What Is Lice Nix Essential Oil Blend?

Lice Nix is a multi-botanical aromatherapy blend formulated for the elimination and prevention of head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) infestations. The blend layers tea tree, oregano, lavender, and supporting carrier oils to disrupt the lice life cycle — killing adult lice within 1 to 2 hours of contact and weakening nits over the 7 to 10 day reapplication protocol.

Each 10 mL amber dropper bottle is enough for 2 to 4 full hair treatments depending on hair length.

The product is designed for whole-family use during outbreaks and for repeat preventive use during school lice seasons. Pre-diluted in a hair-friendly carrier base, it can be applied directly to scalp and hair without further mixing. Always combine essential oil treatment with mechanical nit-comb removal — the 2 approaches together produce 90%-plus clearance rates.

Lice Nix Benefits: Clinical Evidence Summary

Benefit Area Key Finding Typical Use
Adult lice elimination Tea tree at 1% in 2010 trial killed 100% of lice within 30 minutes of contact Saturate hair, leave 30 to 60 min
Nit weakening Repeat applications every 7 days for 2 cycles disrupt egg viability Reapply day 1, day 7, day 14
Resistance prevention Multi-pathway essential oils less prone to lice resistance than permethrin First-line option for resistant strains
Scalp soothing Lavender component reduces scratching and secondary irritation Built into formula
Family prevention Weekly preventive application during outbreak periods 2 to 3 drops per shampoo wash
Comb-out aid Slick oil base helps fine-tooth comb glide through hair Apply before nit combing
Anti-microbial Reduces secondary scalp infection from scratch wounds Daily during active infestation
Recurrence reduction Continued weekly use post-clearance reduces 30 to 60 day reinfestation rate 1 weekly maintenance wash
  • 4-oil layered antiparasitic formula targets adult lice, weakens nits, and soothes irritated scalp
  • Tea tree at 1% killed 100% of adult lice within 30 minutes in 2010 controlled trial
  • Pairs with pure tea tree essential oil for spot scalp work
  • 3-cycle protocol (day 1, 7, 14) is required to break the 7 to 10 day lice life cycle
  • Less prone to resistance than permethrin shampoos which face 50 to 80% resistance in some regions
  • Prevention dose: 2 to 3 drops in regular shampoo weekly during school outbreak seasons
  • 10 mL bottle covers 2 to 4 full treatments depending on hair length

How Lice Nix Works

The blend acts on 3 mechanisms simultaneously. The first is suffocation: the carrier oil base coats the lice exoskeleton and blocks spiracles (breathing pores), killing adult lice within 30 to 60 minutes of contact. The second is neurotoxicity: tea tree's terpinen-4-ol and oregano's carvacrol disrupt insect acetylcholinesterase, the same target as pyrethroid pesticides but through plant chemistry that lice have not developed resistance to.

The third is enzymatic disruption of nit (egg) viability: repeated application weakens the chitin layer of attached nits, reducing hatch success on the second and third treatment cycles. The 7 to 10 day life cycle of head lice means single treatment cannot eliminate them — nits hatching after one application restart the cycle. Three applications spaced 7 days apart catches every life stage.

Lice Nix Treatment Protocol

The standard 3-cycle protocol:

  • Day 1: Apply 8 to 15 drops Lice Nix to dry scalp and hair, working from roots to tips. Cover with shower cap and leave 60 minutes minimum (90 minutes is better). Wash out with regular shampoo. Comb through wet hair with a fine-tooth nit comb section by section, wiping the comb on a paper towel between strokes.
  • Day 7: Repeat the full process. This catches lice that hatched from nits that survived the day-1 treatment.
  • Day 14: Repeat one more time as insurance. By now, most cases are clear; the third pass catches residual eggs.

Follow-up: continue daily nit-combing with damp hair for 7 days after the third treatment. Wash all bedding, hats, and brushes in 130 F water or seal in plastic bag for 2 weeks (lice die off in 24 to 48 hours without a host). For preventive use during outbreak seasons, add 2 to 3 drops to weekly shampoo.

Lice Nix vs. OTC and Prescription Options

Option Mechanism Resistance Best For
Lice Nix (this blend) Multi-pathway suffocation + neurotoxic + enzyme disruption Very low Resistant strains, multi-family outbreak
Permethrin 1% (Nix) Single-pathway pyrethroid 50 to 80% in some regions First-line if non-resistant area
Pyrethrin (RID) Single-pathway natural pyrethroid 30 to 60% Limited if resistance exists
Spinosad (Natroba) Prescription neurotoxic Low so far Persistent resistant cases
Ivermectin (Sklice) Prescription topical Low MD-prescribed for repeat failures

Selection rule: try essential-oil blend first for resistance regions or when you prefer plant-based options. For aggressive school-wide outbreaks with confirmed resistance, prescription spinosad or ivermectin may clear faster. Always combine ANY treatment with thorough nit combing.

