About Eastern Redcedar
Eastern Redcedar, Juniperus virginiana, isn’t really a cedar at all, but a small- to medium-sized juniper tree native to eastern North America, from southeastern Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. Other common names include Eastern Juniper, Red Juniper, and Aromatic Cedar. An especially common species in the Great Plains region of the United States, Eastern Redcedar is often found growing alongside roadways and fences, and scattered across open fields.
Growing to heights between 20 – 70 feet, with trunk diameters reaching 1 – 3 feet across, this is typically an upright, symmetrical, and neatly conical evergreen tree — in the Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas Ozarks, Eastern Redcedar is even used as a Christmas Tree species. Foliage appears in two distinctive forms: new growth is needle-like and spiky, while older, scale-like leaves press tightly against the twig. Cones, which can grow up to 0.25 inches-long, closely resemble berry-like fruit: globose, small, and dark purple-blue with a waxy sheen. They are a favorite of the Cedar Waxwing, and support a host of other wildlife, including wild turkeys, bears, rabbits, foxes, coyotes, and deer. Bark is reddish-brown and fibrous, exfoliating in narrow strips.
The wood of Eastern Redcedar has traditionally been used in fence building for its rot resistance, and in the construction of chests and closets for its fragrance and moth-repellant qualities. Native Americans once used the wood to mark out hunting territories. The city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana (which literally means “red stick”), was so-named by the French for these red-colored marker-poles.
A particularly hardy pioneer species, Eastern Redcedar thrives under adverse conditions — both drought tolerant and cold tolerant, growing equally well in dry, acidic, rocky, sandy, and clay substrates — so much so that during the Dust Bowl drought of the 1930s, the Prairie States Forest Project encouraged farmers to plant wind breaks made of Eastern Redcedar.

Good, inexpensive filter for Euro cars
Size: Pack of 1
I use these on my BMW, Mercedes, and Volvo cars ('02 and a '99, don't get any ideas) and they work great. Much nicer than the cheap STP / Fram crap at AutoZone or O'Reilly, and not that much more expensive.
The Merc and Volvo share the same filter model, and these come with 2 different sets of o-rings and washers in little baggies labeled "Mercedes" and "Volvo" which I thought was pretty cool.

Nice Filter Wrench for my Volvo V70XC!
Size: 86mm x 16
I was needing a filter wrench for my 2001 Volvo V70XC and couldn't find anything that fit from the local auto parts stores. Not knowing what to expect, I took a chance on this one since most of the reviews were 5 star and the price was exceptional.
When I received it, I was quite pleased with the construction and finish. I have a brand new oil filter housing for my Volvo (since the one currently on my car is chewed up from the former owner using slip-jaw pliers or something on it) and the fit is perfect! I have worked as a mechanic my whole life (aircraft & automotive), and spent a couple of years as a technician at an automotive dealership and I can say that the tool looks like it is designed for heavy-duty use.
The stamped steel housing is thicker than those found in local auto parts stores and the drive adapter has a thick arc welded bead along the inside of the tool. So, it appears to be made to hold up to some fairly heavy torque. Although the product description states that it is 1/2", the drive adapter is actually made for direct attachment to a 3/8" drive. Perhaps this error stems from the fact that they offer a much larger wrench (118-131mm) and this is a more accurate description of their other offerings.
The 3/8" drive adapter works perfectly and a 21mm socket fits nicely on the external hex. Fits with SAE sizes are a mixed bag, though. I was able to attach a 13/16" 12-pt. box-end wrench, but not the opposing open-end. A similarly sized 13/16" 6-pt. socket was extremely tight, so I wouldn't recommend this size and would just go with the 21mm if you had to use the external hex. Otherwise, just use the 3/8" drive adapter for easiest use of this tool. The adapter also incorporates ball detents on all four sides of the internal 3/8" drive, so your ratchet or extension won't easily fall off while in use.
Since this tool is made for oil filter removal & installation, I'm sure that it will deliver as promised. I'll post an update after my next oil change and I get a chance to use it and install the new filter housing I have.
