large size, because the Large barely fit in her mouth and she wanted to play tug-of-war, so there wasn't much for me to grab onto. Then the border collie wanted in on the action (she's older, so she needed help tugging!) but there wasn't enough material for her to grab onto without accidentally sinking her teeth into me instead.

Love all the Barkbox toys
Color: Christmas Consuela, Size: Large Dog
This is our third "Consuela"! Our dogs LOVE these toys, and they are the most durable we can find for our heavy chewers. They really like the ball inside as well. Highly, highly recommend these toys. I won't be buying other toys anymore, just barkbox.

My dog is a toy destroyer
Color: Consuela the Cactus - Large, Size: Large Dog, Color: Consuela the Cactus - Large, Size: Large Dog
I’ve had a hard time trying to find toys that my dog, Zara loves because she’s actually very picky. Ive gotten plenty of Kong toys that are well known to be indestructible but she wants nothing to do with them. Then I got her ropes and that seemed to be good for a while until she was getting sick in the middle of the night from eating all of the string. Stuffed toys aren’t good because she’ll rip them within seconds and eat all of the stuffing. I felt like I’ll never score the perfect toy for her. I found the three layered cactus toy and decided to give it a go. It’s clearly designed to be ripped and destroyed to get the ball in the middle which is actually really cute and fun to see all of the layers. The cactus arms have stuffing and of course that’s the first thing she went for and ate. I had to watch her and make sure I took the stuffing away before she ate it. And before I knew it, she ate half of the first layer fabric lol once she got through the first layer, all she’s been doing is walking around the house with the toy in her mouth. But now she’s tired and passed out on the couch from all of the fun. This toy won’t last long with a toy destroyer but it sure does give them something to do and it’s a cute toy. I do recommend!!

My Dogs' Absolute Favorite Chew: Tough, Flavorful, and a Lifesaver for Boredom!
What sets the Benebone Wishbone apart isn't just its durability—though that's impressive enough—it's the thoughtful design that caters to how dogs actually play and chew. Crafted from super-tough nylon infused with real bacon flavor (not some artificial nonsense that fades after one gnaw), this wishbone-shaped toy is ergonomically curved for easy gripping with paws or mouth, making it perfect for aggressive chewers who like to toss, carry, and battle it around. The three prongs give them multiple angles to attack, which keeps them engaged for hours without getting bored. For my Goldendoodles and Golden Retriever, who are all large-breed goofballs with endless energy, the large size (about 7.5 inches long) is spot-on—not too big to intimidate, but substantial enough to withstand their enthusiastic chomping. We've had ours for over two months now, and while it's showing some honorable battle scars (tiny grooves from their teeth, which actually make it easier for them to grip), it's nowhere near splintering or breaking. Compare that to the Nylabones we've tried, which either splintered too quickly or lacked any real appeal—these Benebones win hands down every time.Flavor is where this toy really shines, though. That real bacon infusion isn't just a gimmick; it's embedded throughout the nylon, so even as they chew deeper, the savory scent and taste keep coming. The more food-motivated Goldendoodle goes absolutely feral for it—drool flying as he parades it around the living room like a trophy, grumbling possessively if the others get too close. The female Goldendoodle prefers a more playful approach, flinging it across the room before pouncing back in for wrestling matches that leave her curls even more disheveled, while the Golden Retriever settles on the rug for long, focused sessions that help him unwind after fetch marathons. It's hilarious to watch them "fight" over it (in the gentlest, most sibling-rivalry way), but what's even better is how it redirects their energy. No more shredded couch cushions or nipped at ankles during zoomies—these bones have cut down on destructive behavior by at least 80%, giving me more time to relax and less time playing fetch with toy remnants.Safety and quality are top-notch too, which is crucial when you're dealing with heavy chewers. Made in the USA with non-toxic materials, it's free from BPA, phthalates, and all that sketchy stuff you worry about with imported plastics. The company even encourages responsible use: supervise play, especially for puppies or super-aggressive types, and replace when the ends wear down (though ours are still going strong). At this price point for a toy that lasts weeks instead of days, it's an absolute steal—I've already ordered backups in peanut butter flavor to rotate in and keep things fresh. If your dogs are anything like mine—energetic, mouthy, and in constant need of occupation—this Benebone Wishbone will be a game-changer. It's not just a chew toy; it's a boredom buster, a dental helper (those ridges get the tartar going), and a source of pure joy for your furry family members. My dogs love these bones more than their walks some days, and that's saying something! Five stars all the way—highly recommend grabbing one (or three) before your next Amazon order. Your sanity (and your furniture) will thank you.