Lice Nix Application Schedule

Step When Dose Time
1. First treatment Day 1 8 to 15 drops, full scalp coverage 60 to 90 min under shower cap
2. Comb-out Immediately after wash Use fine nit comb on wet hair 20 to 40 min depending on hair length
3. Second treatment Day 7 Same as day 1 60 to 90 min
4. Third treatment Day 14 Same as day 1 60 to 90 min
5. Daily nit combing Days 1 to 21 Damp hair only 10 to 15 min daily
6. Maintenance Weekly during outbreak season 2 to 3 drops in shampoo Regular wash time

The 3-treatment cycle catches every life stage of head lice. Skipping the day-7 or day-14 treatment is the most common cause of reinfestation.

Safety, Side Effects, and Contraindications

Avoid in young children and during pregnancy. Lice Nix contains tea tree and oregano, both of which are NOT recommended for children under 6 or during pregnancy. For these populations, mechanical nit-combing with conditioner, dimethicone-based products, or pediatrician-supervised options are the standard alternatives.

Consideration Details
Children under 6 Not recommended; use conditioner-comb method or pediatrician-prescribed dimethicone product
Pregnancy and breastfeeding Avoid; oregano and tea tree have insufficient safety data
Eye contact Tilt head back during application; flush with water immediately if oil reaches eyes
Patch test Apply 1 drop to inner forearm 24 hours before scalp use; about 5 to 10% of users mild reaction
Open scalp wounds Avoid until healed; use only on intact skin
Pets Do NOT use on pets; tea tree is toxic to cats and small dogs
Hair color/treatment Oil base may slightly fade fresh color treatments; treat lice first, then dye
Asthma Strong aroma may trigger; use in well-ventilated room

Lice Nix FAQ

How fast does Lice Nix kill lice? +

Adult lice die within 30 to 60 minutes of contact through suffocation and neurotoxic action. Tea tree at 1% killed 100% of lice within 30 minutes in a 2010 controlled trial. Nits (eggs) require repeat treatments because they hatch on a 7 to 10 day cycle.

Why do I need 3 treatments? +

Head lice eggs hatch over 7 to 10 days. A single treatment kills only adults and weakens nits but doesn't fully prevent hatching. The day 1 treatment kills adults; day 7 catches newly hatched nymphs; day 14 catches any final stragglers. Skipping cycles 2 or 3 is the leading cause of reinfestation.

Can I use Lice Nix on my child's hair? +

For children 6 and older, yes, with parental supervision and a 24-hour patch test first. For children under 6, NOT recommended due to tea tree and oregano components. For young children, use conditioner-comb method, dimethicone-based products, or speak with a pediatrician about safe options like permethrin alternatives.

Is Lice Nix better than permethrin (Nix)? +

Often, in resistance regions. Some 50 to 80% of US head lice populations show permethrin resistance. Lice Nix uses 4 botanical pathways less prone to resistance. For a region without resistance issues, permethrin works faster (1 hour vs. 60 to 90 min). Combining with thorough nit combing matters more than which product you choose.

Do I need to wash bedding and clothing? +

Yes. Wash all bedding, towels, hats, scarves, and brushes used in the past 2 days in hot water (130 F+) and high-heat dry. For non-washable items, seal in plastic bag for 14 days — lice die within 24 to 48 hours without a host. Vacuum mattresses, car seats, and upholstered chairs the family used.

Can I use Lice Nix preventively? +

Yes. During outbreak seasons (typically August to November in school regions), add 2 to 3 drops to a normal shampoo wash 1 to 2 times per week. The aroma deters lice from settling. Many families with school-aged kids use this protocol routinely to reduce repeat infestations during peak season.

How long should I leave Lice Nix on the scalp? +

Minimum 60 minutes; 90 minutes is better. Cover hair with a shower cap to keep oils in contact with lice. Do NOT exceed 2 hours — some users report scalp irritation past that point. Adult lice need 30 to 60 minutes of full contact to suffocate.

Will Lice Nix damage my hair? +

No. The carrier base actually conditions hair somewhat. Some users with very fine or oily hair may need 2 shampoo washes after treatment to fully clear the oil. The 4-oil blend itself is not damaging at the dilution level used. Color-treated hair may experience minor fading; treat lice first then dye if needed.

Does Lice Nix work on body lice or pubic lice? +

Lice Nix is formulated for head lice. For body lice or pubic lice (crab lice), the same essential oils may help, but the standard treatment protocol is different and may require permethrin or pyrethrin products. Consult a healthcare provider for body or pubic lice infestations.

Can the rest of my family use it preventively? +

Yes. When 1 family member has lice, treat all close contacts on day 1 even if they show no symptoms — the 7 to 10 day egg incubation means symptoms can lag the actual exposure. Use 2 to 3 drops in shampoo for asymptomatic family members; full treatment for any with visible signs.

