These funky houseplants truly look out-of-this-world. Like a cross between a  cabbage and a pineapple, this rare tropical houseplant will add an extra dimension to your sideboard arrangements. Its trunk grows wide, and its broad, pale green leaves sprout from the top, wide and long and lush. Looking like a miniature tree, this plant is an ideal way to bring the tropical into your home. Despite its rarity (both as a houseplant, grown in nurseries, and in its native Hawaii, where it is endangered), it is easygoing as a houseplant - just make sure it gets bright light and doesn't suffer too much in winter cold.

Scientific Name
Brighamia insignis (Brigham's plant, distinguished species)

Synonyms
Brighamia citrina

This plant's scientific name was first published in 1867 by botanist Asa Gray.

Common Name(s)
Cabbage on a Stick, Vulcan Palm, Hawaiian Palm, Hawaiian Vulcan Palm, Lettuce on a Stick

Origin
This plant is endemic to Hawaii, (North America / Pacific Ocean, tropical climate)

Light
This plant will do best with mostly bright, indirect light with an hour or so of morning or evening sun. In an east- or west-facing window, this plant will get a bit of weaker sunlight to boost its photosynthesising, without it being enough to burn its leaves.

Water
These palms are, in fact, succulents, so they like their soil to dry out totally between waters. They store water in their stem, or caudex, so are quite happy to sit with dry soil for a while. When the pot feels light to pick up, it's probably time for a water. Watering with lukewarm water will also help reduce stress.

Humidity
This plant is a big fan of high humidity; regular misting of the leaves or the introduction of a humidity tray will stop its leaves turning brown and crispy. A bathroom or kitchen with consistent humidity can also be a good spot for this plant.

Soil
Plant in a well-draining soil mix, such as a cactus or succulent blend, with added sand or grit. Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent waterlogging.

Food
Feed every four waters during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser. Reduce feeding to every six waters in autumn and winter when the plant's growth slows.

Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 20-27°C. Protect from cold drafts and avoid exposure to temperatures below 15°C. This plant is sensitive to low temperatures.

Pet-safe
Yes, this plant is non-toxic to pets and humans, making it a safe choice for family homes.

Sprouts Top Tips
To encourage healthy growth, rotate the plant occasionally to ensure even light exposure. Keep an eye on the leaves; drooping can be a sign of overwatering or poor drainage, if the soil is being left moist.

Extras
In its native habitat, Brighamia insignis relies on moths for pollination. Indoors, it rarely flowers, but in the right conditions, it may produce yellow, bell-shaped flowers at the top of its trunk.

Did You Know?
The Hawaiian Palm is critically endangered, with only a handful of specimens left in the wild. Conservationists have had to hand-pollinate plants to preserve the species.

More of the same
Format: Kindle
I haven’t read X-Men comics in years, but decided to dive back in as a supplement to all the Marvel Cinematic buzz. The plot seems like standard X-Men fare. The weakness of the comic medium, particularly for characters like the X-Men, is the holding pattern of the status quo that the characters are constantly suck in. I’m not sure if this series will deliver a clever twist on it yet. The dynamic they are setting up with the downtrodden Sentinel manufacturing town is interesting, as is the implicit aspiration of the X-Men to replenish the land itself. I am enjoying the team composition and the gorgeous art. They decided to crucify Wolverine again and it looked cool as ever. Juggernaut’s costume, too, is incredibly drawn.

Great new beginning
Format: Kindle
This story hits all the right notes for a 1st issue, with new mysteries and new characters. Love the team, with stalwarts like Beast, Wolverine, and Cyclops. Looking forward to more!

Krakoa is gone, but a new era begins!
Format: Kindle
I was pleased to see this was not a reboot but a continuation in the aftermath of the Fall of the House of X. MacKay certainly started off this new run on the right foot, ending with intrigue and introducing potentially new big bads. Excited to throw my money at Marvel in the months to come.

FROM THE ASHES… ?
Format: Kindle
As a longtime comics enthusiast and certainly a faithful fan of Marvel’s mightiest man, there’s something left to be desired of the 70s into 80s era of X-MEN that marked its genius. Chris Claremont is legendary in his scope and his indelible style that helps make the X-Men something of flesh and bone that jumped off the page. Unfortunately that hasn’t been properly passed, and the torch hasn’t landed in the hands of creatives who can really capture that spirit. It’s hard to recognize any of these characters, or connect with their situation. This group of X-Men and their mission (whatever it is) are uninteresting, uninspired and lacking any authenticity. Interestingly written, the art has some textured, but the story isn’t engaging. I really wanted to like and support this “all-new, all-different” direction, but I can’t. This is not for me.

Revenge for a fallen emperor, redemption for a fallen warrior
Format: Kindle
The crimson empire saga is the story of kir kanos, last of emperor Palpatine's crimson clad imperial guardsmen. It is a story of revenge and redemption, as over the course of the trilogy Kanos grows and changes in ways he'd never have expected. I did especially like his changing relationship with Mirith Sinn, and how her arc is a fitting mirror to his own. I also liked the villain of the first series. Jax, and I wish he had stuck around for the rest of the trilogy. The rest of the villains throughout the trilogy are far less memorable than jax, but I suppose that's the problem when you make sequel to whats unseemly a self contained story. Of the three series contained here, the first series is by far the best. It's quite self contained, and any knowledge of the universe at the time is explained quite well. It's also the simplest, Kanos wants Jax dead, and Jax wants Kanos dead. The second series is abit of a mess, with an overly complicated plot and a good deal of unseemly wasted page count on the random side characters that don't advance anything. In particular I'm thinking of the hutt character, as well as the mystery hooded figure who doesn't actually come into play at any point in the saga. Perhaps he comes into play in some later star wars story, but in this it reeks of a dropped plot line. The third and final series is a worthy sequel to the first although the scenes with Han solo also seem unnecessary. I did like the ending of the saga, even though I would have referred a bit of a more definitive ending in terms of certain character relationships. The art of the saga get progressively better with each series. In the first series it's still reasonable good, but some of the faces and body proportions are bit weak. By the third it's really good if standard comic art. The fight scenes are well done throughout, and the ship battles are a great to see. In conclusion, I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good revenge story. Don't worry about the context of this in the greater star wars saga, the most pertinent information is explained well enough, in my opinion. As long you have seen the star wars movies and remember who the emperor is, your good.
