Tangerine Beauty Cross Vine Uses in Phoenix Landscapes

Fence & Wall Cover

Tangerine Beauty is the go-to vine for covering block walls, chain-link fences, and wooden fences in the Phoenix Valley. Its clinging tendrils attach directly to surfaces without damaging masonry. A single plant can cover a 10–15 foot section of wall within 2–3 years. For a 40 ft fence, plant 3–4 vines spaced 10–12 feet apart.

Arbor, Trellis & Pergola

Train Tangerine Beauty over arbors, pergolas, or trellises for a stunning overhead canopy of orange flowers. The vine provides dappled shade in summer while allowing winter light through. Pair with a sturdy metal or wood structure rated for the vine’s mature weight.

Privacy Screening

When grown on a trellis or fence, Tangerine Beauty’s dense foliage creates an effective living privacy screen. Its semi-evergreen habit means it holds foliage through most Phoenix winters, providing year-round coverage in all but the coldest snaps.

Best Time to Plant Tangerine Beauty Cross Vine in Phoenix

Fall (October–November) is the ideal planting window. Warm soil encourages fast root establishment while cooler air reduces transplant stress. Your vine gets 6–8 months to build a strong root system before its first Phoenix summer. Spring (February–April) is a solid second choice. Avoid summer planting when possible.

How to Plant Tangerine Beauty Cross Vine

  1. Dig wide, not deep — 2–3x the root ball width, same depth
  2. Check for caliche — break through any hardpan layer for drainage
  3. Backfill with native soil — a light 20% compost blend is fine
  4. Plant 12–18 inches from the base of the wall or trellis
  5. Water basin — build a 3–4 inch ring to direct water to roots
  6. Mulch — 2–3 inches of bark or gravel mulch to retain moisture

Watering Tangerine Beauty Cross Vine in Phoenix

First Year Watering Schedule

  • Weeks 1–2: Every 1–2 days, deep and slow (20–30 min)
  • Month 1–2: Every 3–4 days
  • Month 3–6: Every 7–10 days (every 5–7 days in peak summer)
  • After Year 1: Every 10–14 days summer; every 3–4 weeks winter

Drip Irrigation

Use 1–2 GPH emitters placed 18–24 inches from the base. Established vines are drought-tolerant but bloom more heavily with consistent summer irrigation. Add a second emitter as the vine matures and the root zone expands.

How fast does Tangerine Beauty Cross Vine grow in Phoenix?
Very fast — expect 3–6 feet of new growth per year in Phoenix. Most vines reach 15–20 feet within 3–4 years and begin blooming heavily in their second season.

Is Tangerine Beauty Cross Vine drought tolerant?
Yes. Once established, it handles Phoenix heat and dry conditions well. Regular deep watering during bloom season produces the heaviest flower displays.

Does Tangerine Beauty Cross Vine damage walls?
The vine attaches with small disc-like tendrils that don’t penetrate masonry. It’s safe for block walls and stucco. Avoid growing directly on wood siding, as trapped moisture can cause issues over time.

Does it attract hummingbirds?
Absolutely. The tubular orange flowers are a magnet for hummingbirds throughout the bloom season. It’s one of the best hummingbird plants for Phoenix landscapes.

How Many Tangerine Beauty Cross Vine Do I Need?

A single self-clinging vine covers roughly a 10 to 15 foot section of wall at maturity, so space plants about 11 feet on center for a continuous run. Measure your wall or fence and divide by 11.

Wall / Fence Run Plants Needed (11 ft spacing)
12 linear feet 1 to 2 plants
24 linear feet 2 to 3 plants
36 linear feet 3 plants
48 linear feet 4 to 5 plants

For one arbor, pergola, or trellis panel, a single vine fills the structure on its own within a few seasons.

Tangerine Beauty Cross Vine Season-by-Season in Phoenix

  • Spring (Feb to Apr): The biggest flush of tangerine-orange trumpets opens and hummingbirds arrive. New growth climbs fast. A strong second planting window.
  • Summer (May to Sep): Continues blooming through the heat and takes reflected warmth from walls in stride. Monsoon rains push fresh growth. Deep watering during bloom keeps the color coming.
  • Fall (Oct to Nov): A second wave of bloom and the prime planting window, giving roots months to establish before next summer.
  • Winter (Dec to Jan): Semi-evergreen, holding most of its leaves through mild Valley winters for year-round screening. Genuinely cold-hardy well below freezing, so no frost protection is needed here, though it may thin in the coldest snaps.

Plant It With

  • Queen's Wreath 'Pink': pink cascading blooms that complement the vine's tangerine-orange.
  • Coral Honeysuckle: another hummingbird-favorite tubular bloomer to extend the show on an adjacent panel.
  • Red Yucca: coral flower spikes at the base keep hummingbirds fed and add spineless structure.
  • Texas Sage: a drought-tolerant evergreen shrub that anchors the bed beneath the vine.

Is Tangerine Beauty Cross Vine Right for Your Yard?

Tangerine Beauty is an excellent fit for a full-sun block wall, fence, arbor, or trellis where you want fast, long-season orange color, hummingbirds, and semi-evergreen screening. Its disc-like tendrils cling to masonry and stucco without damage and it tolerates caliche as long as the hole drains. It is not a fit for a tight, small-space spot, since it is vigorous and can climb 20 to 50 feet, and avoid running it directly on wood siding where trapped moisture can cause problems.

Small
A little small but my dog loved them. Does not hold up to a shredder though. Perfect for typical toy lovers

None of the stuffing pulled out
I have 3 dogs. 1 is very gentle w/ stuffed toys. 1 is new to us and very anxious and kept stealing things like water bottles to gnaw on. And 1 destroys every stuffed toy we have ever brought into the house. We bought these for the anxious one. She was recently adopted and very people shy and afraid of the world around her. She doesn't know how to play with people and she's terrified if you try to throw a ball or if you squeak a squeaker, but we also needed something durable enough for her chewing that would be safe for her and could also withstand the toy destroyer possibly getting hold of it. They've been playing with these for a few months now and the most damage is that some of the rope necks are a bit frayed and a lot of the fuzz on the outside is gone, but none of them have been torn open. And the squeakers are in there in a way that it's hard to make them squeak if not doing so intentionally. The 1 dog can have plush toys again, the 1 dog can gnaw and chew to reduce her anxiety and the 3rd can chew and attack it without me having to clean up stuffing all the time

Very durable
Color: 3 Pack Donkey Giraffe Dog
For some reason I thought they would be a little bigger but I have to say they are very durable. My Saint Bernard has not shredded them to pieces yet. Normally the toys last a day or two but he still has them after 3 weeks. 👍