Will Lice Nix smell strong? +

Yes — tea tree and oregano dominate the aroma during application. The smell fades to a faint herbal note within 4 to 6 hours after wash-out. Most users find it tolerable for the 60 to 90 minute treatment window. Children may complain; reassure them this is the same kind of smell as in many natural cleaning products.

What if my scalp itches after treatment? +

Mild itch within 1 to 2 days post-treatment is often residual healing from louse bites, not a reaction to the oil. Apply lavender essential oil at 1% dilution to soothe. If itch is severe or with rash, this may be a reaction to the oregano component — discontinue and consult a dermatologist.

What makes Remedy's Lice Nix different? +

4-botanical layered formula in pre-diluted hair-safe carrier base, no synthetic insecticides like permethrin or lindane, lab-tested per batch in USA cGMP facility, packaged in 10 mL amber dropper. Vegan and cruelty-free. Oil base also assists nit-comb glide, reducing pulling and breakage during the comb-out step.

Protected Our Skin and Smells Good
Size: 6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I love this stuff! My husband and I bought it as a last minute grab for our honeymoon and it was well worth it! I'm very sensitive to the sun AND to sunscreens, so I needed something with simple ingredients that would also protect my skin without breaking me out. This not only kept away the burning rash I get from the sun, but protected my husband and I from any sunburn at all. It worked not only in dry conditions, but it stayed on for hours after we swam in the ocean. We also liked the fact that it smelled herbal, almost like pizza/Italian seasoning. That didn't bother us because we both hate the smell of most sunscreens. If you have sensitive skin or are looking for a more natural product, I highly recommend this!

Great reef-safe, easy-to-apply sunscreen (comparison of three ThinkSport products)
Size: 6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I will start by saying that I am used to traditional non-mineral sunscreens and tend to only buy physical/mineral-based sunscreens when I'm going to be in a tropical ocean and need something reef-safe, though more and more kids sunscreens are shifting to mineral-based. After quite a bit of research I settled on ThinkSport for my family's recent trip to Hawaii, and I'm very pleased with it. I brought and used three types of Thinksport sunscreen: Thinksport Kids lotion (yellow/orange and teal squeeze bottle), Thinksport adult lotion (Black, white, and orange squeeze bottle), and Thinksport adult spray (black, white and orange spray bottle). All protected us from sunburn and rubbed in to be invisible as long as skin was dry and free of visible hair (visible whiteness persisted around my husbands facial stubble and chest hair). The only difference between the kids lotion versus the adult lotion is scent--the kids version has a fruitier, more tropical but not-too-strong scent (possibly coconut and something else? it was hard to identify) that I found unobjectionable (though one if my kids wasn't a fan), and the adult lotion had a lighter, less sweet, more citrus-y scent (my son though maybe lime and mint, but I'm not sure that's accurate) that I LOVE. The adult spray had no discernible scent, so I suspect the kids spray might be fairly unscented as well. The easiest to apply by far was the spray--it sprays on white, but feels very light, rubs in easily, and becomes invisible quickly. I was a little worried about whether it could possibly be effective given how light and thin it felt, but it was! The lotions weren't thick for a lotion (but much thicker than the spray) and went on easily, but took more rubbing in to disappear than the spray (this is consistent with my experience with lotion vs spray in traditional sunscreens as well). Invisibility was harder to get after a second or third application or when skin was damp, but all-in-all I found all three Thinksport products to be superior to other mineral-based sunscreens I have tried in the past. In the future I'll probably buy the adult thinksport spray for my kids and husband (who all much prefer a spray-on sunscreen) and the adult thinksport lotion for myself (because I love the scent and don't mind rubbing it in).

Dependable sun protection for active days outdoors
Size: 6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I like how this sunscreen provides reliable broad-spectrum protection and holds up well during outdoor activities. The zinc oxide formula gives me peace of mind, and I appreciate that it's water resistant and reef-safe. It applies smoothly for a mineral sunscreen and stays on effectively during sports, swimming, and long days in the sun. Overall, it's a trustworthy option for anyone looking for strong sun protection.

Clean product
Size: 3 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I only gave it 4 stars because of the smell. Of course it’s sunscreen so it’s going to have a chemical smell but this smell is just too strong for me. Other then that, it’s a great sunscreen. Does take some more rubbing in and be carful to rub it in really good or you’ll have white streaks all over your face. Leaves a bit of a white cast. You don’t need much.

Great quality
Size: 6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
Thinksport SPF 50+ Mineral Sunscreen with Zinc is a reliable, high‑protection option that feels lightweight and non‑greasy on the skin. It applies smoothly without leaving too much white cast for everyday use, and I love that it’s mineral‑based with zinc for strong UVA/UVB defense. Great for active days outdoors. Highly recommend for sensitive skin and safe sun coverage!
